Our verdict

Our tester Kate used the Babybjörn Crib with her three-month-old over several weeks, during which time she found plenty to like about it. Her baby settled very well from the first night, and the breathable mesh sides as well as the flush-fitting mattress gave her confidence that he was sleeping in a safe environment.

Like any parent, my number one priority is that my baby is safe, and the airy and breathable mesh panels and flush-fitted mattress gave me that peace of mind.

She also really appreciated the crib's minimalist design. The crib's main selling point, of course, is that it isn't just another newborn crib (most of which can only be used until a baby is around six months old or 9 kg) with its adjustable height setting meaning that families can continue to use the crib until their child is around two years old.

However, it doesn't come cheap - the crib's £400+ price tag makes it a considerable purchase, one where you would expect a few more standout features other than style and longevity. For Kate, the crib's lack of rocking feature, no incline for reflux and no drop-down side for ease of reaching the baby made it a less practical option than other cribs on the market. While she would happily recommend it for parents who prioritise design, safey and longevity, she felt that in terms of value for money, it wasn't quite there.

How we tested the Babybjörn Baby Crib

Mumsnet tester Kate used the Babybjörn Baby Crib as her three-month-old son's main bed over a testing period of several weeks. It was used as a bedside crib next to Kate's bed in her bedroom.

How easy is the crib to set up and use first time?

Kate reported that the crib was "fairly simple" and took around 10 minutes total to assemble. She pointed out that it was a bit of a fiddle to attach the top of the crib to the base.

Does the crib feel sturdy and safe?

This is one of the most reassuring elements of the Babybjörn crib, with Kate pointing out that the materials of the crib's stand made it feel incredible stable for her baby.

The air and breathable mesh panelling gives you the peace of mine that your baby is safe and as the panelling is see-through, it allows you to have great visibility of the baby.

Does the crib have any standout features?

Although the crib's 2-in-1 design means that it can be used beyond the newborn stage, this is probably its main standout feature. Unlike many of its competitors, it doesn't have a rocking mechanism and there aren't multiple height settings to adjust for reflux.

I do feel like this is where the crib is lacking - a rocking feature would have been a great 'nice to have' feature. There are no other specific standout features which does make the RRP quite steep for what you get.

Does it work as a bedside crib?

While the crib did fit comfortably next to her bed, Kate felt that as a bedside crib it wasn't perfect.

It's not level with our mattress like some bedside cribs are, and there are no pull-down sides for easy access to the baby. It still serves well as a bedside crib, but not as well as others on the market.

Does the crib feel comfortable?

Yes, Kate appreciated the crib's comfort levels, pointing out that her baby settled quickly every night.

How adjustable is it?

There are two mattress height positions with the BabyBjörn Baby Crib. Kate found switching between the two fairly straightforward, although she occasionally needed to check the manual to remind herself of the process.

Once lowered, the mattress sits very close to the floor. Without a drop-down side, bending down to lift a growing baby-then-toddler in and out could become uncomfortable over time.

How portable is the crib?

While Kate has only used the crib in her own bedroom, she pointed out that "it's easy enough to move when we have needed to." Having said that, "I don't think it's practical to use as a travel crib as there are too many parts to travel with once dismantled, and it doesn't come with a storage bag."

How does this crib compare to others?

Kate said that she previously used a Snuzpod (the Snuzpod 3) with her older child, and while the Babybjorn offers a more spacious and breathable sleep environment, she did prefer the latter.

In comparison, the Snuzpod is my preference as it has a rocking feature, storage pockets and a zip down panel to easily access the baby. It also has multiple heights you can adjust it to so it fits level with your mattress.

Kate also used the Babybjörn Baby Cradle as a comparison, and pointed out that the crib was better due to its greater longevity, "it's bigger and your baby won't outgrow it so fast, so I prefer the crib."

Would you recommend the Babybjörn Baby Crib to other parents?

In terms of its design, Kate said that she would. "It has served as a safe, yet beautifully designed crib which is also practical and will grow with your baby."

Can the crib really be used for up to two years?

This was a feature where Kate found her two-year-old daughter a helpful comparison.

I would say this is an accurate claim as my 27-month-old daughter also fitted in the crib perfectly well when adjusted to the lower setting.

Does the Babybjörn Crib represent good value for money?

All in all, Kate felt that the steep RRP of the crib was not fully justified by its features.

While the crib will last until your child is two-years-old and has a gorgeous Scandi design which is airy and breathable, the price is relatively steep considering there are no unique features. I would say you are paying for the brand and the look/design of the crib rather than its practicality.

Bottom line?

While she really loved the look, well-made design and longevity of the BabyBjörn Baby Crib, Kate couldn't get past the cost vs what you actually get.

Other than the safety and Scandi design of this crib, there are no other real features that would justify the price.

That said, she did point out that the safety features of the crib and the fact her baby settled so well in it was a "very big win" and would still recommend it to other parents.
