(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

We inherited MILs cat. Who, it turns out, also had lunch and coffee. She's the most timid, tiny cat but when you sit down for lunch she appears out of nowhere and jumps up and starts knocking stuff off the plate - ham, cheese and crisps are her favourite, she loves brie and cheddar but won't touch red leicester. She loves the smell of coffee but won't drink it - she just sniffs and drools into the cup. She also comes running if you tear newspaper, or scrunch foil - we can only assume MIL would do that to make toys for her.

I had no idea of any of this before MIL died as when we visited she'd just fuck off into the garden away from the kids. (The cat not MIL)

I was visiting my DD in the summer.
Outside her house is a bus stop. I was in the garden having a cigarette and looked over to the stop.
A couple were there with a really stocky puppy.
Woman asked the man if he had the dog's drink as it looked thirsty
The man pulled out a pre diluted bottle of vimto and poured it into pups mouth

My cat loves ham too, but it has to be the really thin slices of shit value ham; proper thick, good ham she turns her nose up at!

haha! We mainly only had cheap thin sliced ham anyway as 3 hungry teenagers and a cat got through a lot….

My nutty spaniel loves cheese on toast with a splash of Lea & perrin's. He will literally run around in circles if I am making it.

Also homemade Yorkshire puds and goes mad for a buttered bagel.

Newcastle last Sunday a family walked into mcdDonald's with a rabbit on a lead. Security man on the door didn't bat an eye.

I had a guinea pig that free ranged the downstairs. He would drink out my mug given half a chance. So I used to give him a bit off a saucer. Lived to a ripe old age too.

i miss him, he was a real character

I'm sure I saw a couple walking an actual wolf (or maybe 2, I can't remember) in Portsmouth a couple of months ago. If anyone here is from Pompey, maybe they can confirm if that is possibly true.

Cherrysoup · 22/11/2023 14:20

Why doesn't he just have a biscuit in his pocket? Weird.

My dog loves apple! I had no idea it was toxic and he's shown no signs of ill effects so far. I feel terrible now. What else is toxic bar grapes etc and chocolate?!

Apples aren't toxic to dogs- but the pips are. Remove the pips . I googled as my dog loves the occasional apple, too.

Likely a tamaskan 'wolfdog', utonagan or czechoslovakian wolfdog if they were lanky, if they were big chonky beefcakes then more likely an agouti colour Alaskan Malamute, if average medium size like a lab/collie then probably an agouti Siberian husky.

All the above can have Wolfy looks but you can't own a dog with wolf parents or grandparents in the UK, only great great grandparent (F3), there probably are some but they would come under the dangerous animals act and need to be kept in proper enclosures, they wouldn't be out for a walk on the beach

Mochudubh · 22/11/2023 16:17

Thanks @Anononony

As I remember they were quite leggy so probably one of the first 3 you mention. They were very "wolfy", pretty sure they weren't Husky or Malamute.

I have seen wolves IRL but only in captivity at the Highland Wildlife Park and Edinburgh Zoo.

Apple isn’t bad for them but the seeds are toxic so that’s why giving them the apple core isn’t a great idea. So as long as you take the seeds out you needn’t deprive your dog from a treat they love!

Maddy70 · 22/11/2023 16:51

My dh makes my dog a cuppa each in the morning ...he brings it to bed with mine .... we all drink it while I'm bed. The dog won't get uo until he's had his brew ;)

Comtesse · 22/11/2023 16:57

I saw a lady on the tube get out a tupperware box of cucumber sticks that she then proceeded to feed to her dog.

Blimey that was a weird one.

Comtesse · 22/11/2023 17:05

Oh yes and I saw a bloke on the Brompton Road who had 2 massive blue parrots sat one on each shoulder as he strolled along. That was quite a sight!

soberfabulous · 22/11/2023 17:30

I had a cat with a massive sweet tooth; loved cherry bakewells and any sort of cake. I found this out by accident when I left these items unattended and came back to piles of wet crumbs!

I know nowadays we all know about chocolate being dangerous for dogs but a local lady used to walk home with her collie after getting her paper every day and he’d have a bar of cadburys in his mouth. She said he had to get it as his treat. He lived to be in his twenties!!

Not too long ago it was hard to get real chocolate unless you went to a specialist deli. Newsagent chocolate is mostly just sugar, milk and fat dyed brown with minimum cocoa solids.

ComeOnThenFanny · 22/11/2023 18:04

My two borderjacks love fruit and veg, obvs they don't get grapes, but most other things are fair game. They love lettuce and broccoli, and they almost always have banana and natural yogurt on top of their dog food for breakfast. And quite often scrambled eggs on top of their dinner. They eat better than we do!

ComeOnThenFanny · 22/11/2023 18:05

And I buy them Twiglets for treats 🙈

We were once out walking and met a bloke with a rabbit on a lead. I thought I'd seen it all, but no... he had a cockatoo on one shoulder and a parrot on the other.

Is this in Merseyside? I've heard about this guy and just presumed he was an urban myth!

We had a dog when I was about 12. My mum used to make him a fried egg every morning

noooooooo · 22/11/2023 19:19

Our old dog used to sook Frubes. I did not know a dog could do those sort of lips.

Years ago dogs just used to get leftovers to eat, didn't they? I mean, they didn't have their own special food.

Apparently so, my nana used to fry up all the excess fat from meat, chicken skins or bacon rind, and use them for treats for her ridiculously chunky little dog as well as portioning a small amount of the evening meal for Doggo's dinner. Her thing was, "well you'd get bored eating the same thing each day".
When grandpa passed away my nana continued to make sausage rolls for the dog on a Friday because she didn't think it was fair Ddog missed out just because grandpa wasn't there to eat the sausage rolls. Actually, she got bollocked by the vet for that 🤦‍♀️😂

A man in my town used to walk his ferrets around town on harness leads which used to amuse people.
2 things I’ve seen that were really disturbing though was a Dalmatian dog with clothes buttons sewn onto its ears and on a separate occasion a child who was walking around with a dog collar around his neck with his parents holding the lead. People questioned them about it and they said he likes to copy their dog and the boy was smiling from ear to ear.

Ebananascroogey · 22/11/2023 20:05

Our current dogs absolutely love primula cheese squeezed straight from the tube onto their ready & waiting extended tongues.
Best ever though was a rabbit we used to have. He found out he liked mini cheddars after finding a rogue one dropped on the floor. After that he would do literally anything for one, including overcoming his total aversion to being off the floor to jump on the worktop/table/anywhere else they might be where he taught himself to open the bag. Quite often we'd hear a bang & a rustle & find him happily munching away somewhere!
