Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Greetings to all, regulars, lurkers, and those who just found us!

It's Thanksgiving Eve in New York. DD and son-in-law had an uneventful flight this morning and were early enough to avoid the traveling hordes.

DH made his Holiday Mashed Potatoes with butter, cream cheese, and sour cream to take to my brother's house tomorrow. DS made stuffing with apples and sausage, and I have an apple pie in the oven. We went out to pick up sourdough bread from the bakery to bring with us tomorrow and stopped by our favorite appliance store to order a new dishwasher as part of our kitchen remodel. DH has researched what to buy, and we've ordered a Bosch, which will be installed next Friday.

I'm making a list of what we're bringing for tomorrow's meal, and it's a lot. Both fridges are very full.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! It's such a lovely holiday.

The turkeys are wild, and I saw them in my front yard in September. They are not on the menu tomorrow. 😁

Slow start to the day but DH contacted the GP surgery about the dressing on his hand following a minor operation on Monday. They saw him at 11 and redressed the wound so he can now move his hand and doesn't have bodily fluids oozing from a manky bandage. Seriously surgeons, get a nurse to dress the wounds, don't try this yourselves, it's not your speciality.

Washed the burgundy new bedding set today. Forgot to zip the duvet cover (zips on duvet covers - life-changing) so it ate the rest of the set, except actually everything was caught up in the fitted sheet. Pleased with myself that I found the setting to dry it for 20 mins. The dryer is so intelligent it stops when items are dry. Except when they get caught up in fitted sheets and are still damp. This time setting stops it drying and stopping every three minutes.

Went to get my nails done. Unexpectedly walked past my old nail bar and they had no customers and no-one waiting. So I went there rather than the new nail bar further down the hill where they are super quick. The technician was quicker than I remembered and no other customers came in the whole time I was there. I'd also parked very nearby so it all worked out splendidly. Trying not to feel guilty about not going to the new place.

I put the green new bedding on the bed. We bought a super king duvet to stop duvet stealing in the night and it's been very successful. However the duvet is massive and we don't have a long drop area over the stairs to make it easier to put on the cover. I now use the Burrito method, which makes even a super king duvet easy to manage. For those who haven't yet discovered this easy-peasy way to put on a duvet cover, here's an article with videos. https://www.glamour.com/story/duvet-cover-hack

Quiet evening of TV resisting the temptation to pour a nightcap. It's the prospect of Christmas cheer which starts next week that tempted me. I expect a lot of nightcaps soon.

There's an Incredible Hack to Put a Comforter Inside a Duvet Cover Easily

Save yourself the unnecessary stress and hassle.

Awww Penguinsa, that's good you changed your departure. 😀

Just got laundry on here, dc are napping (surprisingly), I'm trying to find a My First Christmas pj for baby that I don't have to order online, it's 5c and cloudy and I'm sitting here scrolling, posting on a hot thread, and nibbling on some yummy stollen with my latte. Will wake dc shortly and head out. Laundry just finished.

Hello and welcome to newbies. 🥰

CalicoPusscat · 28/11/2024 00:37

I wish life was a little more dull here!

But I can't fall asleep yet, have a cup of tea and heard from heard from my American cousin earlier. She is such a lovely person. Here in England we got a bit battered by Storm Bert my window blew out

Deathraystare · 28/11/2024 06:56

@M@Mumtobabyhavoc

Stollen! I love Stollen! I am coming round! (Oh alright, I have my own at home. Just a little one.)

@CalicoPusscat
Oh what a pain (no I am not making a joke here - pane geddit?) Hope you can get it fixed soon and it is not too costly.

@MyrtleStrumpet
Great innit when you find the place otherwise empty. Doesn't often happen..

I sometimes go to my hairdresser and never make an appointment. Spur of the moment thing. Luckily I don't mind a wait as it is often busy. They are cheap but are very good.

@MissConductUS
Enjoy yourselves today and I am glad that the wild turkeys are not on the menu.

CalicoPusscat · 28/11/2024 07:35

@Deathraystare no I wouldn't have spotted that until you pointed that out 😂

Bit sleep deprived. Window was easy to fix though so all sorted

DandyDandylion · 28/11/2024 07:49

Place marking till I have time to catch up.

sueelleker · 28/11/2024 08:45

MissConduct Bosch are very durable. Mine's 14 years old, and has only just packed up.

MissConductUS · 28/11/2024 10:32

Welcome @MyrtleStrumpet and @CalicoPusscat. Thanks for sharing your dull news.

Myrtle, I hope your husband's hand gets better soon. You're right; most doctors are rubbish at bandaging. That duvet hack looks brilliant!

Calico, where in America does your lovely cousin live? I'm in an area of New York called the Hudson Highlands, not terribly far north of New York City. We're on two acres of land, surrounded by a county nature preserve, so we get all sorts of wildlife wandering through the garden.

I'm up quite early, which is nice for getting some time to myself with a full house. We got an Italian takeaway last night, as DH couldn't be bothered to cook. He and our adult son (24 years old) do most of the cooking. DD is 22 and was married in June, then moved away with her husband, who is attending graduate school in the Midwest.

That's good to know about the Bosch dishwashers, Sue. We have a wonderful non-profit organization here called Consumer Reports that does independent testing of cars, appliances, electronics, etc. and they top rated all of the Bosch dishwashers. We also just replaced our Miele washing machine, so German appliances are becoming the norm chez Conduct.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I totally agree about Bosch appliances. Despite being offered the three appliances already installed when we moved in three years ago, we declined and bought Bosch (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer) and then an oven when it went kaput. We are very happy. DH wants a convection hob next year. We are in rural Cambridgeshire, England and we love it. Very sunny today, but chilly: 0 degrees Celsius.

Not much planned for today but tomorrow and the weekend will be busy with Christmas decorating then next week is busier. We are trying to get our rowan tree reduced in height and less spread over the neighbours' gardens so I have a tree surgeon coming, dental appointment and seeing my best friend in London and going to a concert to see an old 80s band. As next week will be quite exciting I will restrain myself from being too enthusiastic on here.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/11/2024 13:47

Morning everyone, 🥱
Just up tending to baby who is 11 m/o today!
2c and foggy here.
Took dc for a lovely walk around Lafarge Lake in a suburb, Coquitlam, last night. Had heard the light display was good, but had never been there. It was worth the drive.
Miss, I like being up early on my own, too. Enjoy having everyone at home. 🥰

Has your rowan got any berries? You could make rowan jelly.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 28/11/2024 15:11

Congratulations on 11 months old BabyHavoc!

Our Miele washing machine is kinda good but after a while it wasn't cleaning properly and we had to do a super hot wash each week with a large handful of bicarb of soda in. That seemed to solve the problem and I've seen others complaining of the same thing.

The wild turkeys looks wonderful!

@Umanresources I hope the form filling went well .. .best of luck. If you get turned down it's well worth taking it to appeal. They often turn down the first application on principle, ime.

MyrtleStrumpet · 28/11/2024 15:11

sueelleker · 28/11/2024 15:08

Has your rowan got any berries? You could make rowan jelly.

The berries appear late September and the birds eat them from the crown down until early November when the tree looks utterly naked.

The lower limbs are above head height and we're going to have the bottom tranche removed as part of the work. Picking rowan berries would be hard and life is too short.

MissConductUS · 28/11/2024 16:20

The dishwasher will be our first Bosch appliance, and I'm sure we'll love it. I love the new Miele washing machine. It's connected to Wi-Fi, and I get notified when the cycle is complete. It also dispenses the detergent automatically, which struck me as over-egging it a bit at first. Still, now I love being able to throw the clothes in and start the cycle without dealing with the detergent. I've added the replacement detergent cartridges to my Amazon subscribe and save order.

Duckling, it sounds like your Miele had mineral build up from hard water. Our water here is fairly soft, so it was never a problem for our old Miele, but it sounds like you've fixed it. I think Miele also offers a product that does the demineralization treatment.

DD, SiL, and DS are up and having toasted everything bagels with cream cheese, which is a very NY breakfast. I'm getting us organized to leave for my brother's house in an hour or so. It's about 5 degrees C and raining, so it's not a lovely morning, but the rain is supposed to stop by mid-afternoon, so we won't have to drive home in it. And it's not snowing. Further north of here is supposed to get 5-10 inches of snow today. I can't complain, we've had a terrible drought here for the last two months, so any precipitation is appreciated.

Here's what we're bringing:

  • Jumbo shrimp (prawns?) with cocktail sauce and fresh lemons
  • Brie cheese
  • French bread
  • assorted crackers for the cheese
  • Italian dry sausage
  • homemade apple pie
  • homemade chocolate chip cookies
  • posh chocolate turkeys for everyone's place-setting
  • Holiday Mashed Potatoes with cream cheese, butter, and sour cream
  • Bread stuffing with apples and Italian sweet sausage
  • Assorted fizzy drinks

I think that's it. I hope I'm not forgetting something.

Here's another picture of the turkeys from my kitchen window. The land on the other side of the stone wall is part of the nature preserve.

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I thought I'd post this link, given the historical significance to our shared British and American history. It's also a bit dull. 😀

Very happy Thanksgiving @MissConductUS and other Americans! :)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/11/2024 17:57

Miss, that sounds like a meal itself! 🤗
@sueelleker haven't seen you in a while! Everything ok?

I am now going to google Rowan Trees...🧐
About to have bagel with cream cheese and morello cheery jam. Miss I cannot do seeds on a bagel. I can't stand things that get caught in my teeth. 🤷‍♀️
Have got latte ready.
Will likely order pj's from Etsy. I hate that as I'm dubious about fit etc, but emailed store and I think size will work. 🤞
Off to buy another item or two for Christmas today as well.

Forgot to say Happy Thanksgiving to Miss and the other Americans and expats celebrating today.
Happy Turkey Day! I've got the Macy's parade on in solidarity.

Thanks for the link Myrtle.

Fog is gone now and it's somewhat sunny with high cloud and 5c.

DandyDandylion · 28/11/2024 21:59

Hope all the thanksgiving celebrations have gone well and you are all collapsed in a happy haze of lovely food and family time.

I have had a lovely day, saw the new Paddington movie which was surprisingly emotional. Lots of references to dc growing up and not spending as much time with you. Then lunch with two lovely ladies before I went back to the school run and after school routine. I popped into a couple of shops in town as well and there were very long queues, it is ramping up now as everyone tries to get their Christmas shopping done.
