Admitted to hospital for covid but refused the vaccine

So it has just been on my local news that there are 19 people in hospitlal with covid and all of them had not taken up their offer of a vaccine.

This makes me angry, you refuse the vaccine but you'll accept hospital care, why?

You’re not serious, surely?

For the same reason that alcoholics, smokers, people with sports injuries and overweight people access the NHS. They are ill and need help. The fact that there may be an element of self inflictedness about it is irrelevant. And the Covid section is over there 👍>>>

Maybe they don’t feel the vaccine is safe

Given how often the guidelines change around one vaccine in particular it’s hardly surprising people are cautious

Obviously I have no idea why those individuals refused the vaccine but it's something that needs to be looked into as a matter of urgency and hopefully it is to see if there are different ways of reaching the cohorts of people who are putting themselves at health risk and potentially leading to the final restriction date being delayed

Because like everyone else in the country, they’re entitled to emergency health care when they need it.

Not everyone who is eligible for a vaccine is able to have one and not everyone wants one. Personally I think people who can have it but don't are a bit daft all thing considered however that is their right and forcing people of sound mind to accept treatment/vaccines they don't want is an ethical slippery slope.

I can understand your frustrations, however, we would be entering very scary territory if treatment was conditional upon being vaccinated.

Well, they'll be good headlines, might persuade others to rethink their stance on rejecting the jab.

They could have valid reasons. They deserve hosipital treatment as much as anyone else does.

But if they were simply relying on the majority of others to take their jab risk for them you can see why some will condemn them!

Vilifying people who have chosen not to take up the vaccine isn’t likely to lead to them changing their minds. Do you want the nhs to refuse to treat them? People are allowed to make bad health decisions.

What do you mean “why”? Surely you can tell the difference between a vaccine and hospital care, even if you totally disagree with their decision to not have the vaccine.

I’m pro vax, volunteered for the trials etc, but that doesn’t mean the concept of someone turning down a vaccine and still wanting treatment is beyond my understanding.

Would you actually prefer them left at home, potentially to die?

Those are generic reasons and would be valid if this was a country wide problem but is this issue very area specific

So I assume if a smoker gets Lung Cancer you expect them to accept they'll die and refuse treatment? If a car driver has an accident and is found to be at fault that he'll refuse to be cut free and just die in the middle of the road? What about broken bones from sports? Say nah, it'll set itself eventually, it's my own fault? A mother advised to have a C Sec for pre existing medical issues should say no, my choice, I'll push baby out or die trying?

I wonder if all the medical assistance you've received over your life has always been blame free?

I'm massively pro vaccine

But even I realise that some people CANT have it due to medical conditions, CANT have it due to domestic violence, CANT have it due to low IQ/learning difficulties, CANT have it due to pregnancy.

Plus it doesn't work on some people and they're going to get ill

Plus some people catch Covid before the vaccine takes effect

This is what the government want by the way. Look look look at these people who refused a vaccine rather than at our crappy border policy that let this variant get established in the first place before we were further through the vaccination programme.

I find it hard to believe a hospital would give out this information. 7 cases of the Indian variant was found where I live. They refused to say whether any of them had been vaccinated as they said it would breach patient confidentiality.

Bolton has 19 cases, six of which have had at least one vaccine. I think this must be where the op is taking about but has got the details wrong.

I’ve heard it in several radio shows that al but one person hadn’t had the vaccine. I think it’s helpful to know that A - would seem
If you have had the jab you are protected and B - motivates those who think they are invincible to get it done. Lots of people are worried over new variant as we don’t know

I do think that unvaccinated people should be admitted. However there is a difference in that people who choose to do extreme sports and get in accidents, or who smoke and get lung cancer, for example, are not endangering other vulnerable people in hospital, nor hospital workers.

There will be other patients with compromised immune systems or unable to be vaccinated, and there will be healthcare staff who may he vaccinated but in the unlucky percentage who still contract it, especially with the heavy viral load of caring for an ill person. The need for continued distancing or shutting down of hospital zones compromises the health of the many people who have been waiting on care and procedures for a year or more, due to covid-based delays.

It's not fair to others, it's not just about the ill person, and this is why group vaccination is so important, especially among vulnerable groups.

I heard similar on BBC news earlier today.
No vaccine for the stupid gene.

What about all the people who didn't stick to the rules and got covid, especially around Christmas? Should we not have treated them? Or any of the other examples previous posters have given? We live in a country where sick people get treated and that is something to be greatful for.
