Is this how men talk? Is this acceptable? Met police court case

What police 'allegedly' talk about when discussing rapes, DV victims, people with disabilities.....

www.lbc.co.uk/news/met-cops-sent-racist-and-sexist-whatsapp-messages-to-wayne-couzens-group/

"Detectives found material on the WhatsApp group stored on an old phone belonging to Couzens, the former officer who was jailed for life over Ms Everard's rape and murder."

It goes on further

"in the chat, jokes were made about West London being a "f Somalian s*hole", while in another exchange, Mr Neville said his experience of "struggle snuggles" had helped him pin "a 15 year old girl going mental to the floor".

Btw struggle snuggles was their term for rape.

"In another exchange, Mr Cobban said domestic violence victims "love it" and "that’s why they are repeat victims more often than not".

on and on it goes.

This is who protects us? This is who we report crimes to? This is who we are supposed to trust and respect?

AIBU in wanting to fucking protest outside that court?

To be universally hated for being a victim of dv, rape, for being black, for being a victim of FGM, for having a disability; that is soul destroying. You? You need to be reported.

I work in the health service and it is true that “dark” humour is often employed to cope with how utterly awful it can be. Non medics would be shocked.

Not to this extent though. Not in this depraved way. The kind of comments made by the likes of Couzens and his army of women-hating inadequates are in a class of their own.

Whitewolf2 · 30/07/2022 17:43

Its such disgusting behaviour. There should be no doubt over their sacking and public outrage that they were ever in positions of any power. Which I think is my issue, how do you stop this? How many of the police are like this? Do people with these views seek out positions where they have power over others, I imagine they do so how can we prevent this…I bet there are some at the top who don’t care or are part of the problem.

You know what thread you're on.

You know what things the police officers have been saying and that this is a long term and widespread issue.

You are claiming it's 'dark humour'.

You said that hospital workers etc are the same and that this 'dark humour' is required in order to do the job.

You said we are all naive and it is very common and if we only knew what paramedics and morgue workers etc were 'joking' about...

So. On a thread about police officers making so called jokes about rape victims, DV victims, calling rape struggle snuggles, sneering at DV victims etc etc, you add hospital workers and front line services into the group that need this 'dark humour' which has already been established includes a lots of deeply disturbing things...

What are we supposed to think you are telling us if not that what the police say is also said by hospital staff etc?

This is a case of "we're so nice, underpaid, overworked, we can't cope with the job without demeaning those who we serve, demeaning those who we should protect and fantasising about rape, murder, sexual assault, shooting animals, shooting people with Down's Syndrome".

You should be reported to your superior asap.

They are totally misogynists. Like many women of my age (60s), I had to put up with sexist nonsense throughout my career. But nothing as bad as this. For what it's worth, my DH was just as outraged as I was.

Dalint · 30/07/2022 17:49

These officers will be ousted because the met can't afford the shit press . People say stuff all the time in private but act differently in reality. In many walks of life and in many jobs .

I'd love to know what you say in private because I have worked in multiple industries and I have never come across this shit.

Jaxhog · 30/07/2022 17:50

Also, my DM worked in casualty for many years and never heard anything nearly as bad as this. She had (and has) a dark sense of humour, but this is just gross.

All the police officers in the force that claim they've never reported it, because they've never seen it, I call bullshit.

Agree, complete liars.

Horrendous. Sadly I'm not surprised, as many have said it has been that way for years.

I've been watching earlier series of a (fictional) show that was about the MET over the last few months. In one of the episodes (1991) was about a rape on a prostitute where only one female officer in the show wanted to deal with it. One officer openly mocked her to her face, the other told her that it was classed as non payment of goods. A male Sgt said that it didn't matter and would never get taken on by the cps. A male CID inspector openly said in the woman's hearing "who would want to touch that?". Its nothing new. The late 80s episodes were horrendous. The amount of shoulder shrugging about domestics and returning battered wives to their homes after telling them they couldn't help them or stop their husband beating/raping them.

What should be reported for? Being a police officer supporting depraved views.

HashtagShitShop · 30/07/2022 17:57

Pressed send too early. Meant to add that I'm not on the slightest surprised that it's still like that in the real world.. We will never be 100 percent safe, even with those who are there to protect us

lovelychops · 30/07/2022 18:03

I feel that there are more bad police offers than good. Those on the thread who work in the police and say they would report this kind of talk- I think it would amount to nothing. This kind of hate and misogyny is systematic and why certain types are attracted to the police in the first instance. Reporting these people would do nothing. You would be in a minority to find it abhorrent.
These types of people gravitate towards these positions of power for a reason. Scum.
I hardly feel surprised by any of it. Disgusted yes, but not surprised.

kateclarke · 30/07/2022 18:04

I am a nurse who has worked in ED and intensive care. We DO NOT speak disrespectfully about our patients or have a 'dark sense of humour ' we deal with the horrific things we see like professionals.

Mookie81 · 30/07/2022 18:07

When ive heard anything that needed challenging I've challenged it to the persons face . But I've never heard anything like these comments reported

In the words of Davide...'LIAAAAR!'

FlorettaB · 30/07/2022 18:12

When you have a work environment where this language and attitude is accepted or at least tolerated, anyone who wants to report it is faced with reporting it to someone who is already well aware of it and does nothing about it. Senior officers must know the way things are.

Weatherwithme · 30/07/2022 11:42

you now must have a degree or do a degree level apprenticeship to be in the police. When I left school you could join with 5 passes at 16. So for a long time it (and the army) were one of the few ‘professions’ you could join if you weren’t bright enough to do A levels. Raising the education standard will help but take a long time to achieve change until more educated recruits get promoted up the ranks. For decades the police recruited from a pool of immature white boys with few qualifications. This is basically how that group behaved at school and then they just went into a job with a similar group / pack mentality to the school locker room.

To be honest, I’ve heard the term struggle snuggle before. I have worked in almost exclusively male environments for more than 38 years including the army. My best mate is a copper and I’ve socialised with his colleagues. I’m not at all surprised at the comments. They’re horrific. Your point about education helping is probably right but they have a long way to go. I have heard opinions on the new graduate entry officers and they aren’t positive.

Part of the problem will be those commenting are resentful but there may be other issues. It appears that the universities aren’t painting a realistic picture of what a police officer does. Some are assuming that the degree means they’ll be slid into plum jobs, no nights and won’t have to do the grunt work.

The other issue you may face is that those trying to fit in will sink to the level of those around them.

@stillvicarinatutu
I'm a long time poster who has name changed and I know how decent you have come across, how kind you have been to posters in distress on threads over the years.

It's no consolation but our Irish police force have bad apples too.
Only this week an Irish garda ( policeman ) was convicted of the most heinous crimes against his partner. Utterly appalling crimes. His pathetic sentence was just 3 years and 3 months. He'll probably be out in 2 years. Sad

Unfortunately this isn't limited to The Met.
These officers were suspended on full pay for almost 5 years.

Taking photos of a suicide victim, moving and posing his body. Exposing his genitals. These images were shared and joked about within a WhatsApp group containing PSNI officers.

They know they can share it, they know it's accepted.
