I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Welcome, @Maddy70, and thanks for sharing your news. He might appreciate a giggle or two.

We’ve just finished eating. I had apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. And a chocolate chip cookie.

We have a three and a five year old boy with us this year. I have forgotten what that’s like.

Welcome @Maddy70 Sorry to hear of the break up. 💐
Dandy, I tear up to Puff the Magic Dragon. I might not survive Paddington.

Just out with dc for the evening. Looks like it'll be a late one again.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 29/11/2024 08:09

Don't cry often. Except Puff the Magic Dragon does it, every time.

Sad goodbye to one of the other receptionists today as it is her last day and she will be retiring. I bloody forgot to bring in a cake too! |However she will be in not this weekend but next weekend to clear out her drawer and I have already (rudely) got dibs on it as it is better than mine!

A sad day but I will feel it more next week I think!

We will be severely short staffed as one is dead, one is retired and one is holidaying until 9th January! We do have another bank staff though.

@MissConductUS
Apple pie and ice cream. Mmmmmm.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/11/2024 16:51

Ducky, even before dc for me. 🥲

MissConductUS · 29/11/2024 17:31

Deathray, DD and I made the pie, and it was fabulous. We warmed it in the oven before serving, so the ice cream on top of it melted a bit.

Duckling, the five-year-old wasn't bad, but the three-year-old kept singing. He also had a hand puppet shaped like a goldfish, with a mouth he could open and close with his hand. He thought it was hilarious to "bite" people with it.

On the way up to my brother's house we stopped for petrol and DH noticed a problem with one of tires. It's an old set, so he's going to get them all replaced later today.

I've taken advantage of a Black Friday deal to try a Britbox subscription for $2.25 per month for two months. I'll dive in this weekend and see what's worth watching.

DD and SiL are leaving tomorrow. I think DS will make pizza unless everyone wants another takeaway.

My DH thought Christmas started this evening, so he cracked open a bottle of Trivento Reserve Malbec. I objected (mildly) because I have a 9am medical appointment tomorrow (yes, on a Saturday, I know!). So he has agreed we won't be having nightcaps.

My DSD (his adult DD who lives with us because she has mild learning difficulties) has joined us for family night - an irregular event on a Friday evening if she's not too tired or busy. We are watching The Brokenwood Mysteries, a New Zealand cosy crime series. We will watch Gogglebox afterwards.

The DSD hasn't worked it out yet, bur we have Magnum ice creams at about 8.30pm on family night. lt's always lovely to see her surprise even though it's actually part of the routine. We also put a box containing a spare laptop charger on her seat. She'd asked for a spare for Christmas but we decided it was a necessary household expense so gave it to her this evening. She was very happy as it means she can use her laptop in her bedroom and sitting room without having to unplug cables and move them. She will go to bed after Gogglebox, we will watch something funny or musical or both.

And my DH also acts as barista so he has agreed to provide coffee for the morning's drive.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/11/2024 21:17

I've also managed most of my Christmas shopping.

Went to Glow in Langley again last night. Clearly, a week was all it took for me to forget what a nightmare the drive is. 🤦‍♀️😵‍💫

Sounds so lovely. 🥰

Very cosy. From the 22 December we will hunker down and hibernate for a very cosy Christmas till New Year's Day. No rules, except meal times and presents at 2pm on Christmas Day. PJs, chocolate, fizzy wine and posh fizzy wine, plenty of Malbec, telly and snoozing.

I am looking forward to sharing my calm news over the Christmas period.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/11/2024 06:58

Myrtle, sounds exactly as it should be. 🥰

Took dc downtown this evening for the lighting of the Vancouver Christmas tree at the art gallery. Wasn't much of a party as the music and everything wrapped up not long after the tree was lit, however the music before was nice. Went to Kits for "special cake" after to celebrate baby's 11 month birthday and enquire about a custom size for the coconut cake (which I love and had tonight) for baby's birthday next month.

Gosh I got really left behind on the previous thread. Will try to catch up at some point.
I spent 3 fairly full hours on a safeguarding course for a voluntary role yesterday evening (6-9pm On A Friday - should have been illegal) and today DC2 has yet another swim gala, DC4 has a football match and I have my school’s Christmas Fair. I will be dragging as many teenagers as possible to help…

Deathraystare · 30/11/2024 11:33

@M@MissConductUS

Lovely! that's how to serve warm apple pie - with ice cream!

Used to hate it when mum served it cold without custard. Weird woman!e pie should be warm if you are serving it with ice cream! Them's is the rules!! Of course if it is cold you serve custard.

Mum used to sometimes serve it cold with nothing! Mad woman!!

Deathraystare · 30/11/2024 11:33

Oops! Typed it twice cos it disappeared. Now who is the mad woman??!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/11/2024 17:38

@HelenaJustina Glad to know everything is okay and you've just been busy. 😊

MyrtleStrumpet · 30/11/2024 17:46

Medical appointment went well. It turns out I'm not absorbing oestrogen at all, so I no longer have to rub gel into my arms every morning. I am to have bioidentical HRT tablets and there should be a noticeable improvement within a week.

A second landscape gardener came to quote to build a patio. He grew up in this location and was telling us that where we live used to be a car showroom and the site of municipal works. We bought this place three years ago and we have framed maps of it from 1902 on the walls so we love hearing about the history.

DH brought down the Christmas tree, lights and decorations from the loft (where I have never ventured). Put up the tree and decorated it with DSD. She was such a help and really enjoyed it, finishing by putting Mr Snowman at the foot of the tree. She's had him since she was six. I explained that the tree is about us as a family and it has my things, her dad's things, her things and our things. Every year we add something new and it's our family history. Mr Snowman is there to guard the presents when they arrive.

As always, we thanked past Myrtle Strumpet and Mr Strumpet for tidying everything away so well last year that very little untangling of lights had to be done.

Present Mr & Ms Strumpet decided on improvements for next year, as always, so Future Mr & Ms Strumpet will thank us for such things as putting the plug for the Christmas tree lights in the Christmas tree box, not the lights box, where other plugs were available and it took a bit of time to establish which plug belonged to which set of lights. Mr Strumpet also wrote on the cardboard around which the room lights are wrapped "power supply at the end". Past Mr Strumpet had wound the lights round the cardboard with the power supply first last year, so.he had to unwind 20m of lights before he could put them up. Future Mr Strumpet will be pleased.

A very dinky little Christmas tree was delivered for Mr Strumpet's home office. Very cute but we ordered warm white lights and this year we put the bright white lights on his office. It looks cute, but I wish I'd thought to order a bright white version.

I have also had all the presents for him delivered already and it's not even December. A pair of brandy glasses arrived yesterday just as I came home from an appointment so he accepted the package. It said "fragile, glass" all over it and it was as light as a feather. I've hidden it and just hope he'll have forgotten by Christmas. If it had been me accepting a package for him, I would have guessed its contents correctly by now.

Saturday night is film night so we shall watch Blitz, starring Saoirse Ronan. Apparently it's quite good and Stephen Graham has a cameo in it for 10 minutes with Kathy Burke.

Pic of the tree and lights with Mr Snowman ready for duty.

MissConductUS · 30/11/2024 18:24

It's lovely to see you @HelenaJustina, and I'm glad you found the new thread.

@Deathraystare, the kids polished off the last of the apple pie last night, so there was no second helping for me. I'll make it again for Christmas.

@MyrtleStrumpet, about 10% of patients don't absorb well with the trans-dermal gels, so it's not that unusual. DH does testosterone replacement with a gel, and fortunately, it works well for him. You are certainly getting into the Christmas spirit!

We ended up going out to dinner last night at a gastro-pub my daughter likes. My daughter and SiL are leaving for the airport in a couple of hours. It's been lovely to see them.

The AV receiver for our home theater system is acting up, and it's many years out of warranty, so DH got a Black Friday deal on a replacement. He also bought four Michelin tires for his car after spotting a problem with one of them on Thanksgiving. I don't know if they sell them in the UK, but they're called Michelin CrossClimate 2s. They're rated as snow tires, but you leave them on the car year-round. We can get a lot of snow here, so they will replace a set of snow tires he had and we won't have the bother of changing them in the spring and fall.

I ordered a new kitchen table for our remodel and it came yesterday. DH put it together this morning and it's much nicer than the old one, and a better fit for the space. That was another Black Friday deal.

DH found out that his organization is hiring someone at his level in another department for about 15% more than he makes. New York passed a law recently requiring job advertisements to list a good-faith salary range, so he was a bit annoyed about that and is going to speak to HR about getting a salary adjustment. I suspect he'll get it, as they know he's retiring next year, and they need him to hire and train his replacement.

It's nice here, but it's gotten very cold. At least the weather is good for DD's flight out later today.

I don’t know if it is the same where you are MissC but here if you don’t ask for a pay rise you generally don’t get it and women are much less likely to ask. The first time I had a review in a temporary job the boss told me how everything was going and asked how I felt. I said it was all going well but I would like a rise. She simply smiled and bumped me up 20% as I was on a very low first job salary. It was only years later I realised she had smiled because most women don’t ask.
I’m loving all the Christmas photos, my DH is away this weekend and me and the dc popped into town to see the medieval Christmas at the castle. A medieval dentist told my dd she had a tooth worm which needed to be killed. The belief was that holes in teeth were made by worms so they poked them with a red hot poker. This was to kill the worm but in actual fact killed the nerve so the patient didn’t feel the tooth ache anymore. I’m glad things have moved on. The old fashioned Santa was a sight to behold.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/11/2024 20:10

@DandyDandylion
That tooth story sounds awful!
I had to google to learn what you meant about medieval castle visits. I found this. Did you go to one of them? Looks amazing! (You don't need to say where if it's too outing for you)

DandyDandylion · 30/11/2024 21:04

It was indeed an English heritage event Havoc.

mathanxiety · 30/11/2024 21:08

Thanksgiving is all done and dusted and we'll be eating leftovers for a while : ) It's bitterly cold here so I'm able to keep them all in the three season porch.

DD4 and I had a moment to of panic last evening when the TV screen said 'Channel not available' for every channel. We ended up unplugging the HDMI cable, blowing some dust off it, and plugging it in again, then doing a full channel scan. We got CBS back (haven't had it for ages for reasons that will always be a mystery) as well as the rest. However, we opted to use DD's free for a month Britbox trial instead of the TV, and watched an Agatha Christie episode with Hercule Poirot. I realized half way through that I'd seen it before but it was entertaining all the same.

The wild turkeys are amazing, MissC.
Thank you for the thread.

sproutsandparsnips · 30/11/2024 21:45

Medieval castle Christmas sounds just up my street @DandyDandylion!
Love the pics of the turkeys you are not going to eat @MissConductUS.
@MyrtleStrumpet sounds absolutely wonderful.
Good to hear from you @HelenaJustina it's quite daunting when there is so much to catch up on (in a nice way)!
You sound very short staffed @Deathraystare - hope you dont have to work too much extra.
Went to watch DS play rugby today. Went quite a long way to see the team not play too well but bonus stopped raining just before kick off. Spent 2 hours putting up a really annoying tree and stringing lights on it. Actually decorating it took about 20 mins! Have to take DS2 tomorrow so will need to finish the decorating when we get back.
I have had this week off work and went to visit a friend near London. We went to Les Miserables and visited the national gallery as well as having afternoon tea.

HildaTablet · 30/11/2024 22:24

Your decorations look lovely @MyrtleStrumpet.

Waves to everyone. I spent the morning strolling round a cathedral city, making a few purchases, and then didn’t do much in the afternoon. I’m building up the energy for baking multiple mince pies for our forthcoming book-club meeting. I’m still deciding exactly what to make. In the past I've just made the traditional variety but I’m toying with the idea of crumble-topped ones, and/or a frangipane topping. Decisions, decisions!
