(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

I was in Primark last year and a woman was shopping complete with a cockatiel on each shoulder. I don't know why they didn't fly away!

My dog loves apple! I had no idea it was toxic and he's shown no signs of ill effects so far. I feel terrible now. What else is toxic bar grapes etc and chocolate?!

I think it’s just the seeds that are toxic. I believe they contain arsenic.

daliesque · 21/11/2023 19:20

My dog had her own little plate for her cut up sandwich too, so I am really not convinced this was the first time tbh

Mine prefers ham and cheese, grated of course, with the crusts taken off the bread and the bread spread with real butter.

It's the go to food when the silly old sod is off his usual food for some reason (because he was raised by a cat)

jolaylasofia · 21/11/2023 19:20

our dog loves a piece of toast, ham sandwiches, pate on toast and a bowl of porridge

Ilikeblacklabsandicannotlie · 21/11/2023 19:21

Our lab loves cabbage stalks, carrot ends, fennel and green beans (all raw). There's also a man a couple of villages along who regularly takes his kestral for a walk. It's quite a sight when you first see it!

TheWanderingWoman · 21/11/2023 19:21

@Wehavealaughdontwe Onions, garlic, leeks and bay leaves are toxic to dogs but as far as I'm aware apples are fine for them to have in moderation (too many can cause an upset stomach).

Our family dog used to love eating the apples that fell off the tree in the back garden. She lived to be 21 😁

AnnieKayTee · 21/11/2023 19:22

My dog eats pears. His name is also Bear. (Which makes us all laugh)

When the kids get fruit from the bowl he goes with them and gets his pear. My grandmother actually buys him his weekly pears alongside treats for the kids.

Lwrenagain · 21/11/2023 19:22

@Irregardless 100% your dog has its own biscuit tin at grandma's! ♥️

To the poster who said they didn't believe it, neither would I had I not seen it, however some posters have said their grandparents have used tobacco to stop worms, maybe that's where it came from?

I know dried fruit is also apparently poisonous for dogs but my gran would give her dog fruit cake and she lived a ripe age!

I have to be careful with my dog with smokers. He’ll nab a cigarette before you can blink, he’s obsessed with them for some reason.

Grated, of course. 😂

Once watched my exMIL throw a potato for her dog to run around with it in his mouth like a toy . Then when he dropped it she put it back in the veg rack. Never ate potatoes there again!

😂😂

swimsong · 21/11/2023 19:26

It's quite possible that he keeps dog treats in a tobacco pouch - either in a used empty one or in with his tobacco.

My Yorkie likes a nice cup of tea, no sugar, in his water bowl. No-one in our house smokes so he's never had the chance of trying a bit of baccy.

Yorkshire Tea, I hope?

CheerfulBunny · 21/11/2023 19:28

One of my old dogs was a thief and loved fruit and veg (he was on a restricted diet with no fat so resentfully, would nick anything he could get his paws on). He once stole a whole bag of raw Brussels sprouts and greedily swallowed the lot. I could actually feel them in his tummy. I waited for the horrible fall out but there was nothing - unbelievable. He and his two doggy accomplices also pulled a bag of bird food off the kitchen worktop while we were out and ate a quantity of it between them. I imagine it must've been a bit disappointing as they quickly gave up with it. Next day there were little pooey muesli bars on the lawn!

Storynanny1 · 21/11/2023 19:30

We once had a cat who was obsessed with ham. She could hear a packet being opened from the other end of the garden. Or smell it. Never responded to other plastic wrapped stuff being opened. She also knew the word “ ham” and would wake up and run into the kitchen if anyone whispered the word. We even tested her by saying “jam” or other one syllable words ending in “am” and she didn’t respond at all.
If I hadn’t rationed it because of the salt content, she would have wolfed down a load of slices.
She “stole” ham from the worktops if it was left unattended by mistake.

Apples are fine, it’s apple pips that are potentially dangerous as they contain a tiny amount of arsenic, I believe. But I think a dog would have to eat dozens of apples in one sitting before it became a problem.

My dog used to have an apple every evening - I did usually pick the pips out for her though!

It's cyanide...

Yes, they are no more toxic to dogs than they are to people. Nobody's going to ingest enough arsenic to get ill by eating an apple or two.

Irregardless · 21/11/2023 19:33

I don’t want to know.. but when my mum and my dog was younger they used to walk for hours and hours by the sea. Now neither of them can walk very far so I guess this is what has become.. And my mum explained that the film was dubbed and had subtitles, as if this would make it better (my dog is nearly deaf now).

Lochness1975 · 21/11/2023 19:33

Driving through Brockenhurst and seen a horse go into the bank. Customers just walked past him without a second glance.

... and the pips will likely go right through intact anyway.

Wineisnottheanswer · 21/11/2023 19:39

@Lochness1975 . I was once trying to pull right in with my horse for a lorry to squeeze past. Someone opened the door to the estate agents we were beside from the inside. So my horse helpfully stepped inside. I was on her at the time.

Once in a Las Vegas casino, i saw a woman with a yorkie in a pram. She was smoking, drinking & playing slot machines. Dog was napping.

OneTC · 21/11/2023 19:43

There's a book or short storyI think where the guy collects all his apple pips to make enough cyanide to kill someone, but he's locked in prison for life and collecting them at one apple a day.

Now it's really gonna bug me what it's called
