Yvette Cooper is a master at facts and figures and doesn't half show up Braverman.

Braverman: "The law abiding patriotic majority have said enough is enough. This Conservative gov will act now to stop the boats."
Cooper: "45,000 crossed on small boats last year, up from 280 four years ago. They have been in power for 13 years."

Apparently Yvette Cooper is posting on another thread about this today.

AdamRyan · 07/03/2023 22:17

Yvette Cooper is red hot on this and doesn't get half the time she deserves

itsgettingweird · 08/03/2023 06:31

Braverman and Cooper on Good morning Britain later. After 8 so unfortunately I'll be off to work but I'm sure it'll be interesting.

Fladdermus · 08/03/2023 07:29

I remember way back in the Big Dog glory days, when I mentioned how this tory government could strangle a puppy on live tv and their fan base would excuse it. This week we've learnt that they were genuinely planning on murdering kittens, not just one on live tv, every kitten in the country. And people are still defending them.

And now they've announced that they will from now on be allowing slavery in Britain (unless you're legal). And people are cheering them on. WRF is wrong with people?

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 07:40

I don't know Fladdermus. There is something really wrong. A couple of times recently I have been casually chatting to strangers and they have come out with something racist. They were white and I am white, so clearly they imagine all white people think like them.

But is not just the UK that is becoming more racist, is it? Other parts of Europe are seeing a rise?

Roussette · 08/03/2023 08:00

I've just seen Braverman interviewed on BBC Breakfast. She really is vile isn't she... the way she talks about human beings like that are cargo or bags of rubbish... she tries her best to humanise them, but she fails spectacularly. I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to decide whether it is her or Patel I dislike the most...

Now what about this new thread....

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 08:02

I hope you are OK jgw. That got really nasty over there.

jgw1 · 08/03/2023 08:24

Thank you for your concern. i thought it quite entertaining, although for the life of me I can't work out how pointing out the law can be racist.

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 08:34

Its strange that so many people are throwing their weight behind a law that doesn't exist and is unlikely to ever exist. There is no time table and no costing. Government legal advisors have described how it won't work. The President of the Law Society (well known lefty) has advised against trying to introduce it. Even the Times coverage illustrates how unworkable & impracticable it would be.

I dont think anyone with any knowledge of how long it takes to draft and implement legislation believes it will happen.

It exists only in the imagination of a few and to capture a news cycle.

It did make me wonder Sunak might plump for an earlier election. That way the nonexistant law can be their banner in the run up. Better that than get to the end of the year and they have achieved diddly squat.

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 08:35

It was just pure nastiness and rather bizarre.

Some people are rather scared of indisputable truths, but that is their problem.

Cornettoninja · 08/03/2023 08:45

The law abiding patriotic majority have said enough is enough. This Conservative gov will act now to stop the boats

I’m so sick of this rhetoric. Telling people what they should want despite thousands of informed and expert voices pointing out illegalities and point blank moral failings.

Suella gets the hump over Lineker comparing her to a nazi. Stop bloody behaving like one then you foul human.

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 08:48

It's a return (if they ever left) to ignore the experts and BeLeave.
That cost us 4% of GDP last time. Wonder how much this flight of fancy will rack up.

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 08:57

Asked by @bbcnickrobinson whether her policy to “stop the boats” will actually mean “no boats” by October 2024, @SuellaBraverman replies: “It will be very clear whether we have succeeded or not.”

That didn't sound like a 'yes'. But she's right it will be clear to voters.

Never going to happen. Total waste of Government and Parliament's time & money.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/03/2023 09:02

I've just seen that Sunak is planning to hold a press conference this evening to talk about immigration.
Last time the government were holding press conferences in the afternoon they were talking about covid and playing on fear to keep the population in line.

This won't have the same effect because people aren't under the same threat of life. He's just going to look like a twat trying to whip up hate.

I don't understand how they don't see it, are the civil service just giving them rope?

Roussette · 08/03/2023 09:11

I had to do it. I was getting nervous about no thread where I can pontificate, rant, and learn from likeminded people!

(Sorry about awful thread title)

'Ive just seen that Sunak is planning to hold a press conference this evening to talk about immigration

God no. I only realised that Sunak stood at a lectern with 'STOP THE BOAT PEOPLE' plastered across it... was real, when it was on breakfast news this morning. I saw it on Twitter and thought it was a parody up until now.

It reminds me of going to see DismalLand, Banksy's exhibition, and he had the boat people in it. Nothing has changed has it? This was 2015. The vile KHopkins had called them cockroaches at that point.

Another overpaid, under educated thicko inflames the discussion.

I thought they liked free speech?

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/03/2023 09:46

We know how unbiased the chair of the BBC is. I think it's more a case of how dare Linekar disagree with Richard Sharp. The BBC needs to tow the tory line and dissent from this will be punished.

Blossomtoes · 08/03/2023 10:06

Lineker’s really rattled them, hasn’t he? Go Gary.

Roussette · 08/03/2023 10:14

I have a lot of time for Gary Lineker. Yes he is in a privileged position but is very socially aware and has hosted Syrian refugees in his home, he walks the walk as well as talks the talk.

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 08/03/2023 12:57

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 09:43

That's not free speech, that's Hate Speech and smacks of anti-semitism. It's not acceptable.

Seventytwosunsetstrip · 08/03/2023 12:59

Blossomtoes · 08/03/2023 10:06

So you want to encourage anti-semitic rhetoric?
Really?
