Travel from Dublin airport to Kilkenny - Uber?

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 12/06/2022 17:52

im travelling at short notice to a family event, car hire cost is outrageous presently. Is getting an Uber at Dublin straightforward? Or should I look at booking a Dublin taxi firm?

Maybe get a bus from Dublin Airport to Kilkenny and then get a taxi for the final part (or get a relative to collect you from the bus). I suspect a taxi for the whole journey would be a LOT.

Marmite27 · 12/06/2022 17:55

Granted I’ve never been from Dublin to Kilkenny, but I’ve done other places from Dublin - is there no coach service? That’s what we’ve always used if no one can collect us from the airport.

youwouldthink · 12/06/2022 17:58

There are buses from the city every hour or so to KK. Price of a taxi would be crazy expensive

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/06/2022 18:05

Dublin Coach goes every two hours (on the even hour) for €10.

JJ Kavanagh also do a Dublin Airport to Kilkenny service, it takes longer though as it goes through the centre of Dublin.

If you do get a taxi it would probably work out cheapest and most reliable to book a Kilkenny firm to pick you up. I think if you take a taxi off the rank they might not even want to drive that far. Only registered taxis can take paying passengers, I don't think we have that sort of Uber here (there's Uber Eats which delivers takeaways, but I haven't heard of Uber for passengers).

purplecorkheart · 12/06/2022 18:08

I would take the journey by coach. The cost of fuel here is insane (like everywhere else). You probably will find taxi drivers will refuse the fare as metre charge has not kept up with price of fuel. Uber does not really exist in Ireland at present.

SolasAnla · 12/06/2022 18:13

The estimate says
€242.40 - €326.60

www.transportforireland.ie/fares/taxi-fare-estimator/

If you go into the menu it has a trip planner or Dublin airport has a list of bus options.

LadyEloise1 · 12/06/2022 19:39

I don't think there's Uber in Ireland.

Cuddlywuddlies · 12/06/2022 19:56

A train or bus would be way way cheaper

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 13/06/2022 08:25

Flight lands too late for a bus. I’ve used one before, they are great but timing won’t work.

What time will you be kerb side? This lists a 2:00 and 5:30 departure time:

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 13/06/2022 10:09

Thank you for the links, there is a chance I might the 2345. However event starts early next day

Is Uber really not an option, on the app currently it’s showing cars from the airport “6 minutes away” with fare €130 - €170

honeyrider · 13/06/2022 10:19

What time does your flight land?

So many flights are arriving late so you may not have as long a wait for a bus.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 13/06/2022 10:29

I'd be shocked if a mytaxi or Uber or freenow or whatever the latest one is (can you tell I don't get out much) would make that trip without being prebooked

HydraWater · 13/06/2022 10:35

The journey at that time at night is just over an hour or so. Is there no possibility of a relative or friend doing you a massive favour and picking you up?

If not, the bus mentioned by Solas Anla above might work.

Uber does not exist in Ireland, however the app "Free Now" works in a similar way.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 14/06/2022 19:35

Flight lands at 2045

Ireland is going through a terrible taxi shortage right now.

Muppetryofthepenis · 15/06/2022 08:39

No uber in Ireland

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2022 10:15

Have you had a look at Fleet? They were talking about it on the radio yesterday. They hire out spare cars, eg private cars that people aren't currently using or cars sitting on a forecourt.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 15/06/2022 11:43

I think there's an Uber app but they're taxi's not ubers.

GallopingGreen · 15/06/2022 16:52

There are no "ubers" in Ireland. I think the Uber app in Ireland is used just for licensed taxis- so won't be cheaper.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 16/06/2022 10:09

Thanks everyone, I’ve booked a private hire from Kilkenny to collect me, €150 and bagged a lift back

OP posts:
Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 16/06/2022 10:15

Fleet looks good but hours wouldn’t suit as arriving late. Would consider that for another time. Car hire is incredibly expensive

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/06/2022 10:24

The car hire thing is an absolute shit show. They sold off a lot of their older cars during lockdown and didn't replace them because they didn't know when lockdown would be over. Then suddenly lockdown was over but now there is a huge wait time for new cars. It's not just the hire companies, regular people buying a brand new car need to be prepared to wait at least six months, and I have two friends who have been without their cars for over a month because replacement parts to fix cars aren't coming through either.

Nessylink · 16/08/2023 23:55

Hiya, @Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom I know this is an old threas, but wondering how the transport worked out in the end and if you would recommend the KK taxi service? My mother is flying into Dublin and I'm looking for a backup plan in case I'm unable to collect her (she's in her 70s so I'd prefer not to have her use the coach with several suitcases, etc)
