To ask how this is all going to end

I see Brexit and Trump as symptomatic of a rise in right wing views (FWIW I do believe there is a legitimate argument for Brexit just that it has been overshadowed by other issues). In some respects I can even see where they are coming from (protectionist stand point) but what I don't understand is how any good can come of what is happening now. I don't believe Trump has the capacity to MAGA because the world he wants back does not exist anymore. I think his actions have a huge global impact and he is totally destabilising peace within western civilisations.

Genuinely what do people believe is going to happen now and how is this all going to end?

I'm with you. I agree ish with what he's done. He wants America to support America. Support American business. Support Americans.

However . . .

I think his argument is severely flawed, (or rather the way he is presenting his argument), and I don't think he is capable of running America.

I do think he's dangerous. And I don't agree with a few things - like taking away the health rights of women. I'm kind of on edge awaiting concentration camps and starvation to the 'unwanted' residents of USA. Very reminiscent of another very dangerous man.

I am not sure if it is a rise in right wing views. I think they have always been there but repressed. People who would normally vote trump have been repeatedly told in the past that "you can't say that it's racist" and "that's a homophobic view"

So over the past 10 years they have decided rather than to be branded racist at every dinner party they go to they will instead just nod along quietly.

There views saved until the privacy of the voting booth.

well I hope it ends with everyone making sure that they are registered to vote and that they can be arsed to do it personally.

we have local elections coming up soon and yet again there will be a poor turn out of in most places under 50%. I wonder how many of those going on marches aren't either registered to vote or cant be arsed?

they then bleet about how these things they don't like happen but don't actually take the basic steps to stop it ie. voting.

so my hope is that all of this leads to a 99% turnout in the local elections.

I think that politics comes in cycles and that one day this will veer to the other side and hopefully the world won't be destroyed by then. I don't think it's going to be pleasant to live through.

Ask them 'what things' and they just get evasive.

Trump will be got rid of by the establishment at some point. (Or the CIA will manage another JFK type incident).

What I do think and hope will happen is we're going to see a revolution in social justice that will be like the ones in the 1960s on a way bigger scale, and this time it won't be a relatively small group of weirdos, its going to be ordinary people and the majority of people furiously standing up against racism, sexism, all forms of intolerance, and making their views heard. This is already starting. Trump is already quite unintentionally mobilising people by pissing them off in ways they haven't been pissed off in decades.

he wont be impeached. he is only doing what he said he would do. trouble is too many people vote for politicians on the basis that 99% of what they promise to do when they are in office wont happen

trump comes along. he promises something. he does it. and everyone is up in arms about how unexpected it is!

There wont be world war three. those of us old enough to remember Reagan remember loads of crap being written about him and how it would all end and it didn't.

most likely scenario is that this current uproar will continue for 6m - year. the American people who voted for him will see that he isn't what they thought he was and he will lame duck it until the end. that or someone will shoot him which I wouldn't entirely rule out, but don't condone.

Narky Do you think the Left is 'sane' ? I think that Trump is Obama's legacy, and that the 'sane' people haven't done that brilliantly if Trump can be voted in. Nice to note that you categorise those of us not on the left as not sane!

The 'sane' people are evidently deaf and blind, or spend a lot of time in the ostrich position if they couldn't see Brexit or Trump coming.

How it ends depends on what we all do about it.

There is no neutral position with the state of the world as it is. Not everybody can do everything, but most people can do something.

Narky, why cant you see that this sort of language and these sort of attitudes are the other side of the same coin as those that support Trump?

People cannot be classified as insane just because they have different politics to you, they really cannot be.

Why is a huge anti right wing rebellion any more acceptable than a huge anti left wing rebellion or a rebellion against rights?

I have some views you could classify as right wing, some views you could classify as left wing, I am anti monarchy and pro-brexit.

we don't all fit into a box. you are talking like someone off the young ones Narky and its not grown up or sensible really.

People have a right to their views in a democracy.

when people stop adopting the old maxim " I disagree with what you say but will defend with my life your right to say it" we are in serious, serious trouble.

Remember almost 3m more people voted for Hilary than Trump! So he is not there because people voted him in - he is there because of an outdated electoral collage system which he himself wanted abolished not 5 years ago.

That is the only single fact that prevents me from totally giving up on the human race at the moment!

so Libby, there is something practical that anti trumps can do. they can start building a movement to change the electoral college system. they can set up a website and a facebook group and have meetings and deliver leaflets and get candidates on their side and into power.

that's how you change a democracy.

They aren't. The ones supporting and cheering on the clear insanity that is passing for politics currently are insane.
I'm not a representative for anything or anyone. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm merely giving my opinion.

I think we are living in an age of insanity. A perma tanned bankrupt rapist reality star is now one of the most powerful people in the world. If you don't think that's insane, why the fuck not?

Interesting question you pose re correlation between vote for Brexit and vote for Trump - both stemming from protectionist, anti-immigration ideologies....... How many who voted Brexit are now protesting their horror at Trump? Not meaning to be inflammatory, just interested in the answer.

The majority of people never held that maxim to be true in the first place. Trump doesn't.

It's a swing thing. People think we had swung too far to the left and we were losing our culture and regaining a new one by stealth. There is now a hard swing to the right and I'm praying eventually we will find some middle ground again.

I think one of the problems is that it has become socially unacceptable in many contexts to voice any other political opinion than vaguely left-of-centre.

It hasn't been possible to voice concerns about immigration without being labelled a racist.

It hasn't been possible to agree with the principles of austerity without being shouted down for being nasty.

I have seen people ostracised for voting for a mainstream political party in the UK - yet that party is currently in power.

Yet if people are stopped from expressing even moderate views that are out of kilter with the prevailing "liberal" sentiment, how can we be surprised that when people get a chance to express their views at the ballot box they aren't what commentators are necessarily expecting. I think Trump is probably a symptom of this.

And I'm writing this from the position of someone who has a vaguely left-wing view of the world, who has no concerns about immigration, thinks austerity has gone too far and has never voted Conservative.

The fact I feel I have to defend myself by saying that probably illustrates my point...
