(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Any unguarded cup of tea was fair game to my cat, he made your life hell if you made a brew and didn't make one for him.

Unless you're blending up to a fine grit, several hundred grams of pure apple seed and feeding it fresh to the dog, you're really NOT going to give the dog cyanide poisoning. There is no need to remove apple pips from cores to give to dogs folks!

Tobacco however, yep thats pretty poisonous stuff - fresh pipe or rolling tobacco is probably less harmful, used cig butts will be far far worse. Nicotine poisoning is unpleasant but would result in vomiting first.

I used to work on a racing yard where one horse, Arnie, would shove his face in my pockets and nick my ciggies if given half a chance. He would absolutely eat the lot and I learned to leave them in the tack room. I still got frisked each morning when i went in to muck out and groom him though. He had to content himself with nicking my baseball cap and flapping it around as I worked, which then developed into slapping me on the arse with it... fun!

I do find dogs are happier and less fussy on a varied and interesting diet though - this idea that dogs have to eat the same thing, day in, day out or else they will become ill or fussy, is bullshit. Its an invention of the early dog food manufacturing industry - who discovered their product sold MUCH better if dogs were not permitted to eat anything tastier. So Mr Spratt put about in his marketing that letting your dog taste 'human food' would spoil them (a cunning if audacious plan since til then, dogs had indeed lived on human food, left overs and waste and there was no 'dog food') - stick to Spratts Dog Biscuits (made lovingly from abbatoir waste and the waste grain from the brewing and baking industries!)

@Lwrenagain

Is this in Merseyside? I've heard about this guy and just presumed he was an urban myth!

Delamere forest, so not far off, about 20 years ago.
