Just re-listening to Cabin Pressure with 10 yr old DS, who has got really into it, and whenever the theme starts comes up and says "the lemon is in play"!

I'm feeling a bit shit today so was wondering what everyone's favourite episodes are, mine are .....

The one with the orchestra
St Petersburg.... in fact anyone where they get it over on Gordon
Berling Day
The one where they pick up Theresa of Lichtenstein for the first time

But they are all bloody great really aren't they??

St Petersburg is an interesting episode - when the goose strikes the engine, Douglas offers to land the plane but Martin says he'll do it and Douglas says "OK, Captain" without any sarcasm. And as Theresa has heard many times, he does. Successfully. They are all working together in that episode towards a common goal.

I love that sequence. You get to see the two of them working together in a genuine crisis, captain and first officer. You get reminded that Douglas is genuinely an excellent pilot as he runs through the engine shutdown checklist while calling Martin "Captain". And then you have the switch back to Martin and Douglas when Douglas asks Martin if he wants him to take the landing, and Martin says, without panic that he'll do it, and Douglas simply says "okay". Something he would have never said in the beginning of their relationship.

[[https://johnfinnemore.blogspot.com/2014/12/farewell-bear-facts-st-petersburg.html?m=1 This is John Finnemote

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 02/06/2022 10:22

Dammit! Prev post arsed up.

This is John Finnemore's blog post about St P, where he specifically discusses that Martin/Douglas exchange, and how the shift between "Captain" and "Martin" signifies what has changed between them.

I also love that I think Douglas is genuinely angrier at Gordon for being such a shit dad to Arthur than he is for the "sticky fingers" crack. JF wrote in his post on Zurich about how Douglas's journey is to step up as a good dad of this metaphorical family, and not always hang back with a snide crack.

A great thread! It's my favourite programme and I have had a crush on JF for years despite not really knowing what he looks like.

I think Douz was the one that got me hooked. Love the airport controller

"I can think of no words to describe a Fire Truck better than Fire Truck"

"I think I've made my point"
"You've made it, I've ignored it, I am going to do nothing about it"

And my username of course!

"You've made it, I've ignored it, I am going to do nothing about it"
I love shoving this into an argument with DH Grin

Also "only Father Christmas cares about what you want" which is from ... one of the early ones?

“He’s a smooth talking old smarm pot who thinks he’s the best thing to happen to the sky since rainbows”.

I’m ashamed to say that listening to Douglas being all masterful during the bird strike does give me a touch of the F. Gallops 🫣😂.

Is this a piece of your beard?

Snorklette · 02/06/2022 13:42

Ps thank you to those making other suggestions! I’ve got all those suggested so far but keep them coming to try and plug my CP void 😁.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/06/2022 13:52

“Salt! Salt! Only with salt!”

Overall my favourites are Ipswich and Limerick but the characterisation in Gdansk is brilliant.

The first time I listened to Cabin Pressure was on my commute and I would frequently be weeping with laughter. Introduced DH and DS to it; they’ve introduced all their friends to it…we can all quote it off by heart. There are SO many Cabin Pressure moments in my life 😂 Just yesterday, DS and I saw a cherry -picker - “Well, at least they’re using that and not a widow-maker” we said in unison!

Roger Allam is my fantasy dad.

Is everyone here aware of the wildly exciting fact that John Finnemore is co-scriptwriter on Good Omens series 2?

Coming later this year.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/06/2022 14:22

I'm not sure I did know that GERTI but it makes me very, very happy Smile

I'm another one who feels it would be like picking a favourite child.

We've met JF a couple of times and he's been bloody lovely both times. Dd is immensely happy about her interaction with him on Twitter when he was, of course, lovely.

cakeorwine · 02/06/2022 14:22

Johanesburg is great for characters again.

Martin and Arthur having a 'holiday' and having to problem solve by themselves.
Douglas trying to negotiate to save money and Carolyn just commentating from the sidelines.

Martin coming back so confident....until they start the engine

Cockwomblingfree · 02/06/2022 14:36

Xinzhou - fizz buzz have a banana.
Johannesburg - sugar brick, inner womble, rabbit of negative euphoria.
Gdansk - Potters Gran.

Love the shoutout to Mrs Badcrumble in one of them. Although it makes me sadly nostalgic for the days when Eddie Izzard was a genuinely laugh until you’re crying funny ‘bloke in a dress’.

I'm resurrecting this thread a bit so we can make our stuffed sheep jokes here rather than annoying the OP of the thread.

piratehooker · 13/06/2022 09:50

I had to give my car registration to someone over the phone yesterday, and as usual thought it was sensible to use the phonetic alphabet, to avoid the whole

'N?'

'No, M. Mmmm. Muh. For... Marmite!'

debacle. But I've listened to Limerick far too recently, so my versions were pretty much Arthur-based and not official. The poor bloke, trying to decipher my bumbling attempts at simplifying things.

"Tango!"

"No! The phonetic alphabet for 'F' is not 'Tango'!"

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/06/2022 10:12

What a great thread! Ipswich, but the whole series is marvellous. JF is a genius.

cakeorwine · 13/06/2022 20:16

It's quite amusing to hear Martin's annoyance everytime the Captain gets introduced and they all think it's Douglas.

I saw that thread and barely restrained myself.

AquaticSewingMachine · 13/06/2022 20:28

Also, I just relistened to Abu Dhabi in a spirit of inquiry and it's genuinely hilarious how slow and restrained Cumberbatch is in doing the outro compared to the S4 episodes.

We listened to CP on a long drive recently and rather to my surprise my 7yo fell headlong in love with it. Both kids now also adore declaring "this has been a Pozzitive Production for the BBC!"

AdmiralsPie · 13/06/2022 20:36

DD sent this to the family chat just today. Sharing in case anyone else needs help imagining 100 otters. I swear our family communicate more through quoting Cabin Pressure than real conversation.

110APiccadilly · 14/06/2022 07:14

@AquaticSewingMachine I believe CP, and John Finnemore in general, have been a bit of a suprise hit with a lot of kids! Certainly when we went to see him live, the audience had a lot of kids in. Partly I suspect that he's one of the relatively few comedians who aim their work towards adults but who's not unsuitable for children (no one's going to take their 9 year old to Frankie Boyle - at least I hope not) and rarely political (which, for most children, isn't that funny).

OMG, is this true??? This is IMMENSE news.

I would struggle to pick a favourite episode, but if forced it would probably be Kilkenny. I have used "only Father Christmas cares about what you want, I am telling you what you are going to do" on my children countless times.

My DC adore CP now too. The Chinese one with the snow that I can't spell is their favourite.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/06/2022 07:47

Not Kilkenny. Uskerty.
