make speeches lauding the UK for the opportunities it gave their parents and themselves then try to snatch them away from others after they have benefitted from those opportunities?
Makes no sense to me, at all 🤷‍♀️
Of course, the obvious answer is that their parents arrived into the UK via legal routes.
Many of those legal routes no longer exist (very deliberately) and this Government (if it can be called such) seems to be doing it’s level best to override the asylum system (as Conservative governments have been for some years).
I welcome immigration. Our nation is what it is thanks to it. Has been for millennia.

I don't know anyone who likes her - so I can't answer that.

That's not whats being asked, however she comes across as a horrid human being so I'm with you I don't know anyone who likes her either.

Scurryfunge12 · 19/10/2022 22:19

I can’t fathom why either. She reeks of evil to me. She looked like a psychopath as she was saying how she was obsessed with deporting refugees to Rwanda.

Very dangerous woman.

Kendodd · 19/10/2022 22:22

Is it because she shares their dreams of sending Johnny foreigner to Rwanda?

Hobbesmanc · 19/10/2022 22:23

She's barking mad. And thoroughly unpleasant. Although like Pritti Patel and Diane Abbott I think she gets more hate because she's a woman of colour. There's lots of nasty right wing white males who escape the same level of (deserved) vitriol.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2022 22:25

Thanks to everyone who replied.
Nothing to do, though, with liking or otherwise. I don’t know the person so have no opinion about her character. I’m trying to understand the justification for her position on immigration. It makes no sense to me.

She has such an ugly heart. Revels in nastiness for what, popularity? Was she hated at school or something?

Leakingroofagain · 19/10/2022 22:27

Because presumably she has been brought up by parents who have had to fight for everything and earn their place, and so rather than turning it around and making it easier on people she feels that others also need to earn their place. If they can do it so can you etc etc. But I don't know the woman and I don't want to make generalisations about 'people'. She's very articulate. I don't agree with her politics but neither can I say she looks like a psychopath! Can't help thinking her and Priti Patel are being stereotyped similarly.

Fenella123 · 19/10/2022 22:27

Morbid entertainment value? !

Quitelikeit · 19/10/2022 22:29

why attack her? Has she done something to you personally

The smirk on her face as she described her ‘dream’ and ‘obsession’ of a plane full of immigrants sent to Rwanda on the front page of the telegraph is sick and evil. So I’d say psychopath was at least a close assessment. No ordinary person gets their kicks like that, no matter your views on immigration.

DashboardConfessional · 19/10/2022 22:37

It's gross. Imagine pandering to voters who, if you had been born 30 years later, would take one look at you and your family in a boat on the channel and say the RNLI should let you drown.

Am I attacking her? I don’t think I am.
I’m trying to understand why a child of immigrants who is clearly thankful to the UK for asylum seems so determined to prevent others from benefitting from the same opportunities.

OP posts:
Lockheart · 19/10/2022 22:41

Because she made a few throwaway comments about transgender ideology and apparently that's enough for lots of people on MN to ignore literally everything else she's ever done and hail her as a hero.

Is it because she shares their dreams of sending Johnny foreigner to Rwanda?“

Well, yes she obviously does. But WHY? Why on earth as the daughter of immigrants would she share that (disgusting) dream?
That’s exactly my question. If I had benefitted from an asylum system, I would want as many others as possible to benefit and have the same opportunities too, not pull the ladder up behind me. I just can’t get my head around where someone with her view is coming from.

ie: my parents benefitted from the UK immigration system. They raised me, an intelligent child, (children, don’t know if she has siblings?) who could decided to repay that asylum and opportunity by contributing to public life.
So, that child goes on to do their level best to prevent immigration by others?
It’s just nonsensical.

Why does she say such things? A bit like why Thatcher said her things.

Braverman: my family did it legally so should yours - ignoring the fact that most legal routes have been removed.

Thatcher: I made it on my own merits, so should you - ignoring the fact that she married a millionaire who supported her a nd her ambitions.

I'm short, a complete and utter lack of self awareness

MintJulia · 19/10/2022 23:15

Her opinions are vile. The way she presents herself in parliament is vile. Maybe those who know her personally see a more appealing side but everything I've seen of her is utterly horrible. I can't imagine why anyone would vote for her.

She doesn't even seem particularly intelligent. I'm relieved she's gone.

Gymrabbit · 19/10/2022 23:18

many people like ‘tough on immigration’ policies.
many of these people live in areas where they are competing for jobs, housing, schools and doctors appointments with fairly recently arrived immigrants.
Many people also consider protestors who cause massive disruption to other peoples lives as ‘over privileged pricks’ - Braverman said similar.
her thoughts appear to be in line with many Working class Sun reader types.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/10/2022 23:20

Because they'll sell their soul for power.

FreezingThyme · 19/10/2022 23:22

I'm so glad she's gone. As someone from an immigrant family how the hell do you get to want to send migrants who have risked life and limb to leave whatever country they felt was worth that risk to get out of, to Rwanda? And say it's your dream to send as many of them there as possible. Whoever ends up on UK shores, I want them to be safe and ok and to be treated humanely. She is vile. My family came to the UK to escape persecution. Im so thankful that someone like this wasn't endorsing such inhuman policies at the time .

If only it were that simple. She clearly and fervently believes everything she says, though. Why, given her family history, is what I just don’t understand?
Shouldn’t anyone with the same background want other people to benefit from the same opportunities?

You op are in the minority on immigration. And this has been observed for decades and was a problems with brown and Blair's government too migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/uk-public-opinion-toward-immigration-overall-attitudes-and-level-of-concern/ . Curbing immigration is immensely popular except on the hard left Mumsnet.

Booklover3 · 20/10/2022 00:20

I honestly don’t know

Gymrabbit · 20/10/2022 09:18

‘She doesn't even seem particularly intelligent.’

Yes Cambridge and the Sarbonne are well known for letting stupid people study there.
