Does anyone else really hate cannabis?

Greengang321 · 08/02/2020 00:39

I feel like it’s a really unpopular view at the moment with the age old come back that it’s natural and better than drinking.

But i just really hate it. I hate the smell, I’m not a fan of hanging around people who are high, I really hate the idea of people smoking it in and around my property.

When I met my partner he didn’t smoke it but now he does. Aibu for hating him smoking it?

It's crazy reading this thread and seeing how many people dislike it. Most of the people I know have smoked it or generally just don't have a problem with it. All of these being high functioning, working people. I know many people that use it medicinally, and some it even helps with their mental health.

Don't get me wrong I've know of a few people to go a bad way off it but I believe if it is was medicinalised and regulated it wouldn't be an issue. It totally depends on the person but the weed people buy off the streets is far too strong.

Personally, I'd much rather my son come home stoned than drunk. Most stoners will go out of their way to smoke somewhere quiet and obscure, will keep themselves to themselves and just chill out. Drunk people can be very disruptive. Also there have been no deaths linked to marijuana but alcohol kills thousands of people each year. I get the smell can be annoying to a none smoker, but not half as annoying as if they were having a wild raging house party full of drunken twats.

Re: alcohol vs cannabis. I buy alcohol from a shop, not a drug dealer. My local cider is not the result of people/sex trafficking/violence/knife crime/gun violence.
I also know what's in my bottle or cider, it hasnt been cut with potential deadly substances, like the recent batch of mdma in Essex that killed 2 teenagers.

The people on this thread saying it has no impact remind me of the “my aunt smoked a pack a day and lived to a 100” or “I’m a sex worker and it is so empowering” people.

Everyone I know who uses is affected. Some devastatingly. Some not so devastating unless you knew them really, really well beforehand. Then you can see how weed has blunted everything that makes them them. It can be quite subtle but it’s there. And those people would come straight onto this thread saying that they are functional and it hasn’t affected them at all. But it has. They just haven’t noticed the blunting of who they are.

Insaneinthemembury · 08/02/2020 09:22

It's all anecdotal this thread. My experience is everyone I know that smokes weed is lazy. They care deeply about their weed and not work.
They slur their words even when sober through prolonged use. One of them doesnt blink properly anymore.
One had psychosis and paranoia and all had trouble with other drugs at one stage
I dont know anyone who has an alcohol problem in this way.

Hellocanyouclapyourhands · 08/02/2020 09:32

I wouldn’t have an issue with it for medicinal purposes but I do really hate the smell.

I visited Amsterdam and it was just so stinky!

I do mainly know wasters on it and I’d hate for it to be legalised for them but for people with a genuine need it should be acceptable for them to take

slipperywhensparticus · 08/02/2020 09:34

I know alcoholics too alcohol has been shown to benefit in small doses but how do you police that 🤷‍♀️

Porcupineinwaiting · 08/02/2020 09:44

I hate it.

It destroyed my (natal) family, apart from which I've never met anyone who uses it regularly who wasnt a total, self- involved arsehole.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 08/02/2020 09:46

I disagree with the narrative that it's a "safer" substance to use. At work I see lots of people who have developed severe and enduring psychotic illnesses through cannabis use, to the extend that stopping using doesn't ameliorate the illness, but I'm aware that's not the typical experience. Far more problematic is that pretty much everyone I know socially whose habit is more than the occasional spliff at parties becomes psychologically dependent on it, and smoking tends to dominate their leisure time.

Locally, unless you're growing your own, all that's available is the super-strength skunk, which is just not in the same ball park as what used to get passed round at parties when I were a lass .

TheGirlWithAPrince · 08/02/2020 09:47

I couldn't date someone who smoked it, j don't mind cannabis in general but the smell makes me feel really sick, i had a neighbor who smokes it and everytime I left my flat I would have to run

FizzyIce · 08/02/2020 09:49

I hate it too.
Absolutely bloody stinks and it’s everywhere now including when I take my dd to theme parks !
Really looking forward to it being legalised so it can be smoked absolutely everywhere .. 👍🏻

MorrisZapp · 08/02/2020 09:54

How much does it cost in the UK? My colleague smokes it every night and he admits to smoking it while driving. I've often wondered how much this habit costs him.

WetFlannel · 08/02/2020 09:58

I used to love it. I was a prolific weed smoker for over ten years. Until it seriously affected my brain.

Now I hate it, but that's a personal thing. I wouldn't judge someone else for their preferences, I mean how could I?

WhatKatyDidNot · 08/02/2020 09:58

It does seem to smell more than it used to. Or perhaps people don't tend to use so much patchouli oil to disguise it these days?

I've always been pro-legalisation for cannabis even though I don't use it myself but have been hardening somewhat over recent years. It's not the same animal today as it was years ago. Here's an article from a mental health nurse talking about psychosis risks:

unherd.com/2019/11/ive-seen-what-cannabis-can-do-we-musnt-legalise-it/

Additionally - I'll dig out the studies if anyone needs them - but I've recently found out that road deaths have increased in almost every jurisdiction that has legalised cannabis. So that is also something to consider.

On the other hand, use is so widespread and the police have no resources to deal with it - what is the point of law that is universally flouted?

Crinklesmile · 08/02/2020 10:01

Not a fan of the smell. Like an occasional smoke or something edible, works wonders for nerve and disk pain.
What works for me won't work for all. It's not for everyone. My partner smokes more than me, mainly for enjoyment but it definitely doesn't veg him out, if anything it organises his thoughts and gives him some clarity.
I haven't tried anything else, never felt the need.
Some very eyeopening generalisations on here tho I agree, it's not suitable for all it terms of mental health etc

Verily1 · 08/02/2020 10:01

It annoyed me when people conflate a discussion about recreational use and medicinal use.

Heroin is widely used in the nhs medicinally but no one would advocate its recreational use!

Cannabis is dangerous, it causes psychosis, depression, anxiety, phobias, self neglect, debt and financial problems, relationship problems and is a gateway to class a drugs.

People who think they are doing no harm are as clue less as the heavy drinkers who think their habit is ok until they have liver failure aged 50.

ooopsupsideyourhead · 08/02/2020 10:03

@MorrisZapp

Well. It’s probably going to cost him his license as a minimum. Possibly his life too. I hope he doesn’t take anyone else’s with him. Selfish bastard.

Love51 · 08/02/2020 10:05

I don't mind the smell, it's nicer than shop bought cigarettes. Even vaping stinks worse than weed! But it does destroy people's mental health. Not everyone's, but enough to warrant it being illegal for recreational use. Medical use is totally different (like most drugs - zopiclone or diazapam).
I do think that someone getting into drugs is a perfectly valid reason to end your relationship. (Although I'm not sure you need to justify ending a relationship, you don't have to stay together forever if you don't want to!)

PhilCornwall1 · 08/02/2020 10:09

Don't like it and don't want to be around people who smoke it.

I suffer with severe pain, due to Rheumatoid Arthritis and someone said to me I should try it. No thanks mate, I'd rather live with the pain and my current medication thanks.

Madein1995 · 08/02/2020 10:09

Yes, I absolutely do. I work with offenders, many of whom are trying to make really positive changes in their lives - and its the weed that let's them down.

Some have reported its the money side of things - it costs a lot, and then they need to offend to get money. Others say it makes them angry. Some say it makes them unmotivated or lazy and misses appointments. Others say it affects their mental health. Others say the psychological withdrawal is horrid, that even 6montbs clean they smell it and get cravings. For others it's the company they keep when they smoke.
There is nothing more sad than seeing someone who last week was so proud he'd been absitent for months and determined never to smoke again and vehemently against it - to start smoking again. Worse though is that he believes his own bull - namely that he can control it.

Cannabis is a drug like any other. Just because alcohol has more reported deaths doesn't negate the harm of cannabis. How many deaths caused by mh have been excelerated by cannabis? I'm an addict (opiates, never smoked) and many of my na friends started on weed. One was clean for 9 years, had a spliff and then went back out on a weed, crack and heroin binge for 5 years.

Vulpine · 08/02/2020 10:13

Im not a fan myself but i know some very successful people who smoke it

TSSDNCOP · 08/02/2020 10:17

Tried it and didn’t get the love. I loathe the smell and I really dislike that more and more I smell it in the street. At our station you walk through clouds of the shit anytime after 4:30 which I think is disgusting for the school kids getting trains home.

If you have to do it, do it home, there’s a good drug user.

malificent7 · 08/02/2020 10:22

I hate it too op and what i hate even more is this notion that it's a ' cool' hippy drug. I find conspiracy theorists deluded bores and it seems to give rise to this thinking. No...it's not illegal as the government dosn't want humanity to relax and reach spiritual actualisation or nirvana, it's not illegal to protect big pharma from loosing profit....it's illegal as it destroys some lives .
I am not against it for pain relief though...i think if someone is in enough pain that they need weed then it's useful but for myself...i prefer ibuprofen .

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 08/02/2020 10:22

Yanbu to hate your partner smoking it. We are allowed to have likes and dislikes of this nature, and you don't have to share your home/life with someone who does something unnecessary that you hate.

Personally I want to see it legalised. I'm fed up of everyone arguing about it. I would also like to see smoking of all kinds banned in all public spaces. People can use vapes or edibles so that they aren't polluting the area with horrible stinky smoke. I used to smoke weed most days but then I switched to vaping when the vape industry took off and it was totally fine. You get just as high and if you use a good quality vape you still get that hit/kick that you would if you if were smoking (minus the nicotine, obviously). I haven't used weed since we started TTC DC1 over 6 years ago because I didn't want my children to pick up my bad habit. Starting a family made me rethink my views on stuff like this.

Sickandscared · 08/02/2020 10:36

I hate the smell of it. I hate hanging around with pot heads, in my experience they usually lack drive, are lazy and have slightly dirty houses. I could not be in a relationship with someone who smoked weed regularly.

Now to be clear - I am NOT talking about anyone who uses it for medicinal reasons. I am having treatment myself and a friend made me up a batch of cookies for the pain. In the end I didn't need them (the pain was not bad) but I would have preferred them to the super strong prescription painkillers.

To counter the argument that they are better than prescription drugs, I rarely take any meds for day to day stuff and struggled with the fact I now have to have chemo but going with it. And yes, grass may well be better than chemo but seeing people drink vodka beside the beach or at the train station isn't that attractive either. What is so wrong with experiencing life sober?

My DP and i are not teetotal but I would not like us to be the wine most evening types. I very rarely drink at home. I can't imagine why anyone would choose to be a little bit hungover every morning. I feel the same about grass hangovers (and yes i do get them).

It is not true that grass is not addictive or harmless. I have seen two friends become addicted. It is very sad and made a mess of their lives. I myself took a lot of drugs when I was younger. They did not suit me and when I stopped I 'just smoked grass' everyday for an entire year. For that year, I worked a deadbeat job, felt blue and got enormously fat. Nothing worse happened to me but if I had continued my life would be very different now.

I am talking about regular use by the way, not someone who smoked an occasional joint at a party.
