Ashamed to be british

Despite the bombing of a maternity hospital by Putin.
Today we find out exactly what Ukrainians need to do to gain asylum in the UK.

  1. Create an online account - on the home office website & fill in a lengthy and detailed application form.
  2. Upload proof that their qualifying family member has permanent residence status in the UK - they suggest a copy of the home office vignette embedded in the passport
  3. Upload proof of residence in the UKraine for a full year
4.Provide and upload proof of familial relationship with the family member. Birth certificates & marriage certificates of all concerned. 5.Make sure all documents are translated into English before uploading 6.Book and attend an IN-PERON appointment at a home office visa application centre in Poland, Hungary, Romania or France. So that officials can take biometrics and copies of all documents already uploaded. The booking system for appointment frequently crashes & the next available appointment as of today is in two weeks time - at any of the venues
  1. Get a tuberculosis vaccination & certificate - have it translated & upload
8.wait at SAME address while home office workers in the UK assess. Be available for phone or zoom interview.

In a fucking war zone. I despair. I truly despair & despise this government with all my heart. Patel is a sociopath & Johnson an idiot.

I'm ashamed 😓

Me too. But apparently this is the treatment for refugees / immigrants that the majority of British people wanted.

Justcallmebebes · 10/03/2022 12:28

I agree and have emailed my MP this morning to tell her so. I think they have just announced changes to the system within the last hour or so. Whether those changes go far enough remains to be seen

XelaM · 10/03/2022 12:28

Absolutely OP. It's shocking

Juancornetto · 10/03/2022 12:31

Have you got a link where it shows the requirements? I want to write to my MP but need to have the official info to refer to

Catclean · 10/03/2022 12:32

I've been concerned about this for a while. But - you could argue it's the will of the people couldn't you? Should we ease the rules for people who are refugees from war in Ukraine but keep these strict measures in place for refugees from war in other countries?
Or should be apply fairly across the board. Do you treat Ukrainians differently to Syrians for example.
I agree, it's awful, and has highlighted a situation that the public either previously was unaware of, or just didn't care about.

CowsAreNotGreen · 10/03/2022 12:33

Are they meant to do this in Ukraine?! This is ridiculous. Where is the link to the info?

MiniCooper15 · 10/03/2022 12:35

It's standard for refuges with brown or black skin.
Haven't heard much complaints about this previously.

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 10/03/2022 12:35

Is this the process for refugees usually? If so YABU for only caring about Ukrainian refugees and not the 100s of 1000s of people fleeing war usually. I don't agree with the process or how we treat refugees but it is annoying me that NOW people are caring about how appallingly we treat people fleeing war torn countries.

carmenitapink · 10/03/2022 12:35

This exactly.

Those who care now / are outraged now but didn't care when this is how syrian refugees were treated (also a war largely financed and backed by putin) should look at themselves and wonder why.

Seems qwhite obvious to me! lol

beachcitygirl · 10/03/2022 12:38

Hi all.

I heard Victoria Derbyshire refer to the rules & she has put a copy on her twitter today.

To previous poster - I don't think Ukrainian refugees are exceptional, but the situation is at the moment. I believe help should be expedited & doors opened.

I think we should have a humane & decent set of rules for all refugees & an understanding in gvmt & society that we need to do our share.
Migrants & refugees are not interchangeable words - much as the hate Mail would have us believe they are.

In the UK we have room. Let in desperate people fleeing war & bombs

👆This exactly, why the sudden outrage, shock & shame now, when it’s been going on for years? 🧐
TangerineClay · 10/03/2022 12:40

I'm appalled at our government and those who voted for them. This isn't a new thing for me as I've felt that way for a few years. I'm not personally ashamed as I've never based my identity on my nationality. I see it as an accident of birth rather than something to be proud of like an achievement or the reverse.

Boxowine · 10/03/2022 12:42

Why are you ashamed to be British? The shame in this situation falls squarely on Putin.

Impier · 10/03/2022 12:42

Isn't this visa process in addition to the normal asylum process, giving an alternative and quicker route to staying in the UK?

cookiemonster2468 · 10/03/2022 12:43

This is what the country wanted and voted for when they voted for Brexit and our current government.

Not what I wanted though. I'm not ashamed to be British but I'm ashamed of those who voted in these policies.

Landedonfeet · 10/03/2022 12:43

Not in the slightest

Agrudge · 10/03/2022 12:45

I'm proud to british . And what we've achieved for such a small island nation

Precisely.
roseky · 10/03/2022 12:50

This is and has been the process for migrants and refugees for years. It's appalling, slow, expensive, invasive - deliberately so. Anyone who has navigated the system will know how horrific it is.
People only care now because these refugees are white.

Tiredly · 10/03/2022 12:55

You're only ashamed just now?
Plenty of people fleeing war zones in non white countries gave to do this and I bet you weren't ashamed then!

Ketchupman · 10/03/2022 12:56

What would happen if there were no checks whatsoever and we threw our borders open to anyone during the war? How do you know that the people coming as refugees are not Russian soldiers who have legged it? How can you support people effectively when you've got no details or records or anything about them? I don't think it's the same as what Poland and so on are doing, that's an immediate humanitarian need rather than longer term resettlement.

Yet this is the first time this has come to your attention.

I have many many many times. But then I'm not white. I recognise some people are just realising what the situation is in the Uk but if they're realising now & are angry then that's all to the good & we can hopefully manage to eventually win hearts & minds over to all refugees. Be they from palestine, Syria or Ukraine or wherever

Hmmm - I've been appalled for years. With good reason. Assumptions much. Rtft

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/03/2022 12:58

The British government were arseholes about accepting Syrian refugees.
Their policy was downright murderous for Afgans.
Turns out it's a shambolic shit storm for Ukrainians as well.

Most Mnetters have been very vocal in opposing the bullshit that is our government's response to refugees. I'm not ashamed to be British, but I am ashamed of our government.

Putin is a cunt and he looks like this Envy.
