Is this how men talk? Is this acceptable? Met police court case

What police 'allegedly' talk about when discussing rapes, DV victims, people with disabilities.....

www.lbc.co.uk/news/met-cops-sent-racist-and-sexist-whatsapp-messages-to-wayne-couzens-group/

"Detectives found material on the WhatsApp group stored on an old phone belonging to Couzens, the former officer who was jailed for life over Ms Everard's rape and murder."

It goes on further

"in the chat, jokes were made about West London being a "f Somalian s*hole", while in another exchange, Mr Neville said his experience of "struggle snuggles" had helped him pin "a 15 year old girl going mental to the floor".

Btw struggle snuggles was their term for rape.

"In another exchange, Mr Cobban said domestic violence victims "love it" and "that’s why they are repeat victims more often than not".

on and on it goes.

This is who protects us? This is who we report crimes to? This is who we are supposed to trust and respect?

AIBU in wanting to fucking protest outside that court?

They've plead not guilty.

Dalint · 29/07/2022 16:40

Apparently they're professional on the job. Just banter I guess.

I'll join you in protesting if you feel organising something.

"Struggle snuggles" makes me feel physically sick.

5zeds · 29/07/2022 16:42

They’re disgusting.

BiscoffSundae · 29/07/2022 16:42

Of course some men think this way, I’ve heard the DV one and that’s why it’s not as easy as people think to “just go to the police” I never went to the police about things that happened with my ex as I don’t trust them one bit

prisscalledwanda · 29/07/2022 16:43

Couldn't agree more. Cannot get my head round them pleading not guilty. Nothing on the met's website about it, what a surprise.

LampLighter414 · 29/07/2022 16:43

Tory Britain

the PM sets the tone at the top with who he employs and how he treats women in his personal life

Florenz · 29/07/2022 16:45

Police "canteen culture" has been the same for many years, regardless of whom is in government.

YouAreNotBatman · 29/07/2022 16:46

It has just become so crystal clear how much men truly hate women.
Many of them go as far as assaults etc, rest of them just passively goes along / enjoy it.

caramac04 · 29/07/2022 16:47

I’ve read most of the messages and they are worse than I suspected. It made me feel sick and I’m really not sure if I’d trust the police if I needed to report a crime where I, or a female relative, were the victim.

WifeMotherWorkRepeat · 29/07/2022 16:51

They are just revolting!

I really don’t think you can blame the Tories for this despicable behaviour and misogynistic attitude. Unfortunately this sort of thing has been rife in the police for decades, for example everyone and I mean everyone is sleeping with each other, there are just no morals or ethical standards.

DialsMavis · 29/07/2022 16:53

Absolutely revolting, the MET is a cess pool.

AnyFucker · 29/07/2022 16:57

This is nothing to do with “Tory Britain” or Boris Johnson.

These are simply more examples how much men (as a class) hate women and how certain professions are more likely to attract prime examples of that.

Dalint · 29/07/2022 16:59

I have been a victim of rape and they could not have been any more useless. Now I know why. I probably enjoyed it. Maybe it was the first bit of action I had seen. They're a disgust. If you represent a company, you are fired for any sniff of disrepute. These? They should all be fired. Every single last one of them. It only takes one rotten apple to rot the barrel. The only reason they have access to what those men said is because one of them killed and raped a woman. I'm pretty sure that it's rife. I've never heard men speak like that.

OP posts:
Simonjt · 29/07/2022 17:02

The problem is men who do talk like that will gravitate to each other, when in a group it often ‘proves’ to them that their behaviour is normal and okay. If they then manage to gain power that then makes it essentially impossible for people below to speak out, as if they do they’ll be bullied, shamed and possibly even fired.

It's Westminster Magistrate's court. I don't know how you could find out when they are in court? I'm not sure that it mentioned how long the trial would last?

I agree to an extent, Boris Johnson being Prime Minister is more a symptom than a cause of endemic, rampant misogyny.

It certainly hasn't helped, though. Johnson's open contempt for women and children has a normalising and legitimising effect that compounds the problem. Just as Brexit didn't cause pig-ignorant racism and xenophobia, but it's been a shot in the arm for those who hold those views.

AnyFucker · 29/07/2022 17:05

You won’t hear them. These are “normal” family men with wives and families. But scratch the surface and you will find it.

The veneer of respectability is very thin and it is only fear of reprisals that keep it in place. When the fear goes, or they perceive the “support” of others in their misogyny then we get the Couzens outcome.

Dalint · 29/07/2022 17:07

I'm pretty sure that the only reason the detectives disclosed the content was to nail Couzens, NOT to nail his fellows.

ChilliPB · 29/07/2022 17:08

Honestly it doesn’t surprise me. I was a special constable (volunteer PC) in the met about 8 years ago. The amount of inappropriate comments/jokes etc about women/people with MH problems etc was horrible and the reason I didn’t stick at it.

Its horrendous but not shocking.

MintJulia · 29/07/2022 17:10

Yanbu to want those officers thrown out of the Met, denied their pensions and prosecuted under every discrimination law the lawyers can find. I'll come and protest with you.

BUT

I lived with a Met officer for 10 years, and he would have cut out his own tongue rather than speak as these men did. And he would have reported any colleague who did. They are NOT all the same. Please don't believe that.

The new Commissioner has a major task on his hands weeding out every single officer who thinks this is in any way acceptable. Let's hope he takes it seriously. It is painfully obvious that Cressida Dick did not.

Courts publish court lists which will show who's appearing and when, should be on google

IncompleteSenten · 29/07/2022 17:41

The police force attracts a frighteningly high number of dangerous men and until this is addressed, nothing will ever change.

DrBlackbird · 29/07/2022 17:41

“It seems like almost every week there is a word that is offensive. How are you supposed to know what is offensive?” said Joel Borders, who had joked with other officers about raping and beating a colleague and using Tasers on people with Down’s syndrome" Borders also said: “I can’t wait to get on guns so I can shoot some cunt in the face!”

Replace ‘rape’ with any other significant crime and it’d be hard to see how their comments were not just offensive but criminal. ‘Joking’ about planting explosives or planning murder or aggravated assault with a weapon or planning a terrorist attack in a series of online exchanges and I think there’d be a different response. Somehow with threatening rape we’re told to lighten up, it’s only a joke.
