Does anyone else really hate cannabis?

I feel like it’s a really unpopular view at the moment with the age old come back that it’s natural and better than drinking.

But i just really hate it. I hate the smell, I’m not a fan of hanging around people who are high, I really hate the idea of people smoking it in and around my property.

When I met my partner he didn’t smoke it but now he does. Aibu for hating him smoking it?

I’ve never ‘used’ it (except for a couple of late-teen experimental puffs on a joint once) and nor has dh.

But we know a good handful of people we used to socialise with (all men) who’ve regularly smoked it since teens so 15-20 years now.

Without exception they’re all pretty fucked up now. On the surface they seem ok with jobs, life etc...but they ALL have a variety of debilitating mental health and/or alcohol problems.

These were just ‘normal’ blokes in their late teens when we got to know them. Now one is an alcoholic, one has serious depression and bordering alcoholic, one can’t hold a job down and has severe anxiety, another with depression and ocd...and all still daily users.

In my personal experience it fucks you up and opens the gateway wide to a variety of other substance abuse and mental health problems.

dray9925 · 08/02/2020 08:24

I don't like it at all I was friends with a woman that smoked it regularly and I couldn't deal with it anymore (that and many other things) she'd pop out for a joint and when she came back I couldn't talk to her and she couldn't look at me straight but apparently she was fine to take care of her kids?
I tried it once in my teens hated it and never had it again

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/02/2020 08:29

I see a lot of psychotic adolescents in my work because of it so yeah, i guess i'm not it's biggest fan.

Lightlyfebreezed · 08/02/2020 08:30

I see that it's beneficial for medical reasons, but then so is lithium, and nobody uses that as a reason to argue everyone should be taking lithium.

There's always "I'm a married lawyer mum of 2 and I smoke it everyday and I am fine" contingent on MN, but in RL everyone I know who smokes it regularly is basically operating at a lower level than they otherwise would be, in all areas of life. They are not people I wish to emulate

Inforthelonghaul · 08/02/2020 08:30

I loathe it. It stinks to high heaven and imo anyone who thinks they do it and it doesn’t affect them in any way is kidding themselves and I would definitely think less of someone if I knew they used it regularly (unless genuinely medical).

Aragog · 08/02/2020 08:38

I've never used it and never wood.
If my Dh suddenly started smoking it I'd be concerned and it wouldn't be acceptable to me. There'd be serious conversations and it may well cause the relationship to end eventually if it continued I guess, as it's not something I could deal with. Mind I'd feel similar to normal smoking in a partner, let alone an illegal substance.

I also hate the smell. I went to a concert a couple of summers back and it was everywhere. By the end of the concert my head felt really heavy and woozy. Not pleasant at all. And it often turns the users into very annoying people to be around.

Motacilla · 08/02/2020 08:40

I would be happier if it were legal and supply chains were regulated to remove the significant ethical problems currently involved. I'd also want clear evidence based rules about how much is allowed in your system to drive and strict penalties for breaching that. The only time it really bothers me now is when I am driving behind a car from which I can smell it so strongly it is clear the driver is using directly or indirectly.

It stinks so I wouldn't want to be in an intimate relationship with a weed smoker but that's the same as any smoker really.

Aragog · 08/02/2020 08:41

Medical use from licensed premises where legal is very different to buying cannabis off the streets in the uk. Not really comparable in the same way.

The fact is that in the uk there is no legal way to purchase it. Therefore even when my pain is severe I don't self medicate with cannabis. It goes against my view of the law etc.

XPQF · 08/02/2020 08:49

I'm not a fan, which sucks because I have MS.

kizkiz · 08/02/2020 08:50

I don't think cannabis causes mental health issues per se, but if a regular/heavy user has a latent tendency towards such it will bring it out.
I see this a lot at work, and one of my best friends had issues.
The other factor is where it comes from in the UK. Hardly any imported these days. Its all grown in cannabis factories. 99% of these fund serious organised crime.
It may sound daily mail, but anyone buying weed from a dealer is just helping to fuel the carnage on our streets

ooopsupsideyourhead · 08/02/2020 08:51

I don’t like it. I’ve never smoked it through choice but as a teenager living at home with two of my brothers who were heavy smokers there were times I was exposed to it - I always got a huge headache. I also don’t like the smell - I find it worse than cigarettes (and I don’t like those either!), it really catches in my nostrils. Feels like I can smell it for days.

Both of those brothers developed significant mental health problems - one has crippling anxiety that has left him largely unemployed and unemployable. He no longer smokes because after a lot of use it also started to induced psychosis. The other brother also no longer smokes because he developed schizophrenia and killed himself.

“Weed is just a bit of fun and doesn’t do harm” my arse.

Foslady · 08/02/2020 08:51

After seeing how it has affected a friends family, no, not a fan at all

Trafalger · 08/02/2020 08:52

I hate it. Our downstairs neighbour smokes it every single day and she is the stereotype of a weed smoker. Lazy, layabout, rubbish mum who abandons her child on anyone who will have her and also smokes it around her child.

Our flat stinks to high heaven from it that we have to have the windows open all the time. Her daughter stinks of weed when she walks past you and she is only 10 ish. SS and the police do not care in the slightest.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/02/2020 08:54

A lot of research has shown Cannabis to have a causal link with Psychosis.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2020 08:55

YANBU. It stinks. It's been legal where I live since 1 January this year, but for the last two years you would be forgiven for thinking that nobody was enforcing the law.

However, better than illegal sales and all the problems that causes. My particular municipality has a dispensary and the local admin levies a 3% sales tax.

Best would be none at all, and nothing else either.

CurseOfCurves89 · 08/02/2020 08:55

Hate it!!
My ex used to smoke it all the time and it turned him into a totally useless lump (not that he was particularly useful before it tbf)
Mostly it's the smell though. We moved house last year and discovered the neighbours smoke it both inside and outside, so the smell comes either comes through the wall into my kitchen or in through the window 😣
Do people smoking it ever notice how strong it smells?

DdraigGoch · 08/02/2020 08:59

The smell of the stuff makes me feel nauseous.

My dd got up ( at this bloody hour) to smoke it
And people say it's not addictive...

Blueuggboots · 08/02/2020 09:02

Yep. Detest it. Hate the smell, hate how it turns people into mindless zombies (or maybe just pushes this character trait to the forefront?).
I hate how people make excuses for it.

Mummadeeze · 08/02/2020 09:03

Repulses me too. I took lots of other drugs when young but never weed as I didn’t like what it did to others around me. And it stinks. And I hate smoking in general as well. Really really hope my DD never tries it.

mumu54 · 08/02/2020 09:05

I despise the stuff. My daughter was using it regularly for several years and she became psychotic. Her mental health is still affected after at least 10 years of not using.
It should be avoided at all costs and NOT decriminalised.

jimmyjab · 08/02/2020 09:05

I love it. It helps with my migraines. Don't agree with some of these generalisations that all bud smokers are lazy or crazy. Plenty of people smoke it and have successful careers and happy families.

I also think if it helps people with pain then its a better alternative to cocodamol or morphine.

I know a few people addicted to cocodamol, it really messes with their bodies and it's a nightmare to wean off it. Yet drs readily prescribe it for anything!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/02/2020 09:07

I hate all illegal drugs and it would be a deal breaker for me so I wouldn’t date or befriend anyone who used them and would go NC if they started to use.

Neither would I date a smoker or frequent drinker though either as my tolerance levels for those habits isn’t much more.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/02/2020 09:07

It has been proved to cause psychosis in certain people

It stinks and it's the reason I haven't been able to use my back garden for 4/5 years my neighbour has decided to smoke it his kids smoke it all by my garden they stare swear and smoke me and the kids stay in with the back curtains shut

My friend and her hubby smoke they do other drugs now too he batters her in front of the children and then drugs her up to stay with him yes she stinks yes the kids stink

ToastyFingers · 08/02/2020 09:11

Meh, having seen the difference between long term alcoholics and long term cannabis users, I really can't get my knickers in a twist about.

It isn't good for some people, some heavy users suffer with poor mental health and for some it exacerbates pre-existing or dormant conditions.

Also, for most people, it is, in moderation totally harmless. I have enjoyed the odd joint over the years. It eases the joint and nerve pain I have daily and helps me sleep if I've been working late. Having seen the devastating side effects of people prescribed opioids long term, versus the effects of long term cannabis use, I'd choose weed any day.

mollypuss1 · 08/02/2020 09:12

I hate the ‘it’s no worse than alcohol’ comment often used by people who smoke it around others. If I’m with someone drinking a glass of wine it has no effect on me, if I’m in a room with someone smoking weed then the passive smoke does have an effect on me. Weed and alcohol may not affect the person taking either any differently (In their opinion) but it certainly does affect those with them who don’t want to breath in their passive smoke (which fucking stinks aswell). If you wanna smoke it on your own then knock yourself out but if you are outside or around others who don’t smoke it then have some respect for the fact they don’t want to breath in your stinking drugs.
