(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

Driving through Brockenhurst and seen a horse go into the bank. Customers just walked past him without a second glance.

At one school I taught, not rural at all, in the middle of a town, a little girl was brought in every morning on a pony, led by grandma.

DelilahsHaven · 21/11/2023 21:10

I used to see a guy attempting to walk an unfeasibly large rabbit. Usually it had parked its gigantic self and was refusing to co-operate.

My Nanna's dog used to have an icecream from the icecream van. It was a particularly clever dog, and used to take itself off to an auntie's house - on the bus! The bus conductor lived on my Nanna's road and would say when she'd seen him off on an adventure.

Snorting at the poster who's horse took her into the estate agents 🤣🤣🤣

coveredindoghairs · 21/11/2023 21:14

One of our dogs loves fruit and vegetables. She'll happily munch on lettuce, carrot, and celery, but her favorite is tomatoes. She knows the word 'tomato', in fact, so if it comes up during food prep, we have her full attention. Back when we grew cherry tomatoes in the garden, she'd help herself to the ones she could reach. Same with blueberries.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/11/2023 21:18

My cat has just eaten half the tuna pate that I bought for my supper.

Cat before her used to go wild at the odour of coffee - and it wasn't the milk, because I only drink it black.

faeriesandelves · 21/11/2023 21:23

My old grandad used to give his dog a pinch of tobacco as a wormer ! This was back in the 1950s!!

BestIsWest · 21/11/2023 21:28

We have a dog who is obsessed with fruit. Obviously not grapes but he loves apple, pear, banana, blueberries and tangerines (in moderation of course). Our other dog wouldn’t give you a thank you for any of them but loves a bit of broccoli.

I, with the cat with this one!

DollyDaydreamW · 21/11/2023 21:32

My dog loves eating a pinch of used green tea leaves from my teapot. She would kill for a raw broccoli stem. Her favourite thing though, is whatever the local teens throw into the bushes on their walk to school, given half a chance to find it 🤮 Half a dirty sausage roll anyone? A spat-out Maoam?!

doggybootcamp · 21/11/2023 21:40

Just this evening I heard my dog in the kitchen then she wandered back through to sit at my feet. Looked down when I heard her chewing something and she'd taken a banana from the fruit bowl and was methodically peeling the skin off. She wasn't impressed by the stringy bits though!

Irregardless · 21/11/2023 21:45

A friend of mine was really pissed off because she had someone ring her doorbell constantly one night, and when she opened there was noone there. Of course every time her dog barked too. She ended up waiting angrily by the door, and even shouted out This is NOT funny, stop it!! several times but couldn’t see anyone apart from the neighbour across the road looking strangely at her.

She then looked at her doorbell and saw a big slug crawling over it..

I had my elderly grandfather dogsit for us when we went on a short break. Got home 4 days later to find the bag of dog food I’d left completely untouched. Apparently he ‘didn’t like that shit I’d left for him’ and had eaten every meal with my grandfather - tomato soup with bread and butter, bacon sandwiches, faggots and pease pudding and full roast beef Sunday dinner. He also came home with a full bag of Tesco value custard cream biscuits because ‘he really liked those’

The custard creams were given to a local toddler group and our little terrier complete with tomato soup stained snout was back to regular dog food much to his dissatisfaction

I love this . And the poster whose mum dogsits and shares her lunch with it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/11/2023 22:07

One of my previous dogs was very firm on what constituted food - basically meat, crisps, dog biscuits/treats... not a lot else.

However he absolutely could not ABIDE the idea of another dog getting something he wasn't having. Even if he really really HATED that food.

Citrus fruit was absolutely top of his 'not a food' list, tangerine segments were disgusting, he'd leave the room BUT, if one of the others had a bit, he'd have to queue up for his bit...

And then eat it, whilst wrinkling his nose, trying not to let it touch his tongue, screwing his eyes up and making YUK EW YUCK noises as he ate it as quickly as possible!

No one here currently has such strong feelings though the saluki will occasionally re-try fruit shes previously discounted as food, which results in her spitting out lumps of banana on the floor and giving me filthy looks as if I tried to poison her, then giving one of the other two filthy looks when they dare to eat the food she doesn't want. She is a contrary madam! If you don't give her any when shes in a 'I'll try it' mood then you get the sucked in cheeks and huge eyes and 'im STARRRRRRRRVING' face that could launch a thousand RSPCA campaigns of course!

Anononony · 21/11/2023 22:19

My old dog (now passed but lived until 15ish) once got hold of a small amount of hash (we were much younger and pre-kids!). He seemed to be having a lovely time! We very nervously called the vets who asked how much he had consumed and told us to watch for a few potential signs but given he was a decent size dog (pushing 30kg) and it was only a little nugget of it he would be fine!

We gave him extra dinner 😂

More recently, our remaining dog is absolutely disgusted by gerkins! We were getting Macdonald's after a day out and got her a burger, only to find the top of the bun completely untouched because there was a gerkin right in the middle of it. Took the gerkin off and she wolfed the rest of the bun, I've never known a dog to be so particular 😂

Mothership4two · 21/11/2023 22:21

Oh no @Dobbybigearsdog that's annoying. My aunt's dog used to eat (paper) money if she could get it. She went through over £100 in her lifetime

Please elaborate, I'm dying to know what it sounded like 😀

It was crawling over some expanded polystyrene at the time, and there was a very faint rasping sound. I assume it was attempting to eat the polystyrene. You can hear one here:

My tortoise used to like a bit of pork pie.
Some years ago Moors Valley Country Park in Dorset used to have a problem with grey squirrels - they got addicted to nicotine because they used to eat cigarette ends discarded in the picnic area and started to attack people with cigarettes to get their fix. Eventually smoking was banned and picnics became less dangerous!

One of my cats loves blueberry muffins, the other one loves to chew plastic carrier bags.

StHilarion · 21/11/2023 23:00

Many autumns ago we found our greyhound passed out in the garden. Mad rush to the vets and he was put on a drip and kept in overnight. He was pissed. Had eaten so many plums that had fallen to the ground in a next door orchard and they had fermented in his tummy.

CrushingOnRubies · 21/11/2023 23:10

My DGPs boxer used to have a couple of serfs of orange and a saucer of tea as an afternoon snack

Then a jacket potato and dog meat for dinner

CrushingOnRubies · 21/11/2023 23:11

Oh and we had a spaniel and it needs some pills from the vet and the vet suggested putting the pill in a fun size Mars bar so she would eat it Hmm I loved it because it meant there were Mars bars in the house which was a treat

I’m not sure I believe this, tobacco even in small quantities can be fatal to dogs, and if not will cause signficant internal organ damage.

Can being the important word.
My dog was the ultimate thief she stole/ ate onion, garlic, chocolate, raisins and raw potatoes so many times. We didn't know this stuff was bad until we had her for 10 years. She also used to sneak out and eat the bins from the takeaways near us, so fuck knows what that contained! She lived until she was 18, didn't go to the vets apart from jabs until she had a tooth out at 17. Not saying it's good for them and she was lucky but not all dogs react.

I was early picking up my very old dog at my mum’s house today. They both looked surprised when I opened the door and found them sitting on the sofa watching a film on Netflix, and eating a cheese sandwich each. My dog’s sandwich was cut up in little cubes and she was hand fed by my mum.

At home my dog does not sit on the sofa and does not each lunch..

Brilliant - you best start providing lunch (and Netflix)

One of my cats loves blueberry muffins, the other one loves to chew plastic carrier bags.

I said upthread about our old siamese cat that chewed plastic and once ate a carrier bag. How do I know? The bag came out the other end whole. She was seriously freaked out by this enormous rustley thing that didn't 'pass' immediately so she went and found mum who had to pull it out for her. Grim.
