Not flushing the toilet at night

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/02/2023 09:51

DH always goes to the toilet (No.1) in the night and doesn’t flush. I’ve asked him repeatedly to please flush as it doesn’t wake me or the children up and I find it really disgusting to find wee in the toilet in the morning. He thinks I’m being unreasonable and says he does it for environmental reasons not just as it might wake people up. Me and the children rarely go to the toilet in the night but on the rare occasions we do I always flush after. He says this wakes him up and I’m being unreasonable. I don’t want to budge and think he’s being unreasonable, so I’m putting it to the vote.

YANBU not flushing the toilet immediately after you’ve been is disgusting
YABU flushing the toilet at night is inconsiderate/bad for the environment

Very surprised at the responses.

I don't think it's unreasonable at all. Takes 1sec to flush.

BabyOnBoard90 · 08/02/2023 19:20

Some of the responses on this thread. Eww.

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/02/2023 19:27

I am quite shocked at the responses too, the vote is overwhelmingly against me and I take that on board but I am going to struggle to accept the wee left in the toilet. I don’t know why but it’s only lately it’s really started to bother me, I’ve been with DH 10 years!

If it’s a wee we won’t flush with children in bed as it would disturb. But no way would I not flush a poo!

Do you not flush the toilet after they go to bed at all? How does this work with young children!

Yeah, but how many litres of clean water to flush that little bit of pee?

OrchardBlack · 08/02/2023 19:29

I think YANBU OP.
My dear housemate left what can only be described as a cistern full of menstrual blood for me in the morning yesterday 😫 I made a joke about hoping no sharks were in a ten mile radius and she said she didn't want to wake me.

Eyerollcentral · 08/02/2023 19:30

I can’t understand how you can be so repulsed by some wee when you have presumably changed numerous nappies.

Eyerollcentral · 08/02/2023 19:31

Well that’s quite clearly a very different situation tbf

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/02/2023 19:34

@OrchardBlack 🤢 that is seriously not on! Poor you!

You don’t see the wee in nappies and the smell of my children’s didn’t bother me. I looked after a friend’s baby though and was retching whilst changing the poor thing’s nappy I felt awful but clearly I am very easily icked out by bodily fluids and smells. I know I’m probably unusual in this but it’s just the way I am. I can’t clean up sick without retching so my husband deals with things like that!

Eyerollcentral · 08/02/2023 19:36

In that case especially OP I wouldn’t be giving him too much of a hard time, you’ve got a free pass on the worst bodily fluid of all 😭

PrtScn · 08/02/2023 19:44

We never flush after a wee, only after a poo. The only time I'll flush after a wee is if I'm on my period, unless I'm home alone. Toilet seat always stays down though.

And wastes an awful lot of water, especially if you are well hydrated. It also costs money if you are on a meter!

OCDmama · 08/02/2023 20:01

Yabu.

I'm not sure what people think is unhygienic about leaving a wee (which, if you're even relatively healthy isn't unhygienic itself) in a loo overnight. It's sitting in water FFS. You still don't have to touch it or do anything with it - unless you're all running to drink out of the loo in the morning??

Those voting YANBU need to get a serious grip as far as I'm concerned. Seeing a wee (in water!!!) isn't even a first world problem. It's somewhere along emperor level problem.

tornadoinsideoutfig · 08/02/2023 20:04

We never flush for wees unless expecting company, it's a huge waste of water.

tornadoinsideoutfig · 08/02/2023 20:08

I assume you wouldn't like him controlling you by saying you aren't allowed to flush, so it's wrong to try to make him flush. A poo is obviously different as the smell lingers and affects others, diluted wee doesn't hurt anyone. You can flush before you use the toilet if it bothers you.

Theo1756 · 08/02/2023 20:15

meetmeatmidnights · 08/02/2023 10:00

I think if flushing wakes him up in the night it's unreasonable to do it, when it causes zero harm leaving it until the morning. It's best just to have a rule of not flushing in the night for everyone rather than he can flush because it doesn't wake you guys and you shouldn't flush because it'll wake him, it's begging for confusion.

We don't flush at night unless it's a poo in this house!

If you do flush in the night for a poo, you just immediately shout “it was a poo! It was a poo!”

BabyOnBoard90 · 08/02/2023 20:42

gamerchick · 08/02/2023 19:28

@PrtScn

Modern toilets come with different flush levels so not a lot actually

Hongkongsuey · 08/02/2023 20:44

I would hate to use the loo first thing and find it full of wee that’s been festering overnight. I also think it’s gross not to close the lid too. So I’m with you😁

Hankunamatata · 08/02/2023 20:50

Only no 2 get flushed at night.

CraneBoysMysteries · 08/02/2023 20:51

@BabyOnBoard90 still about 5 litres even on modern loos for a small amount of wee. That's an awful lot

I'm definitely on the don't flush side and have never woken up to urine smells

Eskimokid · 08/02/2023 20:53

It's a loo and it's wee, I can't see what the issue is. We don't flush at night and I'd be well annoyed if someone did and woke me up!

My husband doesn't flush in the morning if I'm still.asleep and sometimes it will be there all day as I might not use that bathroom. It just doesn't bother me. The loos all get cleaned regularly and it doesn't smell.

pompomdaisy · 08/02/2023 20:53

We don't flush at night. It's not grim. If that's grim then you need to expand your horizons a lot!

PixieLaLa · 08/02/2023 20:56

YANBU I totally agree with you, flush the toilet!
I have never been woken up by the flush of a toilet. I have been repulsed in the morning to find an un-flushed one however!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 08/02/2023 20:59

Sunriseinwonderland · 08/02/2023 09:57

It eventually stains the toilet.

Not if you regularly clean the toilet it doesn’t.

Foster good habits of putting the seat down and then ensure you flush before you go if you don’t like the look of it.
