Does anyone else really hate cannabis?

Greengang321 · 08/02/2020 00:39

I feel like it’s a really unpopular view at the moment with the age old come back that it’s natural and better than drinking.

But i just really hate it. I hate the smell, I’m not a fan of hanging around people who are high, I really hate the idea of people smoking it in and around my property.

When I met my partner he didn’t smoke it but now he does. Aibu for hating him smoking it?

If you hate it, don't use it. Only you can decide if it's important enough to end a relationship over, but I think hating him for it is a bit over the top.

Happy101 · 08/02/2020 00:44

I hate it too. I think there is this narrative that its natural, less dangerous than smoking etc.

But quite frankly every single person who i've met who smokes it on the regular is a bit of a bum, they do nothing but sit inside all day getting high and it just repulses me. I left an ex for that reason, he's spend all this money on the stuff, then moan about going out for dates or spending a penny with me. The smell lingers too, makes me sick.

KatyCarrCan · 08/02/2020 00:44

I couldn't be with someone who smoked it. It means they have a completely different value system to drugs, to the law, etc. Plus the people I know who smoke a lot have all suffered with their MH after they started smoking.

Shinycat · 08/02/2020 00:45

@Greengang321 YANBU, it's vile, it smells putrid, and the worst kind of people smoke it.

Shinycat · 08/02/2020 00:46

And they are under some bizarre illusion that it won't affect them. Idiots. As a pp said, it has a terrible effect on mental health.

Fieldofgreycorn · 08/02/2020 00:47

Does he talk absolute shite to you when he’s smoking it? A lot of them do.

Then there’s the daytime mood swings.

Sparklesocks · 08/02/2020 00:54

@Shinycat not sure that’s a fair generalisation, I have a friend who smokes it for pain management as she has severe MS.

PatellarTendonitis · 08/02/2020 00:56

No, I don't but if you do don't use it. I have nationality in a country where it's legal and it does me a lot of good for my insomnia without the grogginess the next day. I also used to smoke it whenever camping at altitude as it prevents you from developing Cheyne-Stokes breathing which can be really unpleasant and give you horrible dreams. I have never used skunk/hydro, though.

PatellarTendonitis · 08/02/2020 00:57

I agree, Sparkle. One of my sisters lives in a US state where it is legal and it has helped her lupus a lot, allowing her to come off stronger prescription drugs that had a lot of unpleasant side effects. Again, not street skunk, though.

Herbalteahippie · 08/02/2020 01:00

I fuckin love it. But it’s not for everyday and I make sure I’m well away from anyone else when I smoke it, im discreet and I respect that some people don’t like the smell. I’m sorry 😐

Onesailwait · 08/02/2020 01:02

It could never be unreasonable to dislike something l, if you dont like it don't smoke it. It is unreasonable to assume everyone who takes marijuana is a lazy bum. I have a very successful career as does my husband we smoke most evenings. Its legal where I live, just picked up some Thc capsules & some pre rolls on my way home from work. I'm off to have a beer & smoke a doobie. Happy friday

Herbalteahippie · 08/02/2020 01:02

@Greengang321 the worst people smoke it, do they? I’m a traumatised navy veteran and former NHS worker, I’ve served my country and community. I’m also autistic. If it wasn’t for weed I wouldn’t function; I smoke one joint every few days to calm me down. I hold down a job and a house. It’s ok really but not for people with issues.

Fieldofgreycorn · 08/02/2020 01:07

Fair enough if it helps medical issues.

DustyMaiden · 08/02/2020 01:09

I’ve never tried it, seen it or smelled it.

Boom45 · 08/02/2020 01:12

I quite like it. And I'm not a bum either. I'm in my 30s, busy mum of 2 young children with an interesting and varied job but I enjoy it now and again. If my DH really hated it and asked me (not told me) to quit I probably would but its something my friends and i have always done and its fun.

MashedSpud · 08/02/2020 01:14

It’s bad for mental health.

Imagine a road with all your hobbies and things you like to do on the sides of that road. Long term use of weed makes those hobbies drop off one by one because the person prefers to smoke weed.

Eventually self care starts dropping off too.

Marold · 08/02/2020 01:28

@MashedSpud

You could say the same about alcohol though. Either are (imo) fine in moderation but obviously a problem if it becomes a lifestyle.

springrollover · 08/02/2020 01:28

I use it for Pain Management too, allows me to function on a daily basis. Clears my brain fog & stops me stuttering & blanking over words.
I've got a far better quality of life, am able to do my hobbies as it releases my joints & muscles. I'd be in far too much pain & stuck in my head without it

managedmis · 08/02/2020 01:31

I just don't get the fuss about it. It's basically a stinky fag

ParkheadParadise · 08/02/2020 01:38

I fucking hate it.
My dd started out smoking cannabis.
3 yrs later she was injecting herself with Heroin.

It took over her life, and destroyed her. Our family was torn apart because of drugs. I can't believe any parent would happily watch their child smoke cannabis.

It took 3 attempts at rehab to finally get clean. She managed to turn her life around and was due to go back to university.
She left my house telling me she would see me tomorrow. That was the last time I would ever see her. She met her ex-partner on the way home, he was completely off his head on drugs.
He brutally murdered her, her injuries were so severe I never got to see her again.
She was 23
To say I hate drugs is an understatement.

Onesailwait · 08/02/2020 01:39

MashedSpud that is a very sweeping Statement and certainly not true for everybody. I have been using cannabis recreationally for around a 20 yrs. I have lots of hobbies. And a very active social life. I would generally consider myself to be a very happy and successful person. No mental health issues And no lack of Drive in my life.

goodwinter · 08/02/2020 01:45

I smoke weed sometimes. I have a happy, healthy, productive life. YANBU to not like it, but some of the judgements on this thread are kind of bonkers. I don't drink much at all, and I don't see how having a joint is really any different than a glass of wine.

goodwinter · 08/02/2020 01:47

@ParkheadParadise I am so sorry for what you went through, that's unimaginable.

PatellarTendonitis · 08/02/2020 02:03

I can't believe any parent would happily watch their child smoke cannabis.

I would, and I lost a child. Definitely not skunk but I think in places where it's legalised and regulated there's definitely scope for use and those who have addictive personalities will come to that no matter what. I have a child with HFA and ADHD and there's currently a study at UC-Berkeley IIRC for use of medical marijuana (pill form, I believe) to treat those who have not responded well to traditional treatments and I'm all for it.

I think it has medical uses definitely.

It's not a magic bullet but in some people it has positive effect. I mean, we dole out prescription meds to people with MH issues and some of them are already known to have awful side effects, this can be another tool in the toolbox.

PatellarTendonitis · 08/02/2020 02:20

Street skunk, though, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. But I used to grow it myself back in the day and smoke it and really don't see how that variety is any different from alcohol, tbh. I preferred it to alcohol and never felt inclined to do speed or coke or heroin. IMO it should be legalised and regulated the same way alcohol and tobacco are.
