(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Driving through Brockenhurst and seen a horse go into the bank. Customers just walked past him without a second glance.

Lloyds Bank I assume?

we had a cocker spaniel when I was a child. She loved nothing better than a drink of cauliflower cooking water.

BookishBabe · 22/11/2023 07:20

I heard tobacco helped get rid of worms?

But MIL dog steal fag butts out the ashtray. Absolutely loves them.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 22/11/2023 07:33

I know a dog that eats bananas.
My dog rarely eats anything offered to her unless it’s cheese or meat. She won’t touch fruit or biscuits, chocolate or crisps 🤷🏼‍♀️

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 22/11/2023 07:42

My dog loves toast! No matter where he is in the house, even If he is fast asleep upstairs... as soon as we push that lever down on the toaster he knows, and within 5 seconds he's there

Never heard of giving a dog tobacco. That's weird and potentially very bad for them surely?

IHeartGeneHunt · 22/11/2023 07:52

My dog sits and waits for the veg peelings, and at raspberry picking time she'll come with us and pick them off the canes for herself.
Swede or cauliflower are her favourites.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/11/2023 09:04

Absolutely love your anecdote @Irregardless ❤️

My dog loves cheese and is also a big fan of custard. He gets to clean the bowls if we’ve had a pudding with custard. The only vegetables he seems to like are peas.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/11/2023 09:20

As for things I might not have believed had I not seen them: I saw a man riding a Penny Farthing along the Fulham Road. That probably wouldn’t surprise me now but this was in the late 90s. Perhaps he was the very first hipster.

Once in the North Lanes in Brighton, I saw a couple having sex in the doorway of their home in broad daylight on a very busy day.

OhGoOnThenIfYouInsist · 22/11/2023 09:28

My dog won't settle at night until he's had a bedtime buttered digestive with a slice of cheese on the top
If I dare forget I'm met with a stare and 'huffs' until I do it

Once consumed, he goes out for a wee and takes himself off upstairs to bed on his memory foam cot mattress, folded king size duvet and pillow

I was early picking up my very old dog at my mum’s house today. They both looked surprised when I opened the door and found them sitting on the sofa watching a film on Netflix, and eating a cheese sandwich each. My dog’s sandwich was cut up in little cubes and she was hand fed by my mum.

At home my dog does not sit on the sofa and does not each lunch..

@Irregardless Awww, how lovely!

Evaka · 22/11/2023 09:34

Best thread of the year. Can't wait to get home tonight and offer cheesy wotsits to our moggy. He's always v interested in my glass of red...

As a child I had a friend whose mother used to put down saucers of milky tea in a row, for their two dogs, one cat, and a rabbit! And they were all there in a row, lapping it up.

Coming from a much less pet friendly family (well, I was allowed a tortoise) I loved going to that house.

SpanielsMatter · 22/11/2023 09:50

Friend was first in his family to go to uni in 1981, when he left his parents got their first dog, who was very very loved.

Friend returned home from university, remarked to his Mum that what she was cooking smelt nice and was that his tea? Was huffily told ‘ that’s not for you, it’s for the dog!’. Friend sat down to cheap corned beef eighties style salad. While the very loved dog tucked into best steak mince at 97p a pound, in 1982 that was premium mince.

Same friend went to get a drink from the kitchen one night ( again back from uni) stroked the dog who slept by the coal range in the kitchen on a comfortable basket. Dog wouldn’t go back on her bed … followed friend and friend desperately trying not to wake his parents trying to get her to settle back down on her bed …. Finally got the dog in the kitchen and quelled the whining after 40 minutes! He mentioned it to his Mum at breakfast the next day. She was most put out and said
‘ Well did you give her, her KitKat?’ Like it was the most usual thing in the world.
‘ She knows she gets a KitKat before she goes on her bed!’ in the most put out voice that a Mum could ever use on an adult child!
Friend mumbled that it hadn’t occurred to him that the dog got a two finger KitKat before she went to bed!

We know chocolate is poisonous for dogs but this information had not reached my friend’s Mum who loved her dog.

Our first dachshund was a fussy eater, a very skinny sausage as a pup. DMil used to buy him beef and fry it in butter. On one occasion he didn't want it all so she said to FiL " the dog doesn't want it, you can have it" (she'd been hand feeding the dog, it hadn't been in his bowl).

The second one adored tea, broke DH of his habit of leaving half a mugful on the floor or low table. He forgot this might apply to milky coffee left on a stool...caught in the act thanks to the very loud lapping sounds!

If you hadn't seen it, you'd not believe it...

I'm so made up with this thread, who would have thought some fella giving his dog baccy would bring so many class stories? Thanks everyone!

The poster who suggested it wasn't tobacco but treats, I did wonder but it looked like tobacco. From this thread it seems older people have used it sparingly as a wormer, maybe its that? Or maybe the dog enjoys nicotine, if I see him again I'll ask him 😂

Our last dog didn’t care at all for dog biscuits - if given a Bonio she’d just bury it in the garden - or in a DD’s bed! 😂 - but she loved raw carrot, and e.g. cauliflower stalks. Evidently good for her teeth, since even when she was very old, her gnashers were still good.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/11/2023 10:55

Our first cat adored special fried rice from the take away.

Both my dogs have a cup of tea each morning. A cup - on the floor Yorkshire tea and milk.
whilst I have mine. Does them no harm what so ever and without it - they always try to snatch mine if I put it down but I go - this is yours Bee, this one is yours Bertie and this one is your Bramble and they drink them. 😂without them they would get a pout on. They don’t have their own mugs though.

How bad is tea for dogs? You may have considered this if your dog tried to sneak a sip when you brewed yourself an afternoon cup. If humans can drink tea, is it safe for dogs to have some?
The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely drink tea. A lot of teas contain caffeine, which is something all dogs should avoid. Consuming too much caffeine can lead to serious health problems for a dog. Even teas that don’t contain caffeine may also include ingredients that could prove to be toxic to your dog, including various fruits and artificial sweeteners

Gorgeous dog

My old girl rabbit will move like a kitten if she hears the biscuit packet.

I had her steal a BN biscuit off me once and high tail it into her burrow.

Also custard creams.

And bread.

She's a demon for food she shouldn't have.

ManateeFair · 22/11/2023 11:15

All our dogs when I was growing up absolutely loved a cup of tea. We had to warn visitors about leaving their cuppa on the coffee table.

The draft horses at the local brewery when I was a child (I realise this sounds like I was brought up in Victorian times, but it was actually the 1980s) used to get given two pints of bitter each at the end of their shift.

Also had a rabbit when I was a child who went mad for a Farley's rusk.*

*Obviously I would absolutely not recommend feeding your rabbit sugary biscuits for human babies, because it's very bad for them. Pleased to say the rabbit lived to the ripe old age of 12 though.

Where we live Port Salut cheese is an extortionate price ( not in Europe so…) gave DH a plate of cold chicken, salad, Port Salut as a treat. Came into the dining room to find liberal sized chunks being delicately hand fed to our ancient, white muzzled, but grateful Boxer…. DH LOVES cheese but his love for our Boxer outshines even his rotund devotion to food.

She was gracious enough to fold herself contortionist style from her comfortable place on dining room sofa! She didn’t even get down for this sizeable treat of extortionate cheese. It was quite a sight as DH knew he’d been caught red handed.

Still, she’s worth it, and when she is too tired to get off the sofa after a beach walk I often hand feed her and DH pretends to disapprove and tuts. DH now doesn’t have a leg to stand on!

We had a cat who would sit and wait for a saucer of Mums tea I caught her adding sugar to it once she said he liked it sweet!
