Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

I am not hopeful for the product I have order.

For the 1st time ever , I forgot I check it out on trustpilot thing .....and I think I may have been scammed/duped 😞😞😢!

Need to get it sorted though before I start oing the Christmas cooking.

I want to get it professionally cleaned ...but I feel I still need to clean it myself first 😂😂 !!

WearyAuldWumman · 06/12/2024 15:48

I want to see whether it's possible to get an element replaced in the main oven. Was going to get a new one, but I have other work that needs to be done first and there's no point in having a new oven until I get that done.

I was put off professional cleaning when I was working in a certain school. The school catchment had "multiple indicators of deprivation" but was in a rather lovely residential street.

I was on dinner duty. The dinner hall was a hut which had been put in place after the war and looked onto the lovely old houses on the opposite side of the street.

The dinner ladies were gathered round a window, watching as professional cleaners dealt with one of the neighbours' oven. To my astonishment, the professionals were cleaning it out in the street.

There were various mutterings from the dinner ladies of "My Goad...Can she no clean her ain oven?" and "I wouldnae let folk see my oven in that state!"

I'm still bewildered about the fact that the oven (freestanding I'm assuming) was taken outside. I'm assuming it solved any problem with fumes, but I wouldn't want an audience if my oven were being cleaned.

On the plus side, it made the dinner ladies' day.

WearyAuldWumman · 06/12/2024 15:49

Yes, @bizzey - cleaning it first myself is what I would have to do!

That doesn't sound pleasant at all!

I broke my ankle five years ago and the cartilage between the tibia and the talus has worn away. Very painful but I will get an ankle fusion in two years.

Annoyingly I was placed on the waiting list about four weeks ago and they referred me for a steroid injection in the ankle. They said I wouldn't be able have the surgery within six months of the injection. Had the injection the following week (which was very quick, I had expected to wait a few months). Two days later they called to offer me a cancellation to have the fusion the next week and could income into hospital for tests. Sadly I had just had the injection so I'm back in the list.

Mad innit?

DandyDandylion · 06/12/2024 18:05

My dd and I are getting into the Christmas spirit watching a bit of television each day after dinner. So far we have watched the snowman, Father Christmas and the flight before Christmas. It certainly lifts the spirits before I put the evening news on.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 06/12/2024 19:37

We have battened down the hatches in anticipation of the storm, we live in a red zone which is a bit concerning. I’ve had emails off the council to say lots of things are closed tomorrow, a message from the club DD was meant to attend to say it’s off and my phone just let out an alarming 3 blast horn sound which is apparently the government alert 😬. DH is talking about moving the cars away from the house in case we lose some roof tiles. The wind is definitely picking up…

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/12/2024 21:03

Shoes, I saw the news about Darragh. We've just been through our fall storms here. Make sure to secure/remove/bring in any loose objects you can. Prepare for loss of power, etc. It's a good idea to have a cooler and ice blocks to keep food just in case power goes out. Stay safe. ❤️

Dandy, sounds nice. I haven't seen a lot of the traditional Christmas movies yet, but then again, I haven't turned on Prime/Netflix/Crave/Apple to check. It's going to be warmer today, 10c, but it's supposed to rain as well.
Have been sorting boxes and bins in closets and cleaning out dc's clothes. I've got one box of adult clothes and three children's for donation now. Storage closet is next.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 06/12/2024 21:16

Havoc DH went out the garden to secure some garden furniture and we have torches etc ready. Cos of DD we are on some sort of priority list for the power, but that just means they’ll look at us if the power is off too long and we need a generator or something, they can’t magically reconnect just our house to the grid 🤣.

DandyDandylion · 06/12/2024 21:24

We have a diabetic neighbour Shoes and when we had a prolonged power cut a few years ago the power company set up a generator and provided power to our small group of houses.
The winds are getting up a bit here but we are outside the red area so didn’t get the siren phone warning. Did have plans in the morning but think we will hunker down and stay put. We have solar panels and batteries so if we do get a power cut we can keep the heat and lights on.
Hope everyone stays safe, I feel like we need a roll call in the morning 🫣

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/12/2024 22:41

I'm 8 hrs behind here, so I'll likely post around bedtime to see how everyone is faring. 😊
I recall chat about this last year turned to generators. Miss has one, I think. I still haven't bought one.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/12/2024 23:17

Keep safe @ShoesOnFirstThenCar and @DandyDandylion

Been windy here today but nothing like the sound of Darragh

Penguinsn · 07/12/2024 00:08

Hope the storm isn't too bad for anyone close to it. We have to get DD back from Oxford tomorrow as end of term and will be lovely to have her back but definitely not ideal driving weather for DH. At least we are just in the up to 60mph winds and rain bit and it's an early collection.

Lovely pictures Havoc

Welcome back ZZ

Good things are progressing on kitchen MissC

Watching film about IVF on netflix set in 60s and 70s, very good so far.

I have been singing to Floof and he purrs when I sing or tries to join in at times but DH tried singing and Floof just looked terrified.

bizzey · 07/12/2024 00:49

Stay safe everyone who is in the storm path.
I am SE and the wind is a bit lively tonight here as well .

Nothing like what you must all be facing...but enough to be noisy !

Deathraystare · 07/12/2024 06:33

@bizzey

Oooh Bizzy does that mean a crumble with brandy and cherries in or a cherry brandy crumble??? I love cherry brandy. Used to buy a bottle on my birthday if I hadn't for Christmas.

I won';t buy a bottle Christmas time as there is only me and I am working all over Christmas but I will get lots of cherry brandy liquers, plus some violet creams from Lidl. Obvs not up to Charbonnel et Walker standard but they are ok. They also do some lovely dark chocolate discs with almonds on top which are lovely and crunchy.

It is our Christmas do at bookclub and the hostess is doing fish, roast spuds , cannot remember the veg but I do remember stollen being mentioned as well as Christmas pud and mulled wine.. We might gen on to discussing books, even!

Deathraystare · 07/12/2024 06:37

If you are all wondering why fish with roast spuds - two of us are pescatarian. One of us is allergic to dairy, two don't like peppers or tomatoes with skins on and one does not like ginger. I keep quiet that I don't really like sweet potato or butternut squash.

I am glad I do not have to do the cooking (no room for guests).

Heard the storm last night. Hopefully I do not think it will be too bad in London as I am shopping for tomorrow's thing.

I hope everyone else stays safe. There are always idiots on the road....

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/12/2024 07:09

Cat woke me up by the simple expedient of breathing on my eyeballs, so got up and put a soda bread in the oven. Just titting about on Mumsnet while it bakes then going to eat my body weight in breaded carbohydrates whilst continuing to tit on t'internet, probably Instagram for the cats doing stupid things. Happy Saturday morning, everyone.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 07/12/2024 08:20

Happy Saturday Morning :D

Youngest and I went to a nice Christmas gardening centre thing yesterday - he had the Dutch 'Sinterklaas' presents-giving on Thursday so he was off yesterday. It was very pretty and he got a dreadful dancing duck thingie that he's fallen in love with. It's tacky and the pre-recording is for a hen, so the damn thing dances and clucks, and he dances and clucks along with it. Can't stop laughing.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/12/2024 08:23

Yes, rotten conditions for driving Penguinsa. 60mph winds are serious. Safe drive to your dh.

@SardinesOnGingerbread mmm soda bread. I hope warm with lots of butter. 🤗

Dinner sounds nice Death. I like potatoes with fish.

So. It was night one of three for Taylor Swift concerts. I didn't know there were three or that this is the end of the tour. 🤷‍♀️
The news said the city had 700 police officers out for it; banned the "Tay-gating" and said not to go downtown to hang around the stadium if you didn't have a ticket. 🥱
So, it seems people stayed away. How very Vancouver.
How do I know you ask? Well, in true "I'm totally out of the loop 'cuz I've got two kiddos keeping me busy" I took them downtown late afternoon to walk around, look at Christmas lights and maybe go to the Christmas market if the rain held off. Much to my surprise I saw the Vancouver sign changed (see pics) a few other special light displays and people lined up to take pics.
We also looked at the Christmas window displays at Canada place as they maintain the old Woodward's window displays (will look for a link to explain). We did go to the market, walked around, bought us new toques, and hung out for a bit in Aspen house (the warming tent) where I tried to teach Havoc jenga (there's a games table) and we listened to stunningly poor karaoke to Taylor Swift songs... I'd never brave it, baby loved it and one guy was not bad, sang a 90's tune introducing it ad a Classic Christmas Song" (it wasn't a Christmas song) and just randomly added in the word Christmas which was funny. Santa was across the street for pics as part of a marketing event to a new development (looks amazing) so I had a pic with baby (Havoc wasn't keen), went to art gallery to look at the Christmas tree and saw a ferris wheel set up, another Taylor Seift display and a mini donuts truck; then the rain came, so I took up to Fat Burger before the drive home and Havoc had first milkshake ever. Oh, forgot about the lights along the seawall and pop-up music event, the very odd interpretive disco dancers, fire breathing dragon and light installation...
I don't think I've walked around and seen this much in a night in ages..

The Olympic flame cauldron was lit up red tonight. At Canada Place: Another Taylor Swift song reference in lights and two other displays for the holidays.

This was the Coal Harbour section of the seawall. It was quite pretty even though it was raining. Not many people out at all, the music tent and if you enlarge tou'll see the "dancers." One had a giant disco ball head. They danced really. Really. Slowly. 🤔

Wow, @Deathraystare, the standard of catering at your bookclub is impressive! We just have wine and snacks at ours, although some people are more ambitious and provide hot and cold snacks (we're in the non-heated-up crisps, nuts and olives camp when it’s our turn to host - much less faff). How many people are in the club?

Havoc, as ever I'm astonished by the number and variety of places in your vicinity that have amazing Christmas light displays (and your energy in going to see them!).

How's everyone affected by Storm Darragh faring? It’s lashing down with rain and blowing a gale here in the SE of the UK, and it’s supposed to be not too bad here. I’ve just been listening to them describing the path of the storm on the radio and the associated cancellation of large amounts of public transport, especially in Wales and the SW. DH and I had vaguely planned to go out for coffee to our favourite place, which is just a shortish walk up the road, but it's definitely a day to hunker down.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/12/2024 08:56

I tried to post the pics from the art gallery, but they won't load despite being under the size limit. 🤷‍♀️
So, I added a window display from Louis Vuitton at the Hotel Vancouver. 😁
It really was a fun day/evening with dc. I enjoy taking them out and Havoc loves downtown.

I hope the storm didn't cause much damage/trouble for anyone west/south-west. 🤞

Chucking it down here, but nit as windy as I expected. I'm still in bed, with a cup of tea and Radio 2. Always used to go to my mum's on Saturday mornings, so need to make a new routine. Funeral is on Monday.

Penguinsn · 07/12/2024 09:09

Love the dancing duck Duckling

Its so nice to see all your pictures Havoc glad you had a fun day out.

Heavy rain and 50mph winds here and DH is currently driving to Oxford where its worse than here but not as bad as South West / Wales.

I am very nervous about him driving in it but I don't drive and the car will be full with DD and her Oxford room coming back home (minus mini fridge which is allowed to stay). I got DH to ask DD if he could pick her up last night instead but she said she was partying and also would have been dark then so DH thought not much better.

Will watch rest of film Joy, its go such lovely clothes and period scenes and DD was IVF so is lovely to see. Really looking forward to DD being home.

So sorry Iwandered Hope the funeral goes as well as it can.

sproutsandparsnips · 07/12/2024 11:04

Sorry, loads to catch up on so may have missed some!
@Mumtobabyhavoc great pics as always, you go on some lovely trips!
@Penguinsn safe journey to DH and will be good to have DD home I expect. Glad you can get back in the pool. I was going to swim this morning but the pool is shut until later due to storm.
@MyrtleStrumpet sounds like a perfect couple of days!
@WearyAuldWumman @bizzey I am ashamed that no attempt has ever been made to clean inside our cooker.......
@Deathraystare sounds like the sort of book club I would like!
We are in the red alert area. I could hear everyone in the waiting rooms' phones going off last night and my boss phoned me in a panic to make sure I left as he had had an awful trip down the M4. Part of it is closed this morning. Wasn't too bad for me though as the rain had temporarily eased. So for nothing has blown down except the rugby posts.......
