Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

I take a magnesium supplement. It's best to take multiple chemical forms of it, so the one I take is a blend of magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, magnesium aspartate. Each has its own benefits.

Yesterday was a big day for the kitchen. The worktop blokes came, including the owner of the company, and installed the backsplash. They did a fantastic job. The wall over my sink had a bulge in it, so they took that section outside and polished it down so that it fit perfectly with the wall. The whole process took about three hours.

The plumber came in the afternoon and set up the water and drain for the sink and connected the stove to the propane line. I can cook again and no longer have to wash dishes in the bathroom sink! He ran out of time to hook up the dishwasher, and didn't know that we needed a water line run to the fridge for the ice maker, so he's coming back on Monday to do those. The electricians are coming back on Monday to turn on the power for the outlets in the backsplash and put their covers on. I will be fully back in the kitchen soon, hooray! Everything is out of the garage, so DH has his spot in there back and no longer has to park on the driveway. It's just in time, too, as we're expecting three inches of snow this afternoon.

The last picture was taken this morning, with the sink and stove in place. I was able to use the kettle this morning to make coffee. 😁

The apple butter sounds interesting. We have a bramley tree and have just had our last crumble of the season. The last few apples had gone past their best so jarring might get us a longer apple season. I think I need to retire and devote my life to things like this!
I take solgar multivitamins which contain different sources of magnesium. I also eat nuts and seeds most days which contain it. If I forget the vitamins I am much more prone to colds so I never forget for long.
The kitchen is really coming together now MissC not long to go. I see you went with painting the window frames to match the cabinets which looks great. I remember the feeling of cooking in my kitchen when it was all finished and exactly as I had planned. Enjoy.
We are all having a quiet weekend celebrating valentines with steak tonight. Doing tonnes of laundry as we go away on Monday for a midweek half term break.

bizzey · 15/02/2025 11:31

Thanks for all the magnesium tips ....I am making notes !

Kitchen is looking lovely MissC ..

I am tentatively feeling optimistic about this new cream GP has prescribed for me 🤞🤞..

Put it on twice yesterday and already this morning the redness is changing.

Still a long way to go ...but at least I am noticing a difference in my toe which I had before with the other medicated creams .

Originally I had thought the AB 's were making a difference...then I realised it was just the non medicated petroleum stuff that was quite soothing !!

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 15/02/2025 13:22

@MyrtleStrumpet well done on the models! I’m so impressed as i would not have the patience (or the eye sight), they look lovely tho.
@bizzey I take magnesium as it’s recommended for people with MS. It has definitely helped with cramps and also something called ‘clonus’ which is quite common in MS where my leg does something akin to Thumper the rabbit from Bambi when I wake in the morning 😁

I had to go for my annual MRI yesterday to check on progression (or not 🤞🏻) of the disease. The wait is currently very long in the nearest hospital so I was sent to another one, which has a mobile van in the car park for it 😮. (They also do it inside but this is to increase capacity I think). It was quite an experience going out to the car park in the rain, then into this vehicle which had the scanner in one part behind a steel door then a very narrow bit where the radiographer had his screen and a little seat for you to wait until the person in front was done. My coat and bag were stuffed into a little cupboard. Lots of fun!

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 15/02/2025 13:39

Sorry @MissConductUS for some reason my computer didn’t load the last page so missed the kitchen update. It looks fantastic. Hope you enjoyed your first coffee in your brand new kitchen

MyrtleStrumpet · 15/02/2025 14:33

I take magnesium at night to help me sleep.

I have finished the magic city booknook but I am waiting till tonight before I post pictures because I'd like to show you it at night with all the lights on.

In the meantime here is a sailing ship I built in 90 minutes. I have two models left: a cabin and Notre Dame Cathedral.

I was also clearing the box next to my desk and found some steel rods that may help me build my incomplete clock.

All these models look lovely, but I'm afraid my first thought was; how much dust to they attract? Or do you put them under protective domes?

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 15/02/2025 19:33

The kitchen looks absolutely lovely @MissConductUS Modern and stylish and very tasteful.

Gorgeous models @MyrtleStrumpet and it's amazing you finished the book nook so fast.

The book nook took about 35-40 hours. The sailing boat took 90 minutes and I completed the cabin in an hour. I think the cathedral will take 3-4 hours.

Booknook in daylight and cabin attached here.

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar ..interesting that you say Magnesium is good for clonus .
I am very aware of what it is as my brother has HSP as did my dad so I have seen it "in action" so to speak !

I will look into it for him .

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/02/2025 00:46

Did anyone do anything special for Valentine's Day? I braved taking both dc to school (Havoc didn't like that, I think as I had to deal with some poor behaviour), but after went to a cake shop I wanted to try and we shared a piece of cake (it was meh), then home for lunch, baby napped and then we went sledding. Managed to make it up to Mt. Seymour for the last of our lovely weather. It's been cloudy all day today.
I made a pan of brownies for dessert last night and decorated with some sprinkles. Served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Pics: brownies and view looking west from Iron Worker's Memorial Bridge on the drive home.

@bizzey i also take a prescribed med called Baclofen which is for spasticity in limbs so not sure whether one is helping the other, but I forgot the magnesium a while back and noticed the cramps in my feet did go up a notch. I just take bog standard Tesco stuff which is 375mg (and according to the label also has Vitamin B6 in it).

havoc what a lovely sunset pic. Have to confess not a huge fan of brownies but might make an exception if they have sprinkles on (we’d call them ‘100s and 1000s’ here).
Myrtle the book nook looks fab with the lights on. It all looks so intricate.

Quiet morning here, I’ve got the washing on and just filled the dishwasher so having a cup of tea (and a biscuit of course 😁) whilst they do their thing. DD is eating leftover pizza and watching YouTube.

HildaTablet · 16/02/2025 11:26

Kitchen looks great, MissC 👌👏👏

I take magnesium as advised by a specialist for my migraines - she told me to use magnesium malate but that’s specifically for that purpose. When I had my frozen shoulder I did sometimes use a magnesium spray, which may (or may not) have helped with pain relief.

DH and I both agreed to ignore Valentine's Day! It’s his birthday this month and he'll be getting a fairly expensive present - we're also going out a fair bit so feel we’re making up for it in other ways.

bizzey · 16/02/2025 15:30

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar ...he never got on well with Baclofen .

DandyDandylion · 16/02/2025 15:53

Love a brownie and with a coeliac DH it is an easy bake which I make regularly. We had steak for valentines. I sent dh to the local farm shop who raise their own cattle as I am too stingy to buy a decent cut. DS isn’t normally interested in shopping trips but decided to go. As DH was saying two of those ribeyes please he piped up with three. After some joshing about who was paying we did end up with three hefty steaks between the four of us and it was delicious. DS is into weight training so seems to think he needs lots of protein. He’ll need a decent job when he’s older to keep him in the manner to which he wishes to become accustomed.
I got out for a lovely walk this morning on my own whilst the rest of the house slept. Then I have done four lots of laundry and packed, though sure I have forgotten something.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/02/2025 17:42

What a great way to start the day, Dandy. I love a good steak. I so rarely eat beef, but do love it, actually.😛
Hilda, sort of every day is Valentine's, then? 😍
Shoes, another one starting the day quietly. As we should. 😊

I'm really interested in the magnesium discussion here m, so have been reading up. I've got my mum in it after chatting with her GP as my mum has Crohn's and had a bowel re-section, so, combined issues mean her body absorbs less nutrients and magnesium is one of them.
I recall reading recent studies are inconclusive about other uses, though, and that there was a lot of recos for taking it years ago. One big thing is to not take it if you also take certain meds, or take it well after during the day. It's quite an interesting topic.

Today was a bit of a flurry first thing. Got the dc changed, laundry in, dishwasher on then began making breakfast. Now on my 2nd latte, refereeing dc and scrolling mn a bit. 😂

@MyrtleStrumpet that is just magical. So intricate and so romantic. Brings a smile to my face just seeing the photos, it must be amazing in real life.

Thank you! It is very detailed. I made a tree house and a sailing boat yesterday from wooden models which were not as intricate. I started Notre Dame Cathedral today and was annoyed because the instructions were incorrect (told me to put B on the right and C on the left instead of vice versa). This meant I had to work out what was wrong and why. Which was fun. But it wasn't as much fun to dismantle bits and put them back together.

Which is a long way of saying I ordered another book nook as my usual models don't are not as intricate.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2025 04:00

Temp has gone up to 4c and it's raining. I just turned the heat off after getting out of the bath as it is too hot. 🥵

Havoc fell asleep on the couch after a bath and teeth were brushed. Baby is ready for bed, too, nursing, and likely will be asleep soon as well. 🤞
Plan is to watch the CNN doc on the Lockerbie plane tragedy. We'll see if I can manage it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2025 06:57

So, watched it. Bloody horror. In all ways. Watched some of it with tears. Didn't realize it was parts 1&2 tonight and continues/concludes next weekend.

Have now put the 90's Boy Band doc on again. Much needed.

MyrtleStrumpet · 17/02/2025 09:31

It was brutal, Havoc. Sending love. My university tutor was killed in the disaster and it turns out DH's family friend was also on the plane. It may sound odd but it was cathartic watching it, particularly because of the care taken of the victims by the people of Lockerbie and the professionals.

It was -0.5C last night when I got in around 10pm. Frosty start to the day, but the plumber came to look at the perpetually blocked upstairs toilet and found it was fine. DSD has had issues with putting wet wipes in the loo which we've stopped and finally we think she's worked out how to not block the loo.

I am so angry at her mother who didn't teach her basic skills as a child (like how much loo paper to wipe with) because she was premature and has disabilities. She would be much more capable if she had been given confidence to make mistakes and learn for herself. Instead she was treated as if she was completely helpless. It means a 30+ year old woman struggles so much. We literally have to tell her how to do these things. Her dad is brilliant and sensitive but we still don't know the full extent of the social damage that has been done to her.

MissConductUS · 17/02/2025 11:30

Myrtle, your models are truly amazing. I wouldn't have the patience or the time to do them.

We had about an inch of snow yesterday, which turned to rain—a lot of rain. So DH had to shovel slush off the driveway and deck. We took DS out to one of his favorite restaurants for a slightly late birthday dinner after doing a FaceTime with DD and dear SiL.

The electricians are coming in the morning, and the plumber is returning this afternoon. It's President's Day, which is a combined holiday for Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays. Two of our three cars are at the dealership for service. It's a good day to get them in, as none of us has to go to work today.

I noticed this huge flock of turkeys in the front yard just before we left for dinner. I think there were about 20. It's the largest flock I've ever seen. It's good to know they're surviving the winter.
