Is this how men talk? Is this acceptable? Met police court case

What police 'allegedly' talk about when discussing rapes, DV victims, people with disabilities.....

www.lbc.co.uk/news/met-cops-sent-racist-and-sexist-whatsapp-messages-to-wayne-couzens-group/

"Detectives found material on the WhatsApp group stored on an old phone belonging to Couzens, the former officer who was jailed for life over Ms Everard's rape and murder."

It goes on further

"in the chat, jokes were made about West London being a "f Somalian s*hole", while in another exchange, Mr Neville said his experience of "struggle snuggles" had helped him pin "a 15 year old girl going mental to the floor".

Btw struggle snuggles was their term for rape.

"In another exchange, Mr Cobban said domestic violence victims "love it" and "that’s why they are repeat victims more often than not".

on and on it goes.

This is who protects us? This is who we report crimes to? This is who we are supposed to trust and respect?

AIBU in wanting to fucking protest outside that court?

They are just revolting!

I really don’t think you can blame the Tories for this despicable behaviour and misogynistic attitude. Unfortunately this sort of thing has been rife in the police for decades, for example everyone and I mean everyone is sleeping with each other, there are just no morals or ethical standards.

But why are they recruiting these people? Where are the psychological checks, personality tests, background checks? Where is the monitoring? Why was somebody openly called "the rapist" as a nickname yet not fired?

In most professional jobs one such incident is instant dismissal for professional misconduct. The police need to come down on this HARD. Turn out the trash and start recruiting people with some basic decency. It needs to be zero tolerance. They are meant to lead by example.

SheeplessAndCounting · 29/07/2022 19:44

Currently it seems to consist of pathethic little men and incels and a power trip. Somebody needs to be put in charge from outside who will stamp on it all. Properly this time.

"Currently" is doing a lot of work in this sentence.

Anybody who speaks like that in their professional capacity should be fired immediately. You can't stop people being arseholes, but we can make damn sure that none of them are in the privileged position of serving and protecting our population.

And find it hard to ever get another job again.

It should also become a criminal offence to abuse their power, and they should be sent to prison. That might improve behaviour.

Ihatemyroad · 29/07/2022 20:02

Absolutely some men think and talk this way.

But thankfully they’re not all police officers and those that are shouldn’t be!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 29/07/2022 20:02

Simonjt · 29/07/2022 17:02

The problem is men who do talk like that will gravitate to each other, when in a group it often ‘proves’ to them that their behaviour is normal and okay. If they then manage to gain power that then makes it essentially impossible for people below to speak out, as if they do they’ll be bullied, shamed and possibly even fired.

Completely agree with this. My DP worked with a group of these idiots. He reported them several times and it was just glossed over because the person in charge didn't want to lose face with 'the lads'. He couldn't cope listening to them and it was making a very obvious (to me) impact on him. He had to change shift patterns in the end.

The big failing for the department at the time was arsehole behaviour going unchecked - yet no one was willing to change it going forward when my DP made an official complaint. He was then reported by a crew member for not being able to take a joke as he 'obviously had something wrong with him'.

They’re disgusting.

This

Dalint · 29/07/2022 23:49

I am angry. So fucking angry. The gall of them to plead not-guilty.

No this NOT how most men talk. The police as an organisation attracts a large number of the biggest scumbags society has to offer (probably due to the power trip the job provides them with no questions asked). None of this is new but I'm pleased they are finally being exposed for what they are.

Appalonia · 30/07/2022 00:36

It's not banter, it's hate. 100%agree with this. I hope these tickets are jailed for this. How can we, as women, have ANY confidence in the police when they are so blatant and unrepentant about these appalling, overtly misogynistic attitudes!?

Appalonia · 30/07/2022 00:39

Tickets?? No I meant fuckers! Autocorrect....

SisterRuth · 30/07/2022 01:45

I agree, it's hate, pure & simple. They said domestic violence is just "women not listening" the inference being, I suppose, that men are entitled to make them listen. They are utter scum & they'd never have been caught but for the fact their whatsapp group included Couzens.

bloodyplanes · 30/07/2022 02:23

Having worked with plenty of ex police officers this does not shock me one bit!

Yes, that's basic psychology.

The question is why police procedures for recruitment and continued employment do not preclude such people from holding roles where they have power over other people.

SheeplessAndCounting · 30/07/2022 02:30

These are the people the police should be locking up, not the people who are paid by us all to protect us. What a joke.

But everyone's so quick to say NAMALT.

Problem is, they are. Husbands, dads, sons, grandfathers.

Whose though? Not mine. Step forward and call the fucks out if they are your relations.

theniceunderstandingone · 30/07/2022 02:52

Yes I read these yesterday. My mouth was open the whole time. Absolutely vile. And to think these men are supposed to protect us

lemmein · 30/07/2022 04:51

My DD was raped. She refused to report it...I was relieved.

Men like that should just be put down, they serve no purpose - pure scum.

Earthrocknroll · 30/07/2022 06:44

Sadly not just Britain. An article just reported cops in Australia saying very similar things about mental health, DV and tape victims, people with disabilities….. It’s universal and utterly appalling.

Rinatinabina · 30/07/2022 06:56

No most men don’t talk like this yes it’s utterly revolting. I agree with PP that men like this gravitate to each other because most normal people would be like “bit much mate” and distance themselves.

SaintHelena · 30/07/2022 07:08

I'm on an older adult family WhatsApp group and there are often mildly inappropriate jokes etc

I think that 'banter' is prob the norm on many watsapp / tiktok/ txt groups as up until relatively recently it's all been seen as private.

I doubt it's only the police.

FindingMeno · 30/07/2022 07:14

I will not deal with the police unless I have no choice.
It's at best pointless, and at worst dangerous.
I have held this view for many years.
