RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/05/2022 17:52

Just re-listening to Cabin Pressure with 10 yr old DS, who has got really into it, and whenever the theme starts comes up and says "the lemon is in play"!

I'm feeling a bit shit today so was wondering what everyone's favourite episodes are, mine are .....

The one with the orchestra
St Petersburg.... in fact anyone where they get it over on Gordon
Berling Day
The one where they pick up Theresa of Lichtenstein for the first time

But they are all bloody great really aren't they??

OP posts:

They’re all epic. I had a proper guffaw yesterday listening to Herc introduce his first officer: “Caps, this is Linda, Linda these are some chaps.”

Always have a soft spot for Douz because John Sessions is so funny.

But yeah. All of them. DD is 9, she listens to an episode every night before bed.

My nephew has a t-shirt with a row of red cars and one yellow and the slogan “Always Playing”

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 31/05/2022 19:14

Pick a favourite? No way. We are in the middle of introducing DS (11). Who now finally knows why we are always playing yellow car.
My username is not the first I have had to reflect my love of CP.

Isthisjustnormal · 31/05/2022 19:17

Yup, Ottery St Mary for me. If you have audible they are available on there too. Although each series counts as a full ‘buy’ so it’s not a cheap way to acquire them!

Ottery St Mary for me, as much for Herc and Carolyn's date as for the main plot.

I particularly like when she discovers Herc is a vegetarian and then orders a platter of Whitebait. "Twenty little lives!"😁

DownToTheSeaAgain · 31/05/2022 19:27

In their own way they are all perfection. I love Limerick, Ottery st Mary and the Q one best. But they are all the best thing to have happened on radio. Ever.

crumpet · 31/05/2022 19:27

Carolyn is GLORIOUS

DoorLion · 31/05/2022 19:30

I’m posting before reading the thread so I don’t get swayed by other people. My favourites are:
Xinzhou
Limerick
Uskerty

I could add loads of others that I also love but those just about pip the post.

My least favourites are Cremona and Helsinki.

Have just come back from seeing Dr Strange, isn’t Martin doing well for himself.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 31/05/2022 19:30

I've been waiting my whole life at least 5 years to be asked this question.

-St Petersburg. Because of the conversation between Martin and Douglas after the bird strike, and the sheer joy and relish of Douglas's revenge on Gordon for hurting Arthur. "Do you find you have... STICKY FINGERS?"

  • Ottery St Mary. "You guys. I can't say no to you."
  • Ipswich. Because DH once nearly drove off the road from laughing when I introduced him to it, and one of us still only has to say "Hey... chief...." to the other to induce helpless giggles.
  • Xinjiang. 'Ave a banana!
CreamyBruley · 31/05/2022 19:30

I think Zurich for me. Just for that moment they had off to Addis Abbaba and for a second you hope it might not be the end.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 31/05/2022 19:36

Oh. I left off Qikiktarjuaq which is also a joy. Mostly because of Benedict doing the outro in his 'orrible French accent. And then the glorious culmination of it all when he does his cabin address at the end of Zurich as Premier Officer... Martin du Creff.

The smarm-off between Herc and Douglas gets an honourable mention. As does Uskerty. "You know, between the dames and the horses, some day I just don't know why I put my hat on."

If you have not already, everyone should read the Farewell Bear Facts about each episode on John Finnemore's blog.

HappyCup · 31/05/2022 19:41

Love Cabin Pressure!

I only noticed on my second or third listening to it though that there’s one episode (Newcastle?) with a different actor playing Martin. He sounds so like BC that I didn’t notice at first!

Snorklette · 31/05/2022 19:46

I have found my people! No one I know in RL knows what I’m talking about . I have listened to them all, so, so many times and I am totally in love with Douglas😂. Love “remember, otters may shift in transit” and no life jackets “because otters can swim”. Also love Theresa, “my BMW is hurt!” and often find myself saying “Le Bear Polar!” Too many favourite bits to quote. If only I could find something else as good to listen to… the closest I’ve got is Deep Trouble Series 2.

110APiccadilly · 31/05/2022 19:53

All of them!

I nearly quoted Ipswich in a particularly awful work training session on how to deliver feedback the other day, but thought better of it - not sure it would have gone down well. "This makes me feel... scared of the mountain."

Mind you, that program literally nearly killed me. Not long after we were married, I introduced DH to it on a long car journey. At one point he laughed so much he gave himself an asthma attack and nearly crashed the car!

110APiccadilly · 31/05/2022 19:57

For those who like Douglas, there's a rather sweet radio programme with Roger Allam and Joanna Lumley called Conversations from a Long Marriage where I think he gets to deliver some fairly Douglas-sounding lines. Though it might just be that to me, Roger Allam just always sounds like Douglas.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 31/05/2022 19:58

It has to be the one where the police stop Arthur in the ice cream van and ask what's in the back. "Oh, that's easy, a thousand strawberry lollies and the Princess of Lichtenstein" 😂 😂

comfortablyfrumpy · 31/05/2022 20:20

All of them.
But, if pressed, Ipswich. Just perfect.

I regret not downloading them when they were available on Sounds. But have bought on Audible and working my way through......

OnlyLosersTakeTheBus · 31/05/2022 20:26

I can't help but think the Vanity Fair photographer is a fan of Uskerty: www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/02/benedict-cumberbatch-2022-hollywood-portfolio

"That’s right. That’s my truck full of swans. They can’t get enough swans in Kilkenny."

LyndaSnellsSniff · 31/05/2022 20:31

Ottery St Mary followed by Ipswich.

Douglas's monologue about the patron saint of otters makes me weep every single time. And the quiches in Ipswich. 😄

I just watched an episode of Location, Location, Location which showed the Ottery St Mary town sign. I paused it and called in the DCs who cheered! 😆

I'm not so keen on Helsinki or the one with Hester the famous actress.

Did anyone follow JF's live Twitter comment-a-thon a couple of years back when Radio 4 played them again?

ArticSaviour · 31/05/2022 20:32

All of them. But the moment when Martin says 'allo in his tentative French accent in Qi-can't spell it - is just the funniest ever.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 31/05/2022 20:37

I also like Wokingham when Martin's mum says she doesn't want to be any trouble and he replies with "that's the beautiful irony".

Also, "uuuuppp we go!" from Martin's brother.

TerrifiedandWorried · 31/05/2022 20:47

Here I am, don't tread on me

barneymcgroo · 31/05/2022 20:51

If anyone's looking to listen, my local library Libby app has series 1 and 2 available to download.

Oh, they're all sublime. As was latest series of JFSP.

devildeepbluesea · 31/05/2022 20:51

@Snorklette oh Deep Trouble is great too. My other recommendation is Reluctant Persuaders. The whole thing is in BBC Sounds, it’s really good.

IWouldBeSuperb · 31/05/2022 20:58

You can guess my favourite episode from my username!

"Of COURSE I should do it...' 😂

Although it's really impossible to choose - the whole series is genius and I still get emotional during Zurich every time!

Snorklette · 31/05/2022 21:01

This thread is brilliant! (Kind of a pun intended 😂). It’s making me laugh just reading all the quotes. “It’s our plane and the wings are on it. That’s good enough for me”. “There’s an Arthur stuck to it”. And the one I often quote at work, “now that was, I agree, a bit unprofessional”. @devildeepbluesea I’ll check that one out - thank you!
