Ashamed to be british

Despite the bombing of a maternity hospital by Putin.
Today we find out exactly what Ukrainians need to do to gain asylum in the UK.

  1. Create an online account - on the home office website & fill in a lengthy and detailed application form.
  2. Upload proof that their qualifying family member has permanent residence status in the UK - they suggest a copy of the home office vignette embedded in the passport
  3. Upload proof of residence in the UKraine for a full year
4.Provide and upload proof of familial relationship with the family member. Birth certificates & marriage certificates of all concerned. 5.Make sure all documents are translated into English before uploading 6.Book and attend an IN-PERON appointment at a home office visa application centre in Poland, Hungary, Romania or France. So that officials can take biometrics and copies of all documents already uploaded. The booking system for appointment frequently crashes & the next available appointment as of today is in two weeks time - at any of the venues
  1. Get a tuberculosis vaccination & certificate - have it translated & upload
8.wait at SAME address while home office workers in the UK assess. Be available for phone or zoom interview.

In a fucking war zone. I despair. I truly despair & despise this government with all my heart. Patel is a sociopath & Johnson an idiot.

I'm ashamed 😓

@Kanaloa

And as I posted above it’s easy to be lovely and big hearted and say ‘let’s welcome everyone, no paperwork necessary’ but nobody seems to have any idea of how this would work realistically.
No one is saying that, not even the Ukrainian ambassador. Most Ukrainians have passports and are women and children, the men are conscripted to fight.

We also have a sponsorship or family members scheme, so its not "everyone"

But can't we ditch the officious red tape? and ridiculous bio metric rubbish?
If Russians want to come here & poison us all, they can on a fake passport (i'm sure the FSB can easily make them up) and a 6mth tourist visa, our border force has never been a propblem for them before.

Kanaloa · 10/03/2022 21:52

@Thecatsatonthewalls

That’s exactly what op is saying. She said why can’t we just let everyone come and worry about paperwork when they’re all here.

Kanaloa · 10/03/2022 21:53

And when someone who has experience of bringing a family member here chipped in with interesting experience op’s (frankly pretty gross) reply to the people she’s so desperate to help was ‘off you pop dear.’ She knows better of course, she’s seen the daily mail.

LynetteScavo · 10/03/2022 22:00

@MiniCooper15

It's standard for refuges with brown or black skin. Haven't heard much complaints about this previously.
This

I get Ukraine feels close to home, and we can identifying more easily with Ukrainians than, say, Syrians. But these jump through hoops rules are nothing new. The average British person who is likely to vote Conservative isn't likely to want an influx of non-British people, even if they're from a war zone. So the rules are in place to keep British biers happy.

LynetteScavo · 10/03/2022 22:12

Well, yes.

roarfeckingroarr · 10/03/2022 22:14

@Kanaloa you assume I read the daily mail? Oh ffs no, except the side bar of shame occasionally. I work in politics, I get why people are more affected by what's going on now

When this is done and dusted, we'll prob see 15m + refugees coming out of Ukraine.
(No certainties but with a pop. of 44m, a 1/3rd leaving isn't unrealistic, 6m Syrians left out of 23m)

Every European country and many others will have to take 100s of 1000s, may as well get used to it, plan accordingly and act with compassion.

The op read the daily mail. I never said you did.

mommydragonn · 10/03/2022 23:22

What can I say ... Priti Patel is doing a fab job.... we might as well not bother.

mommydragonn · 10/03/2022 23:27

For those making comparisons and saying about why Ukrainian refugees mustn't be treated differently, In my personal opinion, Ukrainians are more likely to go back to rebuild their country if the war ended. They appear very proud of their country and we are constantly seeing in the News about them saying they will return.

Stop lying - it's boring. I don't & never have read the daily Mail.

I think the UK should take our fair share of refugees & cut the red tape. People in or fleeing war are dealing with trauma - they shouldn't have to deal with that also.

I quoted a BBC journalist that I heard on BBC radio, on discussing it with a family member - they had seen it on said journalist twitter. Quite where you're getting daily Mail chat from is beyond me. But like I say I don't read that

I do not read right wing hate filled comics masquerading as news. Don't do Fox News either.

But don't let that get in the way of the hard on you have for making up bs about me.

I've already received racist tropes on this page which hq removed.

Maybe lay off the lies pet.

Anyway. I welcome refugees, am ashamed to be british & despise this Tory gvmt & those who vote for them with a passion.

You can keep having a go @Kanaloa but frankly im bored with you.

And once again as you're hard of hearing. Someone said they have experience of family members leaving Ukraine . If that's true - great. Glad their personal experience has been peachy.
Not quite true for all refugees from Ukraine

( I never found that particular bafta winning journalist to be a liar & had no reason to doubt her & I know for a fact an easy peasy experience isn't typical for refugees particularly those of colour. I chose to believe a journalists research over anonymous anecdotes, my prerogative.

I found this mornings news about the maternity hospital hard to take having lost my little baby at 6 weeks old.

But you keep fibbing & nitpick. I notice your nitpicking didn't extend to condemning the racism directed at me early in thread.

You do you & I'll do me.

Exactly this
NatriumChloride · 11/03/2022 00:12

@roseky

This is and has been the process for migrants and refugees for years. It's appalling, slow, expensive, invasive - deliberately so. Anyone who has navigated the system will know how horrific it is. People only care now because these refugees are white.
This.
Kanaloa · 11/03/2022 00:27

I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. Clearly this is an issue that’s stirred up deep emotions for you but to be honest you’ve just been pretty aggressive on this thread and not too interested in hearing anything that isn’t ‘Britain is rubbish and why aren’t we doing xyz.’ Or even rational discussion about what plan you’d like to see put into place outside of throw the borders open and worry about later later.

Obviously I didn’t see the racist post from earlier because it was deleted so I can’t really comment because I literally have no idea what it even said.

Also it’s very patronising to call women ‘pet’ and ‘dear’ when they don’t agree with you. It’s intended to make you sound oh so calm and superior but it just makes you sound a bit nasty and patronising.

Kanaloa · 11/03/2022 00:29

Apologies if you didn’t read the daily mail though. The link I saw about Victoria Derbyshire talking about this was a daily mail one.

Kanaloa · 11/03/2022 00:31

I think the UK should take our fair share of refugees & cut the red tape. People in or fleeing war are dealing with trauma - they shouldn't have to deal with that also.

You’ve also not really explained how any of this will be organised or whether it will extend to all refugees from every country. Presumably it will be quite an operation to open the borders sans red tape to anyone who claims to be fleeing war and trauma since Ukraine is certainly not the only country that is.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/03/2022 00:39

@beachcitygirl, sorry your thread got derailed by folk who try to make out that
Support for Ukraine = Racism.

They obviously haven't been here long or have wee short memories.Hmm

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/03/2022 00:44

How do you know that the people coming as refugees are not Russian soldiers who have legged it?

Because they're women, children and old people!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/03/2022 01:17

OP I'm ashamed of and disgusted with this foul government and those who think like them.

However I'm not the kind to ever have said I was "proud" to be British anyway. "Fortunate" yes but why would I be proud? It's totally the luck of the draw that I was born here and not in Ukraine, Syria or Afghanistan.

People like to kid themselves that this country has always welcomed incomers, but as I pointed out on another thread even the Kindertransport children didn't get in for free. As well as sponsors to house them, a financial bond was required for each child, the equivalent of £3,500 today and no child was allowed in without one.

lllllllllll · 11/03/2022 03:47

OP: I’m ashamed to be British! Why aren’t we helping the Ukrainians more???!!!

Actual Ukrainian person: shares own experience.

OP: oh shut up dear, what do you know? Idiot.

This!

userxzfyjoot · 11/03/2022 04:07

@Riseholme

My nephews wife is white and a US citizen. My nephew made the decision to move to the US because he knew it would take years to get his wife into the UK. It’s not always about colour. Sometimes it’s as simple as the arrogant and archaic immigration system.
LOL
JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 11/03/2022 06:06

It would be madness to just let thousands of people in unchecked. I would prefer a system whereby we paid towards them staying in Poland. That would take financial pressure off of Poland and the refugees would be closer to home in order to return when it’s over. It would also reduce the risk of Russians and Ukrainian card carrying Neo-Nazis (yes they do exist) from coming here to destabilise our country.

sjxoxo · 11/03/2022 06:18

This is standard for any refugee and yes Ukraine is in a terrible terrible situation & we should offer generous help, but we should do / have done this for other nations also suffering conflict. Other nations have suffered terrible war and conflict and we have not had as much, if any, coverage. It’s a horrible, ugly truth that unconscious bias and racism still exists. x

...but your quite happy for Russian terrorists to attack targets in Poland Germany France etc etc?

You also don't seem to have any such concerns over letting in up to 2.8m HK Chinese who are NOT fleeing war and death - personally i think this is utter madness.

I am amazed you think this will be over quickly and people can return to rebuild.

BigWoollyJumpers · 11/03/2022 09:28

@Annoyedtoomuch

How are Poland and Germany etc doing it? They seem to have managed.
I think the big difference in Poland is that there are 1millin settled Ukranians already in Poland. It is widely reported that many of the early refugees went straight to friends or relatives. Those who had money, resources, and relatives and friends got out early and are already sorted.

Those recently fleeing are those most in need. They had nowhere to go, no contacts, no resources and left it to the very last moment to flee. These are the ones who need the most support.
