Not flushing the toilet at night

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/02/2023 09:51

DH always goes to the toilet (No.1) in the night and doesn’t flush. I’ve asked him repeatedly to please flush as it doesn’t wake me or the children up and I find it really disgusting to find wee in the toilet in the morning. He thinks I’m being unreasonable and says he does it for environmental reasons not just as it might wake people up. Me and the children rarely go to the toilet in the night but on the rare occasions we do I always flush after. He says this wakes him up and I’m being unreasonable. I don’t want to budge and think he’s being unreasonable, so I’m putting it to the vote.

YANBU not flushing the toilet immediately after you’ve been is disgusting
YABU flushing the toilet at night is inconsiderate/bad for the environment

Urine is 95% water and doesn't contain harmful microorganisms so flushing really isn't necessary every time. We don't flush in the night as it does wake other up.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 08/02/2023 11:43

I'd flush but it would be an automatic reaction 🤷‍♀️
Wouldn't bother me if nobody else flushed in the night.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/02/2023 11:47

fun fact

It is illegal to flush the toilet after 10pm in an apartment building in Switzerland as the government considers it noise pollution.

:)

saleorbouy · 08/02/2023 11:47

Flushing away 100ml of urine with 4litres of water everytime is an absurd waste of clean drinking water in the first world.
For those of you that find it grim not to flush urine everytime that's fine but you can hardly complain about your huge water bills or hose pipe bans in the summer.
Personally I don't find it grim and have a little more tolerance to our first world clean freak issues.

I find that disgusting too. Hygiene comes first as far as I am concerned.

You have my sympathy OP.

There is nothing, and I means nothing unhygienic about not flushing wee. Jesus wept

If me or DH go to the loo in the night we never flush if it's just pee. Don't flush every time we wee during the day either. Do people not care about the waste of water, especially the people that pee so many times a day?

If I am working from home I don't flush in the day either. I'm on my own all day. I tend to flush at the weekend and everyone else is in so I am the 'flusher' 🤣

Some people just seem crazy. No wonder the planet is fucked.

We only flush for a number two or if there is lots of toilet paper in the loo.

Honestly our toilets get flushed twice a day each maximum - there are three of us!

I clean each toilet every night before I go to bed - they always look brand new, no staining.

I am in my third trimester and I am getting up four times a night for a wee - imagine the water waste if I flushed each time!

DulcetTones · 08/02/2023 14:48

Any time I've let it "mellow", I've found that the room smells by the next time someone comes to use it. I vote for flushing, and I'll do my bit to save the planet in some other way that doesn't leave the house reeking. 🙄

Someone's household needs to drink more water

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 08/02/2023 14:50

DH and I don’t flush in the night so as not to disturb each other (en suite). It’s only ever a bit of wee. Our toilet is not even remotely stained.

I can’t believe people get their knickers in a twist over seeing a bit of wee.

And OP YABVU to continue to do something that you know wakes your DH. That’s really mean.

Abouttimemum · 08/02/2023 14:50

In the words of Dustin Hoffman, if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.

Aworldofmyown · 08/02/2023 14:50

I could totally understand if he wee'd in a bucket and left it on your side of the bed!! 😆
We don't flush at every wee becausea
A) the environment and B) your literally flushing money down drain.

DesertRose64 · 08/02/2023 14:51

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/02/2023 10:05

Just to say it is very very rare that me and children go in the night be he goes every night without fail.

Has he had his prostrate checked?

philautia · 08/02/2023 14:51

@DulcetTones could be that someone in the family needs to get checked at the doctor? Urine doesn't "reek" unless left for days.

My house smells lovely, certainly no smell of urine anywhere, even next to the toilets, just smells of toilet cleaner.

NameNight · 08/02/2023 14:53

Hmmmm. My DH getting out of bed to go to the toilet wakes me, full stop, and I just go back to sleep. Unless your DH is someone who really struggled to go back to sleep after they've been woken, I think he is being unreasonable.

Zaliea · 08/02/2023 14:59

Unusual to go every night

DH has to go every night because he drinks so much water. I've never met someone who drinks as much water as he does. And he goes to bed with a massive camping bottle of water next to him too.

I go every night because I drink multiple cups of tea before bed.

Kaftanesque · 08/02/2023 15:00

Don't flush here after a nightime wee .In fact do my first wee when It's morning then flush. What a dirty minger I must be! Nevertheless I keep a very clean house am hale and healthy and think we're ridiculously germ obsessed.I hate waste and detest the overuse of chemical cleaners but still have a very clean toilet bowl.

gamerchick · 08/02/2023 15:02

You don't flush pee in the middle of the night. There's no need.

rwalker · 08/02/2023 15:09

Put cap cap full of bleach down last thing
so when he wee’s it’ll take the edge off it

think very selfish to flush knowing it wakes him up

HoodieBell · 08/02/2023 15:10

We don't flush if it's a wee most times UNLESS, it's a night time or first thing wee, they are a lot more concentrated and smell. So I think you're both wrong and also both right!

Fenella123 · 08/02/2023 15:15

OP it is preferable if everyone leaves the lid down. Over the years it only takes a couple of things to fall in for it very much to be worthwhile!!

Allblackeverythingalways · 08/02/2023 15:22

My ex used to do this, it stank.
There's nothing nice about heaving whilst you're getting ready in the morning.
ALWAYS flush.

georgarina · 08/02/2023 15:40

Some of my family members do this and when we went on holiday it completely stank, it was vile.

I also don't do it because we live in a very hard water area and it causes bad urine scale - I would have to clean the toilet bowl every morning.
