Does anyone else really hate cannabis?

Greengang321 · 08/02/2020 00:39

I feel like it’s a really unpopular view at the moment with the age old come back that it’s natural and better than drinking.

But i just really hate it. I hate the smell, I’m not a fan of hanging around people who are high, I really hate the idea of people smoking it in and around my property.

When I met my partner he didn’t smoke it but now he does. Aibu for hating him smoking it?

Something to remember is that mental health professionals will come into the casualties of cannabis use, rather than those who smoke and live a productive happy life.

And maybe they have read the RCTs and meta analyses that demonstrate the link between Cannabis and mental health problems and the impact they do see is bad enough to make it not worth it for the people who survive it relatively scot free. If Alcohol weren't already legal, we'd feel the same way about that too.

Usemyname123 · 08/02/2020 18:41

I agree with it for medical use only.
I also hate the smell and think it's illegal for very good reason. I dated a guy who smoked it on a daily basis and I saw the effects it had on him. It makes people paranoid, lazy and overeaters (if smoked constantly) and I believe it has over psychological and physiological effects.
I was also very uncomfortable with having it in our house and it was one of the reasons why the relationship ended.

ALongHardWinter · 08/02/2020 19:15

It may be 'natural' but that certainly doesn't make it better. As for people saying it is better than drinking alcohol,it is as harmful to your lungs as cigarette smoking, you're more likely to be in a RTA if you've been smoking cannabis and it can increase your risk of heart disease or stroke,to name but a few of the downsides.

I don't think YABU OP. I hate the stuff too,I hate the sickly smell of it,it makes me gag. And it's not helped by the fact that nearly every other person in the area I live seems to be smoking it! Every day I walk past people who absolutely reek of it. Honesty, they think none-users are so naive. They think because we don't use it,we won't know what the smell is. There is a mens' barber shop on the parade of shops where I live. The smell of cannabis wafting out of this shop is almost enough to make you feel stoned. I know several local people have reported them to the police, but they just seem to turn a blind eye, even though I am pretty sure the owners of this shop are also dealing the stuff.

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/02/2020 19:40

It stinks and though it might be beneficial medically for some people, I personally hate being around cannabis smokers, not only for the smell.

river90 · 08/02/2020 19:42

I feel the same as you OP I hate my husband for smoking weed and it will 100% bring about an end to our marriage when I can afford to move out of our shared home. I hate it with a passion.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2020 20:24

But really, it is not the substance, is it? It is the spiritual/mental void that drives addiction.

You are right that there is a spiritual/mental void driving addiction.

That being said, pot causes certain specific issues once a habit is established, and it can exacerbate existing issues.

I am of the belief that all narcotics currently illegal should be legalised and their dispensing tightly controlled. The criminal activity that surrounds sale of illegal narcotics has been similar to the problems that happened under Prohibition, with no impact whatsoever on the appetite for narcotics.

Pot was recently made legal where I live. Sellers can sell with a licence, and growers can grow under licence too. I suspect there will be a massive rise in problems associated with pot use in a few years time because of the easy availability and normalising of pot - it's almost at the point now where it's considered a wonder drug with health-giving properties, a boost to the economy of the disadvantaged areas of the city because people will be able to grow it, and far superior to smoking tobacco.

My issue with the legalisation of pot is that its sale is not as controlled as it should be. There should be an attempt to present it in a medical setting; the current approach suggests to users and people considering using it that it is a recreational choice akin to moderate alcohol use.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2020 20:55

you're more likely to be in a RTA if you've been smoking cannabis

It worries me that people are driving under the influence, and smoking in their cars as they drive. The smell is so strong that you can easily identify which cars are occupied by someone smoking even with windows rolled up.

OldHarrysGameboy · 08/02/2020 21:00

I don't know why everyone keeps saying that cannabis now is stronger than it used to be. Skunk has been around for well over twenty years. That's a generation.

cowboy · 08/02/2020 21:04

I'm not a smoker but I don't hate it. I agree it is very strong smelling but you seem to have a very blinkered view. It has proven benefits for lots of medical issues and in my view is better than pumping your body full of mass produced chemicals with all sorts of awful side effects.

cowboy · 08/02/2020 21:06

@mashedspud - that's a massively sweeping generalisation. I know lots of people who are regular smokers and their 'self-care' and participation in hobbies is absolutely fine and dandy.

Deckthehallswithlotsofcake · 08/02/2020 21:08

People who use it always say it makes them mellow, makes them chill out, but every single person I have known who have smoked weed, has become very aggressive for up to 6 days after smoking it, so that is such a load of bullshit! I really don't believe that it is just some sort of statistical coincidence that it made all of them aggressive.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 08/02/2020 21:11

You're not being unfair at all. It stinks, and whether people want to admit it or not it is a gateway drug

CSIblonde · 08/02/2020 21:13

I hate the smell, it makes me nauseous & I associate it with a never grown up ethos tbh as those are the sort of people I've met who smoke it. I've walked out of flat viewings as the communal hall reeked of weed, always from a flat that has non working tenants. I didn't want my clothes reeking like a girl at work whose housemates smoked it:it got her a lot of disapproval behind her back from managers etc.

OldHarrysGameboy

It absolutely is more potent.

The primary problem with the current available cannabis in dispensaries in Colorado is that the THC content is not like it used to be. Prior to the 1990s it was less than 2%. In the 1990s it grew to 4%, and between 1995 and 2015 there has been a 212% increase in THC content in the marijuana flower. In 2017 the most popular strains found in dispensaries in Colorado had a range of THC content from 17–28% such as found in the popular strain named “Girl Scout Cookie.”2 Sadly these plants producing high levels of THC are incapable of producing much CBD, the protective component of the plant so these strains have minimal CBD. For example the Girl Scout Cookie strain has only 0.09–0.2% CBD.

The flower or leaves that are generally smoked or vaped are only one formulation. We now have concentrated THC products such as oil, shatter, dab, and edibles that have been able to get the THC concentration upwards of 95%.

StrawberryTot · 08/02/2020 21:21

I don’t think you are being unreasonable to hate it when your partner smokes it because you have a dislike, although i feel it’s a little extreme to hate him.

I personally don’t have an issue, for me it helped my dad massively when he broke his hip, he struggled with medication so would smoke or we would bake it in cakes for him.

Plus I have a lot of family and friends that smoke it socially, I myself am an ex smoker, so now I don’t allow smoking in my house but I don’t mind people stood at the back door.

PixieDustt · 08/02/2020 21:25

Yes! It's disgusting. The smell is awful.
A few houses down now rent their home I think it's a house share and 2 of them smoke it all day long it seems! You walk past the house and it's all you can say. They stand outside the front doing it aswell Angry

PapayaCoconut · 08/02/2020 21:30

@ProclivitiesMcManus

It's a well known fact that alcohol is a very effective painkiller. That's why people often injure themselves while drunk and only realise the next day. Have you never seen an old movie where they have to amputate some poor guy's leg without anaesthesia and instead he gets to swig from a bottle of booze?

OldHarrysGameboy · 08/02/2020 21:31

Oh ok @mathanxiety. Possibly my view is skewed by living in Brixton 20 years ago where high potency skunk was pretty normal. It was known even then by us who lived there that it made people aggressive because they became so disinhibited. Admittedly not the focused spikes of aggression that you got from the crackheads nearby, but certainly belligerent, loose cannon type of behaviour, sort of pathetic messed up punchiness and low level crime for income purposes due to being too fucked to hold down a job.

Happy101 · 08/02/2020 22:09

I'd just like to add when i mentioned people are bums who smoke it, i'm talking about the ones who smoke all the time. The occasional smoke in the garden is very different to your whole life being dictated by the thing.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2020 22:10

That is exactly what I have observed in a neighbourhood not far from where I live, OldHarrysGameboy (a neighbourhood a lot like Brixton in many respects actually).

I think a lot of people around here - a UMC area - have fond memories (though probably hazy) of pot from the 60s or 70s or even the 80s and can't see what is literally under their noses. Chickens will come home to roost big time in a few years though, when their children start having the problems associated with massively higher potency pot.

DimplesToadfoot · 09/02/2020 16:16

@Firefretted

Believe me the SS really do not care, As I said it's my word against theirs and report anonymously you're having a laugh, The SS didn't care when their mother left school at 13 to stay home and get drugged up and drunk with her mother and they don't care about this younger generation either!

I've had enough of my windows being put through, pets killed, fences torn up, running the gauntlet every time I leave the house for whether I'm spat on or not. Not so long ago they threw a pair of kitchen scissors at me using such force the scissors are still embedded in my fence. I stopped caring about this family a long time ago, there is absolutely no point in reporting them to anyone, no one ever cares. Simple as!

P.s. I'm actually under a warning that if I report them to anyone again, I'll be done for harassment, as far as the police are concerned I'm just a nosey neighbour, I was watching out for my daughter who was in their house keeping the youngsters out of harm's way while the family were fighting in the street. My landlord will arrange mediation so "I can ask them nicely to stop spitting on me" Other than my shitty neighbours I like living here..

TheUser420 · 09/02/2020 16:25

Meanwhile, it seems you can get a degree in Cannabis, Biology and Chemistry from Colorado University. Hardly a back street outfit Grin

NotProudOfMyself · 09/02/2020 16:29

Can someone tell me what it smells like? I keep getting a whiff of something when out and a out.. On buses.. People.. It's like a sour green beer kind of smell.. I think it's cannabis (and if so it's truly vile).. But I'm never sure.

TheUser420 · 09/02/2020 16:58

Can someone tell me what it smells like?

Smell is possibly the most subjective sense of all Grin. That said, if it's growing, it's a sweet, floral scent. ("Skunk" comes from the strength of the smell, not the actual scent). Once harvested it will alternate between that sweet smell and a quite dank greeny smell. When dried and cured there's not much smell at all to the actual buds.

When smoked it's a more resinous incensey type smell. Going back to the 80s patchouli oil would have been your best comparison, but since then breeding has led to quite a range of smells and tastes. The class of compounds that make up the smell are "terpenes", and they are pretty much at the bottom of most botanical scents; nice and nasty.

(All of that applies to properly grown and cured cannabis. If you are talking about some shit bought on the streets as this most of thread probably is, then all bets are off. Christ alone knows what muck gets mixed in to bulk out the weight.)

Personally I cannot stand the whiff of Honeysuckle. It's quite gag-inducing. Or Lily of the Valley. Which seems to fill the air near me in summer.

Patroclus · 09/02/2020 17:21

Eactly right there, NotProud. Open a bottle of Grolsch (cant be arsed to look up spelling) holding it a bit away from you. That sickly sweet smell you get is nearly identical to weed.
