Just re-listening to Cabin Pressure with 10 yr old DS, who has got really into it, and whenever the theme starts comes up and says "the lemon is in play"!

I'm feeling a bit shit today so was wondering what everyone's favourite episodes are, mine are .....

The one with the orchestra
St Petersburg.... in fact anyone where they get it over on Gordon
Berling Day
The one where they pick up Theresa of Lichtenstein for the first time

But they are all bloody great really aren't they??

I love them all but probably my favourite is Ottery....and Ipswich. Least favourite: Qiqitarkjuak (because I don't think Douglas would really do such risky manoeuvres) and the one where the American has a heart attack (Boston?) because Martin seems a bit cruel!

Have you listened to the latest Souvenir Programme? That was amazing. Love Double Acts too....JF if you ever read this, thank you!! And please write some more....

SnotMikeUpPuffedHe · 01/06/2022 19:59

I'm just relistening to Xinzhou.

I can't believe I forgot "Martin, is this your street way of telling me you think there's a policeman on the plane?"

Fuckoffeverything · 01/06/2022 20:00

The Lemon! Grin oooh and the Tallisker one...

I've realised I do have a least favourite. Sorry, but I don't like Boston. There's something a little more genuinely vicious about it somehow. I like to think JF was still working out the tone and hadn't quite found it at that point.

HeritageVegetable · 01/06/2022 20:19

I don't like Cremona. The family hasn't yet gelled.

comfortablyfrumpy · 01/06/2022 20:19

Just had Ipswich on while I had dinner. Absolutely and utterly wonderful.

HeritageVegetable · 01/06/2022 20:26

Ipswich is flawless.

Yes, I think he really hits his stride in Douz.

barneymcgroo · 01/06/2022 20:34

Oh @HappyCup, thank you! Now subscribed to Cumberbin's treasure, and I'll give my husband a heads up, as he has a 4hr journey tomorrow...

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 01/06/2022 20:39

Yeah I listened to Douz today, and it's noticeable how awkward the four of them still are with each other compared to where they get to. It's also the first time Carolyn confesses the dire state of the finances to Douglas. I think Boston and Cremona are the weakest in the series, but a series that is still in every way wonderful.

cakeorwine · 01/06/2022 20:45

I do like Arthur in Boston.

"Fire's out"

Mr Leeman is the name of the person who died in "The Kipper" in Fawlty Towers.

There's an interesting article on how the audience changed in Series 3 when BC became more well known

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/mar/27/how-we-made-cabin-pressure-benedict-cumberbatch

110APiccadilly · 01/06/2022 20:48

I'm surprised at the number of you who don't like Cremona. I think it's got some brilliant moments.

"I have two fluffy dressing gowns, in case one of them goes wrong."

"I have things to pack."
When Martin points out they've only just got there - "I didn't say they were my things."

Also love the scene with Arthur and the actress, and Carolyn giving her what-for afterwards - "May I congratulate you on the hard-line way you dealt with the menace?"

And Douglas riding up and down in the lift so he can plan his speech to end at the exact right moment.

I've been waiting my whole life at least 5 years to be asked this question.

-St Petersburg. Because of the conversation between Martin and Douglas after the bird strike, and the sheer joy and relish of Douglas's revenge on Gordon for hurting Arthur. "Do you find you have... STICKY FINGERS?"

  • Ottery St Mary. "You guys. I can't say no to you."
  • Ipswich. Because DH once nearly drove off the road from laughing when I introduced him to it, and one of us still only has to say "Hey... chief...." to the other to induce helpless giggles.
  • Xinjiang. 'Ave a banana!

Absolutely and exactly this. My favs too and for exactly these reasons… I’ve been feeling a bit blue today and this has reminded me that CP always lifts my mood and makes me smile…

cakeorwine · 01/06/2022 21:35

I think there's one bit in Ipswich where Douglas breaks character. It's when he is using his "Hey Chief" line on Carolyn.

"Hey Chief, I might be wrong", then he breaks into a laugh, "Sorry, I really must learn to say that with a straight face" (I think that was unscripted and was Roger himself" -

OnlyLosersTakeTheBus · 01/06/2022 21:52

Ipswich has some classics:

"There's Camembert?! We never get any Camembert!" Because Roger Allam really sounds annoyed, as if he never gets the Camembert.

"DOUGLAS: Carolyn, we have a complaint.
CAROLYN: Oh dear me. Tell you what, why don't you write it down, put it in an envelope, tear it in half, throw it away and shut your face."

"One is the correct dosage of quiche for the adult human male!"

In the extra interview in the box set CD JF says that during recording of Ipswich BC and Phil Davis were talking about doing the pilot for Sherlock together and how they were waiting to re-film it - and he asked who BC was playing in it.

cakeorwine · 01/06/2022 21:58

There's 500 seats in this lecture hall.

Yes, some of which are at the back

And the 'other pilots' at MJN - Marvin and Dougal

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 01/06/2022 22:07

Up! Down! Flying around!

KingscoteStaff · 01/06/2022 22:11

And not just any old hoots. Low and reverent hoots, like an owl at a Jubilee.

What sort of a team would your ex-girlfriends be? Hmmmm. Well, you know the start of the London Marathon?

Wow! It’s an actual castle!
What did you expect Verduz Castle to be?
I don’t know. World of Leather was very disappointing.

Do you get a lot of assassins in your airport?
We do in the winter months. I think the cold drives them inside.

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 02/06/2022 07:35

HappyCup · 31/05/2022 21:37

They’re all available for free as a podcast if you search ‘Cumberbin’s Treasure’.

Thank you so much, @HappyCup! I had the whole set on CDs, which I carefully transferred to my laptop before my daughter took them away to uni with her and returned the boxes empty, but iTunes managed to shuffle the CDs/episodes out of all recognition, so I've not been able to listen to whole episodes for years! I can't tell you how grateful I am to have those on podcasts! I'm going to listen to them whilst having my daily swim, something to look forward to!

Thank you, too, @RozHuntleysLeftHand, for starting this thread. I don't have such a comprehensive recollection of each episode as many here do, but I intend to get there! Anything with lemons or yellow cars really makes me laugh, but I'm not a fan of the Birling episodes. Which was the one when Arthur (I assume) gets a part of him frozen to the outside of the aircraft? (Or did I imagine that, it is wholly possible, given my advanced stage of doolallyness?)

cakeorwine · 02/06/2022 09:09

Which was the one when Arthur (I assume) gets a part of him frozen to the outside of the aircraft

St Petersburg. There's something wrong with the aircraft. It has an Arthur stuck to it.

SnotMikeUpPuffedHe · 02/06/2022 09:30

D: How's Arthur?

C: Sore-lipped and accidentally drunk.

A: Should just stop being hurting now!

C: I can see the hours are going to fly by on gilded wings!

cakeorwine · 02/06/2022 09:40

St Petersburg is an interesting episode - when the goose strikes the engine, Douglas offers to land the plane but Martin says he'll do it and Douglas says "OK, Captain" without any sarcasm. And as Theresa has heard many times, he does. Successfully. They are all working together in that episode towards a common goal.

cakeorwine · 02/06/2022 09:41

Cabin Pressure was a subject on Mastermind

SnotMikeUpPuffedHe · 02/06/2022 09:51

St Petersburg is, in my opinion, a massive turning point in Martin and Douglas's relationship and it's all there in that conversation.

Douglas calls Martin 'captain', and although he offers to land Gerti for him, when Martin says he'll do it, Douglas doesn't argue that he'd be better (although possibly he would be). Martin lands the plane well, and gets the boost to his confidence he needs from that.

After this episode, although there is still the teasing and bickering between them, they have really properly gelled as a team (or even family) and there is far more of them working together, even if often foiled by Arthur's attempts to help (Timbuktu). Also there's the change in Carolyn's relationship to Martin as she tells him that she hates not being able to pay him (Uskerty), and although Douglas still teases Martin I think he becomes a lot less undermining, especially about his love life (Vaduz, Xinzhou). He's still quite scathing about Martin's piloting ability in Xinzhou, but when Martin gets the Swiss Air job at the beginning of Zurich 1, he's genuinely pleased for him. And, actually, maybe Douglas's comments about Martin's flying aren't unjustified, given that Martin says in Yverdon-les-bains that his biggest weakness is that he's not very good at flying planes. (This of course is before we discover that Gerti is partly made of gold.) Even Douglas and Arthur's relationship becomes on more of an even footing when they're alone in Uskerty I think.

Sorry, I've thought about this a lot.

cakeorwine · 02/06/2022 09:58

Vaduz is funny with Douglas, Martin - wearing his medals and Theresa. You've come like a little Christmas tree.
