(Preface by saying its a horrid evening with the news etc and I thought maybe a daft thread may be something someone could use)

Today walking around my little village I saw a man stop, get out a pouch of tobacco and give a generous (maybe a teaspoon, if we're going old school) amount to his golden retriever.
He looked at me, grinned and said, "he kicks off if I roll one and he gets nowt".
The lovely dog was looking chuffed with himself.
Now unless there is some unbeknownst health benefit to tobacco for dogs, that was lost on me.
Anyone else got something that's so fucking bizarre they'd not believe unless witnessed?

My aibu is
yabu - dogs love tobacco, you killjoy.
Yanbu - there is a reason we don't usually feed dogs tobacco.

We had a cat who loved poppadoms. If we had an Indian take-away, we'd have to order an extra one for her, and she'd insist on getting into the paper bag with it to eat it.

Possibly the weirdest thing I ever saw was a very tall man in full military ceremonial uniform, with big gold epaulettes and everything, striding up our road with a HUGE bird of prey on his arm - at least the size of a buzzard. We live on a very boring suburban street, absolutely nowhere near any military bases or falconry centres.

Not bizarre as such but a family member used to give their dog their left over apple cores, another one gave their dog a piece of their chocolate when they had some and we gave out dog a saucer of tea quite regularly. I now know that all these things are actually poisonous for dogs, but it didn't seem to do them any harm probably because they were only having small amounts. I know someone else who used to give their parrot a daily cream cake - not recommended!

Tea isn't poisonous to dogs and neither are apple cores. A lab sized dog would have to eat an orchard full of apple cores all at the same time AND crunch every seed to break the coating to be poisoned by them. Smaller dogs would need less of course but still too much to eat all at once.

I had a boxer who loved/hated sparkling water. He'd take a couple of laps, jump back, snort and sneeze and bite the air. Then he'd do that forelegs down, tail in the air barking at the bowl and go in for another lap. When the bloody stuff bit him again, he'd go full-on barking mad at it. Then start all over again. Sometimes with a run around in between goes.

Daft old soppy. Kept us entertained for ages 😂

100% your dog has its own biscuit tin at grandma's! ♥️

I don’t want to know.. but when my mum and my dog was younger they used to walk for hours and hours by the sea. Now neither of them can walk very far so I guess this is what has become.. And my mum explained that the film was dubbed and had subtitles, as if this would make it better (my dog is nearly deaf now).

Edited

I love your mum 😍 and I love your dog 🥰

2 elderly women dressed in sumo suits, giggling away with linked arms and wobbling down the road. They also were carrying handbags Grin

Oh and a man running in nothing but a reindeer thong and trainers

I once saw a woman helping her wee boy to squat and do a poo in Primark.
Some people are insane

My mum used to do soft boiled eggs with buttered brown toast soldiers for the Bassett hound every morning. He lived to be 17.

My mutt goes crazy for kebab with hot chilli sauce, and always shares my iced coffee too.

Tabacco was used for a long time to deworm animals.

My dog loves apple! I had no idea it was toxic and he's shown no signs of ill effects so far. I feel terrible now. What else is toxic bar grapes etc and chocolate?!

It's the pips that are toxic. A little piece of the actual apple is fine.

Autumnus · 21/11/2023 19:53

My old dog when I was growing up loved crispy aromatic duck pancakes complete with hoisin, cucumber and spring onion. Our horses got Guiness Stout.

I live in a seaside town and have seen seagulls wolf down all kinds of things including a whole jumbo sausage but one left me quite traumatised one day when I saw it swallow down a small bird in a big gulp 😱I saw it grabbing it in its beak and hoped I'd be quick enough to frighten it off but sadly I wasn't, poor bird. When I got home I Googled some stuff about seagulls and happened upon a video of a seagull swallowing a rabbit, never been overly fond of seagulls but now I'm slightly terrified of them.

To the poster above regarding the snail, when you say you heard it do you mean you heard it eating? I could hear some crunching/chomping one night in an old house and was searching under the sofa for mice/rats. I kept hearing this noise nightly for quite a while and then discovered it was actually slugs that had managed to get in and they were munching on the foam underlay of laminate flooring that had become exposed. 😳

Staying on the tobacco theme...

Picked DS up from school after a school trip in Y10. Was talking to one of the mums whilst waiting. Kids arrived and me and DS started walking back to the car park I'd used. I caught a whiff of smoke in the air, looked up to see the woman walking and smoking with her DS (also Y10) smoking as well.

They'd parked in the same car park as us, when we pulled off they were both still stood in the car park smoking and chatting.

I was a child of the 80's and whilst both my parents smoked they recognised its dangers and would have given me hell for starting so to see someone allowing their 15 year old to smoke in 2022 struck me as odd.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 21/11/2023 20:11

Our old cat was obsessed with bread. We had to invest in a good bread tin, he’d eat through the plastic bag to get it.

Our dog once overate fallen apples. They must have started to ferment as she was distinctly drunk that evening…

Notimefor · 21/11/2023 20:12

My cat loves popping candy - it must be quite exciting for them.

Loubelle70 · 21/11/2023 20:17

My ex SIL used to have a friend who owned fruit veg stall...she used to walk with her dog and pop by to see her mate...the stall owner started giving dog treats...bits of damaged veg, fruit. Then the butchers shop owner noticed this and started waiting for dog to stop at veg stall and pop out with a bone everytime...then the shop next door started to leave a water bowl out for the dog after all the eating it was doing 🤣. I said...get me fake dog ears..the dog collar and knee protectors..its a good gaff!!! 😁

My whippet x foxhound eat my bank card a few months ago, does this count? He’s obsessed with cards

I one dogsat a beautiful big lab for his holidays. His great joy in life was a Marmite sandwich cut into bits and thrown in the air for him to catch. I will never forget the sound of him catching it, a sort of 'shlromp' as it went into his mouth.
