This is what worries me as well.

This is how Brexit happened, and it was completely avoidable.

And now the rise of the Far Right is avoidable, but it seem common sense is in short supply.

Yes. If the UK and Europe got a proper grip on illegal immigration and the abuse of the asylum system, and high legal migration levels, it would cut the far right off at the knees.

I've noticed the nudges. Store three days food, water. Get battery radios. Write down emergency numbers on paper in case phones are down. Pack a bag with clothes, first aid kit.

Wtf are they up to, another COVID type compliance test. Is it happening in other countries does anyone know?

Just what are we going to do with those phone numbers if phones are down. You can’t use a landline without electric since they went digital. Not that we, nor many others, still have one.
A diet of local venison for us then. I’d pity those living in towns.

Other countries do give periodic reminders that this is common sense stuff to have lying around in case of any issues.

I would particularly say water, because parts of Essex and Kent were without water for five days in the thick of a heatwave so do please bear in mind that you need water for basics like flushing the toilet! Strangely, when I was living in London, there were a few issues with my particular street having both water issues and electric outages. There was emergency backup lighting in my block of flats, but the one I’m in now doesn’t have it.

I don’t know what in particular inspired our government to say it. It does get said periodically though, doesn’t it? Usually before winter.

in a small flat, there is a limit to what I can keep, but I do try and keep what I can.

Like you said we still have a digital landline but it will go down.

No mention of car radios. Will modern cars be immobilised somehow?

I’m not an expert, but I’m pretty sure that cars can only be immobilised as individual vehicles. I don’t think an attack on the grid or Internet infrastructure would affect your car. It would affect things you have in your car like your satnav and so on.

Just asked DH his VW can be identified if he presses a button in the car. It's a diagnostic tool apparently if he has an issue.

I'm going to hang onto my old banger with no Bluetooth etc.

@justasking111 i’ve just looked it up and those local radio frequencies that link to wireless key fobs could potentially be attacked yes

I’ve only ever had an old banger with a regular key. I totally agree with sticking to it. That was mainly because I thought that wireless key fobs were a faff and you’ve got a lot more security to worry about

But it seems that the answer to your question is yes, in theory, it would be an attack on the radio system rather than the Internet system, but in a war an opponent might switch that off.

I’ve never understood why we have these fancy systems either, but I hadn’t thought about them being hacked en masse by the enemy.

Luxury belief to loftily ‘not have anything to do with’ in a hypothetical situation.
You clearly have no idea what Germany had had to put up with since Merkel. And memories are long about they they have undergone in the last century.

It’s surely a luxury belief of any us as to how we would react to AfD if we were in charge of other German parties, since none of us is a German politician (as far as I know).

I’m just saying that I regard AfD as extreme and unpleasant and, trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who might have to take such a decision (as the bigger German parties have to), I would shun AfD.

My view is simply that Europe’s seen enough barbarism and tyranny from the extremes of right and left to last it forever. We don’t need any more and we should be careful to avoid it. I wouldn’t deal with far-left parties either, and post-WWII they - and their terrorist fellow travellers - have been much the more dangerous. But for now we have a concern about the extreme right rising in Germany again.

I understand that Germans are restless about the state their country’s in. But extremism isn’t going to help.

Certainly there are lessons for centrist parties in all this.

On the other hand they had over 44% of the votes with an impressively high turnout.

Surely instead of hand wringing by the mainstream parties the more useful way would have been not to let the electorate become so exasperated as to vote for them?

We see missed opportunities to curtail the Far Right here and in Europe and this is worrying.

Maybe that connects to the hundreds of young men invading our shores? That sounds silly typing it but the world is changing beyond what we were convinced we knew was true.

Well I don't know what Germany suffered under Merkel to any great extent. If 44% of 75% of voters want AFD to make changes and believe in them I wish them well.
