Does anyone else really hate cannabis?

Greengang321 · 08/02/2020 00:39

I feel like it’s a really unpopular view at the moment with the age old come back that it’s natural and better than drinking.

But i just really hate it. I hate the smell, I’m not a fan of hanging around people who are high, I really hate the idea of people smoking it in and around my property.

When I met my partner he didn’t smoke it but now he does. Aibu for hating him smoking it?

Terraced house dweller. Every single night the smell of skunk permeates the top floor landing. It's not the end of the world but I really hate it and cannot figure out where it is coming from. Rooftop smoker, I guess?

I used to use weed as an undergrad but the last couple of times I had it, it was really potent stuff that made me so paranoid I thought I would never come back to myself.

I have also had family members whose MH problems were exacerbated by their abuse of cannabis. Frightening to watch professionals' lives spiral to shit.

But really, it is not the substance, is it? It is the spiritual/mental void that drives addiction. I became dependent on alcohol in my 30s and just am grateful and lucky that the health repercussions of alcohol abuse forced me to get help.

Sickandscared · 08/02/2020 10:40

Grass may be better than Alcohol!

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 08/02/2020 10:46

I hate hanging around with pot heads, in my experience they usually lack drive, are lazy and have slightly dirty houses

Really? Back when I was a "pothead" my house was always pristine! I used to put some good music on and get into a groove of deepcleaning/organising. A lot of my pot head friends were the same. I haven't touched the stuff in years, but even now my DH sometimes jokes that the house could use a "stoner" clean.

Mummyzzz044 · 08/02/2020 10:52

My stomach went reading your post... the thought of it. The smell Envy. Makes me sick. It's now the normal thing to do.

Sickandscared · 08/02/2020 10:54

@HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely you will notice I said 'in my experience'

YappityYapYap · 08/02/2020 10:57

I don't know a single weed smoker (someone that smokes it heavily, not recreationally) that holds down a job and doesn't have mental health issues.

I know some people that smoke it at the weekend or now and then and they seem to hold down jobs and lead pretty normal lives.

I don't smoke it but I think it's like everything else. Now and then is fine, daily/heavily is not.

BearFoxBear · 08/02/2020 11:01

The worst people must then include me - I run a major function for a global company. I am also a charity board member and run a volunteer community for women and minorities to help them get into my career.

I smoke occasionally, in my garden, normally alone. I couldn't give a toss about some of the foamy mouthed daily mail reader nonsense on this thread.

Ps if your child is a lazy, morning weed smoking layabout, maybe consider what part your parenting had to play in it before tarring everyone with the same brush.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 08/02/2020 11:01

I have no issue with it. I’m firmly in the camp of people who believe it does less harm than alcohol.

Yes it can be a gateway drug, but that’s a choice. The majority of people I knew at school smoked it at some point and as far as I’m aware only one person, out of our whole year of over 200 kids, became a heroine addict. Most of us, even those of us who did try out some class A drugs along the way, lead productive adult lives and are not drug addicts.

I still smoke it from time to time and it’s so much less harmful than alcohol, you’re so much more in control of your actions. When I think of some of the alcohol related scrapes I got myself into as a youngster, I just cringe 🙈. I can 100% say I would not have got into any of the situations if I had been smoking weed rather than drinking.

BentNeckLady · 08/02/2020 11:04

Weed smokers stink. I spend a lot of my working life in social housing blocks of flats and you can smell a weed smokers flat as soon as you get in the same landing. It’s rank.

cologne4711 · 08/02/2020 11:06

I don't understand why anyone would smoke - whether cannabis or tobacco or vape. It's bad for your health, stinks and is bad for your skin too, so those who smoke look 50 when they're 30.

BUT all the angst over medical cannabis confuses me completely. I read websites online which claim it's the same as recreational cannabis but I've seen a BBC programme where the growers said it was a different strain of the same species. So if It's a different plant and with very different properties I just don't get why the UK government has been so slow and reluctant to clear it eg for use for epilepsy or Parkinsons. Even though it's now allowed on the NHS consultants are reluctant to prescribe it and you still have people selling their houses to pay for the child's private prescriptions.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 08/02/2020 11:12

I hate the smell of it, it makes me feel sick. Tried it as a student but it made me feel hideously depressed and I came to the conclusion that it’s not for me.

Great for those that it helps with pain, and other medical issues, but I do not think it’s a harmless substance. As with alcohol, it has to be used with care and restraint. Both these substances can ruin lives.

GladAllOver · 08/02/2020 11:14

Perhaps I move in the wrong circles, but the people I meet smoking it all seem to be losers.
But then I know some very successful people who are cokeheads.
Personally I prefer to avoid both.

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/02/2020 11:16

I used to smoke it a lot, but then something happened in my life (unrelated to smoking) and I didn't like the feeling anymore as I felt vulnerable.

I don't hate it , I don't mind the smell of it, I don't mind others using it around me.

OldHarrysGameboy · 08/02/2020 11:16

I can't stand it and think people who smoke it regularly are deluded bores. I also really hate the smell.

It's interesting that pretty much every mental health professional i know reports that psychological damage is far more common than popular perception, and not just from heavy use which I think we all know is harmful.

I do wish it were legalised just so that it could be properly controlled. The current blind eye policy effectively means that it is pretty much legal with very few restrictions on use. At least if it were brought within the law we'd be able to say where people should and shouldn't smoke it.

I think all drugs should be legalised though, both to control use and quality and also to take sales of highly profitable goods away from murderers and traffickers. Supplier countries are destroyed by this trade and people's lives would be transformed if what they produced was regulated by international trade agreements. For everyone else, their lives would continue as normal, mostly - I mean, I don't take drugs but not because they're illegal; it's because I've got to earn money and look after my kids etc and I can't do that properly if I'm high.

So I think that legalising it and other drugs would have many benefits and few drawbacks.

I do agree that it's filthy stuff though. I wouldn't want to live with a toker. They are generally very dull.

ProclivitiesMcManus · 08/02/2020 11:17

Personally I like it - relaxing, and fairly easy to obtain.

KittenVsBox · 08/02/2020 11:21

I would fully support medicinal canabis, properly controlled and distributed.

I fully believe access to widely varying (and doped?) Cannabis contributed to my brothers mental psychosis and eventual suicide, and would love to see it removed completly from the street.

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/02/2020 11:21

Plus I don't think cannabis is a gateway drug however alcohol is.

Especially for alcoholics , vulnerable, homeless ones they usually turn to hard drugs.
I've never known a person who smokes weed go "Mm that's nice I might try some heroin".

maddy68 · 08/02/2020 11:25

I love the smell. My neighbours smoke it and I honestly love it. Plus the fact I much prefer living next to stoners than noisy drunks

Dramaofallama · 08/02/2020 11:32

I'm on the fence about it.

I work within the care sector and have seen some people use it for pain management (MS, MND ect) and it has helped them alot in coping.

But I have also worked within the mental health sector and seen the effects it has had there. Especially the heavy users who had extreme psychotic episodes from using it but believed cannabis was the only cure.

I personally wouldnt go there, just because as stated above, it can have severe effects on a persons mental health but I can understand why a person in chronic pain would take the risk.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 08/02/2020 11:39

Can't bear it...neither the smell nor the effect it has on people. I would not want to be with anyone who was using it and would be very vocal with my opinion...kind of think if you need that stuff to be happy you have got bigger issues going on.

kenandbarbie · 08/02/2020 11:42

I don't like it but I don't like regular smoking either. If other people want to do it that's up to them. I wouldn't date a smoker cannabis or tobacco.

Rejoin2020 · 08/02/2020 11:43

OP, it's up to you. If you hate the smell and hate the way it affects your partner, a serious talk on the subject with a possible break up is well justified. YABU to hate him for it though.

A PP said: It's interesting that pretty much every mental health professional i know reports that psychological damage is far more common than popular perception, and not just from heavy use which I think we all know is harmful.

Something to remember is that mental health professionals will come into the casualties of cannabis use, rather than those who smoke and live a productive happy life.

I come from a background of being a heavy cannabis smoker in my teens and early twenties. I stopped when I realised I had become addicted to the tobacco in the joints. I'd be wanting a smoke when actually I didn't want to be stoned. I never got on with bongs and bowls and other paraphernalia.

Now, I'm at a stage in my life where I hate being out of control. No alcohol, anything.

Someone else also mentioned the reasons for the banning of cannabis. The original campaigning was very racist. Have a look at www.businessinsider.com/racist-origins-marijuana-prohibition-legalization-2018-2?r=US&IR=T

RedWine123 · 08/02/2020 11:43

@Shinycat bit of a generalisation that.

Natsku · 08/02/2020 12:24

I used to be quite for it until I saw the impact it had on my ex's mental health. I appreciate it does have its medical uses in some contexts, and light recreational use doesn't cause harm for most people, but for some people it can really make pre-existing mental health conditions much much worse.

stopgap · 08/02/2020 12:41

It’s my savior, truly. I live in the US, use a tincture for insomnia, and I have zero side effects.

I absolutely hate alcohol and give that a wide berth for its masses of side effects, even after one drink.
