I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is a link to the prior thread:

Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Miss, I love fog. It's supposed to warm up here in the next few days and rain starting tomorrow. I see you're trying out -io endings now. 😂 Good for you. It keeps lufe fun. 🤗
Death, glad you had good news at the appt. I ran into a neighbour the other day, also diabetic, who told me he had been in hospital with an infection and at one point doctors were preparing him for the possibility of amputation. Luckily, he pulled through. Please look after yourself, Death. 🩷
Myrtle, model is coming along.😄 How long to make the stairs?

Had Havoc at school. Full class today. Just having lunch then I'm off to an appt.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 13/02/2025 21:00

@MyrtleStrumpet lovely stairs. Really complex and fiddly! must be very dextrous.

Been a challenging day here. Younger son's having a hard time at school, older autistic son has turned back into a Teenage Mutant Ninja Monster again, woke up at 4am again and then lost my temper at Mumsnet mistake on a thread that @MissConductUS and I frequent. At least the mistake has been rectified and the lake was lovely, though sadly I may have shocked two teens who turned up to smoke weed as I went in au natural, not really expecting anyone not a swimmer to turn up in the dark and cold! I'm not sure they were expecting a late middle age Earth Mother version of Venus to arise from the waves.

At least a close friend and I managed to get some clothes together for a lady from Africa who arrived here some weeks ago heavily pregnant and with an 18 month old, with -no- winter clothes for the arriving baby. Her poor toddler is going around in 0 degree weather in shorts and socks. At least tomorrow the toddler and baby-to-arrive will get coats, shoes, jumpers, jeans, rompers and a full kit of basics. Makes me so cross that people have to go without, especially a very small toddler.

How long to make the stairs?

Thank you both!

The time it took was difficult to work out because I work until a natural pause - a meal, the loo, the end of a section or page. I probably worked about four hours yesterday and then stopped once the stairs were finished.

The wood steps were easy - glue two sides, bend the black paper to make the riser and stick to the wood - you'll see I folded it in the wrong place on the top stair. It has a bulge where it should have been a line across the top. You can see where the actual fold should have been.
Then threading on the post and adjusting them to rotate the stairs more or less equally - all this was about 25 minutes.
Glueing the dollar signs took another 15 minutes and I had to work out where I should glue them as I originally thought they should be on the step itself but compromised by sticking on the side.
The longest bit was the bannister. I wanted to glue it just to the top edge of the dollars but that was impossible, so I glued to the "front" at the top. That took another 15-20 minutes and I had to keep glueing and holding till I worked it out.
And 11 pieces each of wood, risers and dollars and the bannister had to be pressed out carefully so I think it was probably about 90 minutes in the end.

I get really absorbed. DH has provided me with a scalpel and I found an old rigid mouse mat, so the cutting out has got easier. I've bought a metal ruler, a cutting mat and a set of craft tweezers to help.

Having said it was too fiddly I'm now realising just how much I have enjoyed it. It's possible likely I'll order another book nook soon.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 13/02/2025 21:41

The tiny little bulge at the top will disappear in the overall intricacy of the book nook! The dollar signs look lovely on the sides. Gave my partner something a bit like that for Christmas one year, though less detailed. It took him ages, but the result is very pretty. it has a light inside that you can turn on so it's got nice soft backlighting, which really adds to it.

MyrtleStrumpet · 13/02/2025 23:22

Oh yes! There are at least six lights.

I could have added a music box mechanism but it wasn't flagged at the start of the build and will take a week to arrive, so I decided against music.

@MyrtleStrumpet 😲😲! Those stairs are fantastic !

Do you use magnifying glasses to do the fiddly bits ?

No, but I do often photograph the instructions so I can zoom in and see what goes where.

See this image of the street instructions and then my version.

Absolutely gorgeous. Love the mosaic floor and the clocks.

Beautiful sunny day here after all the grey ones recently. Cold and clear (1 degree).

MyrtleStrumpet · 14/02/2025 15:09

The images here represent three hours' work. I have to stop for at least an hour now and that may be it for the day.

The stairs are almost impossible see right now, but hopefully that will improve when the lights are switched on.

🩷 Happy Valentine's Day 🩷

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 14/02/2025 17:04

It's gorgeous @MyrtleStrumpet The clock tower looks so nice in particular.

The glass in the windows - real glass or perspex or something?

Perspex! And tricky to remove two pieces of backing paper (one each side) for two pieces (each a semi circle), and keep/clean the glue off!

mathanxiety · 14/02/2025 20:20

Amazing skill, Myrtle. Where do you keep your models when they're built?

bizzey I hope your doctors can figure out what's going wrong.

MissC hoping your kitchen is well on the way to completion at this point.

havoc lovely photos. You have a fantastic view from your apartment.

We were bracing ourselves for at least six inches of snow on Wednesday, but only got about two. Some schools declared a snow day the evening before. This is not the first time the winter weather forecast has been spectacularly wrong. They were right about the bitter cold though.

I got someone else's grocery order yesterday, two bags of apples I didn't order. I called the supermarket they had come from but they said not to worry, they'll just look up who should have had the apples and send some more, and I could keep them. Eighteen apples is more than DD and I could eat in a few weeks, so I decided to make apple butter with them. I ended up with 4 X 12 oz jars of apple butter (the apples cook down a lot) and I used my new hand held blender (from Christmas) to turn them into paste. The apartment still smells like apples and cinnamon.

Hope everyone is enjoying Valentine's Day.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/02/2025 21:43

Math, can't claim that view. It was from an appointment I was at on the 20th floor of a tower on West Broadway.

Apple butter 😛😛😛
Quick thinking and good use of the hand blender!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/02/2025 22:00

@MissConductUS Thread is almost full!

MyrtleStrumpet · 14/02/2025 22:16

Apple butter sounds amazing! What do you eat it with?

I have a set of bookshelves where the models live, but they are getting full with models and books. It's the process I enjoy rather than the finished model. I learn so much about building.

Today I realised I'd set up one of the buildings too far from the other when I started the build. Next time I would probably read ahead very closely rather than skim read as I did with this one. So I now have some fancy curved wood pieces that don't reach the opposite building!

And it was so fiddly at the beginning I thought I would give up or definitely not do another, but I've enjoyed it much more than I expected.

bizzey · 14/02/2025 22:36

Just wondering if any of you lovely people take Magnesium supplements?

I have been reading up on them (I know I need them !!) and just can't work out good ones or scam ones !

Or are they all a bit trial and error depending on the actual persons make up ?

bizzey · 14/02/2025 22:42

Forgot to say ....
I had a meeting at ds's college today .
A bit intense for various reasons !

Went to the pub next door for drink and food.
It is opposite the Town Hall.

By the time the 3rd wedding party walked in the door ...we realised what day it was today 😂😂💖💖!!

Then a little tiny baby came in for its first pub visit !
Approx 1 week old ...so I presume having just being registered at the Town Hall !

Mums and dad came to and had a well deserved pint ...(Well the dad did !)...and some food !

TThen ...the cutest toddler turned up with his parents as well !
(It is a hotel type of pub)

It was a fantastic day for people watching 😂😂😂..

I need to get out more 😂😂

bizzey · 14/02/2025 22:46

I forgot I had asked for the magnesium.
I am going to start a thread as well .

But I feeI trust all of your answers more than " strangers " !! 😂😂

mathanxiety · 14/02/2025 22:59

Myrtle that's what DD asked when she saw the jars on the counter :-)
I had some on sourdough toast this morning, and it was lovely. I think I'm going to swirl some through a pecan and cinnamon coffee cake I'll be making this weekend, and DD was thinking it might be nice in a Victoria sponge
It tastes like apple pie.

I take Magnesium Carbonate and I think it helps with cramp - at least the amount it happens has reduced a lot. I -think- it helps with a frequently-uncomfortable stomach too, and perhaps with sleep.

So far no drawbacks that I'm aware of.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 14/02/2025 23:25

sorry, Magnsium Glycinate! Doh. Should have been in bed an hour ago.

sueelleker · 15/02/2025 08:43

Just watch out for Magnesium Sulphate-that's Epson Salts, and is very efficient if you're constipated!
