There are times when I look back at Thatcher times almost with nostalgia. There was a much better legal aid system then, we weren't shipping refugees off to far-off states, and we didn't have bloody stupid academies competing with each other for ever more draconian school rules and ludicrous uniform requirements. And her government wasn't constantly losing judicial review claims for unlawful policies. She wouldn't even have got a seat at the table in Johnson's cabinet, woke wet liberal that she was.

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 16:12

I do too. Thank goodness nobody told us in the 80s that we’d got this to look forward to.

Thatcher had least believed what she was doing was for the good of most people.

The current lot don't even try and pretend that.

@jgw1
You've gone all serious again. Please don't, I start to worry.

I fear the situation has reached a point where the humour has left.

I think they sent the Humour to Rwanda as it seemed to dangerously foreign.

I have a lovely little fantasy in which Truss finds herself in Downing Street on 5 September, looks at the shitshow she’s inherited and instantly calls a general election, failing to notice she’s chosen a polling day a week after the energy cap goes up.

Well I am sure JRM and others who have said that it is what should happen will be urging her to do just that.

I’ve had the electoral thing checking whose eligible to vote in the house through today. In my mind they do that when they’re expecting to have to send out polling cards soon.

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 18:32

I thought they updated the electoral register every year. We had our reminder in June.

DuncinToffee · 08/08/2022 18:34

We got ours last week.

Cornettoninja · 08/08/2022 18:35

Do they @Blossomtoes? Can’t say I’ve ever noticed.

There goes my theory Grin

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 18:36

Shame, I like your theory and it gave me no pleasure to piss all over it. 😂

We gonna need a new thread soon...

'Thatcher had least believed what she was doing was for the good of most people'

Ah yes good old Maggie who didn't decimate mining communities at all, oh nooo she was doing what was for 'the good of most people'. Bit like when she sold off the council houses too, all for the good of most people. Lovely <misty eyed>.

cakeorwine · 08/08/2022 19:10

New thread.

At least this thread keeps its promises.

That reminds me. Dd is 18 next month, we have to register her asap.

I had a shock this morning when she said she has no idea of how are electoral system works. I feel a crash course coming up.
