”BREAKING: The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, has this week met with the Darlington nurses and said he is committed to the belief that sex is biological being reflected in the day-to-day running of the NHS under his watch. The nurses, who are being supported by the Christian Legal Centre, also handed in a CitizenGo petition signed by 48,000 people to Number 10 Downing Street calling for the government to do whatever is necessary to ensure women have access to single-sex changing rooms and toilets. The meeting followed a statement Mr Streeting made in the lead up to the General Election in June when he said on X/Twitter that he was ‘horrified’ by their case and wanted to meet. Mr Streeting gave the response after the nurses launched legal action against County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust over being forced to share a changing room with a man identifying as a woman. Darlington nurse, and President of the DNU, Bethany Hutchison, said: “We were nervous going into the meeting, but he put us at ease, gave us time and listened, which was encouraging. We now, however, need to see firm action from Wes and a clear consensus from the government and the NHS on these issues. “Sadly, we continue to be treated appallingly by the Trust. The policy they have in place is putting women at risk and is open to abuse and should be changed urgently. We have been shocked, however, to find that the ‘rights’ of a man identifying as a woman continue to be supported and promoted, while ours as women have been ignored and even pushed out. “We are not doing this just for nurses. We are doing this for women across the country, for example those who are working in the police force, but also for sisters, daughters and mothers everywhere.”

They've already withdrawn the training module according to the Daily Mail.

I wonder if that is the power of Sex Matters. Their report was published a few days ago.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 30/10/2024 21:53

The nurses are being represented by Christian Concern so it doesn't seem like change would've happened due to Sex Matters.

You've misunderstood.

There is no suggestion Sex Matters is working with / for the nurses.

They are merely doing what they are set up to do, is making sure sex matters whether at work, in sport of whatever.

So having looked at the guidance they have written to the NHS.

Have you read their letter to the NHS?

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 31/10/2024 05:53

I have not misunderstood

Very happy to see that Wee Streeting is showing up consistently now as a health secretary who is an ally to women and gay men. Great to see that in this bizarre day and age. Now what we need is reform of the equality act as has been set out by Sex Matters and then repeal of the GRA. That seems the least homophobic and sexist way to protect trans and NB people against discrimination, and protect women and anyone who is same sex attracted- that we all actually can use an Equality Act that’s been made fit for its purpose.

Slothtoes · 31/10/2024 08:14

Many HR and corporate policies are still confused legally by Stonelaw so it will take parliament being very clear to sort that out. Hopefully Streeting will be able to gain traction because it seems obvious that left unreformed, the Equality Act and GRA leaves the taxpayer vulnerable to sorting out these type of cases individually and we all know there’s no money left in the system. I’m not thinking there’s going to be some sudden mass renaissance of women’s right and support for people to be same sex attracted, in Parliament. Although it would be a joy to be wrong about that.

So it’s fantastic that Wes is happy to back these women but just hope he’s on board with understanding that legal change is actually the only way to protect women and gay people from gender identity politics in action. And to restore confidence nationally that it’s OK to treat biological sex as an important thing that has a lot of value to autonomy and privacy, dignity and safety. And that this shouldn’t be left up to religious lobby groups who don’t have a good record on winning cases and have their own specific agenda to try to tackle.

Igmum · 01/11/2024 08:37

Excellent plan @Slothtoes - and for him to get support for this from the lunatic TRAs now in government. I'm hoping that now Wes has seen the light more MPs will.

TwistedWonder · 01/11/2024 08:48

Can’t say I’ve ever been Wes Streetngs biggest fan but I will applaud an MP who has been prepared to listen to people and see the bigger picture.

Lets hope more follow his example as there’s still too many in government with the attitude’TWAW no debate no discussion STFU you terf dinosaurs’

Wes is obviously fiercely ambitious and has his eye on the top job in the future and by showing he’s actually listening to the women voters it will help his cause no end.

So ladies put your money where your mouth is and join a union that respects single sex spaces

Which union would that be?

SallyForf · 01/11/2024 22:30

Thank you for the share. A great article. Thank you to Janice Turner.

UtopiaPlanitia · 02/11/2024 16:12

Great article, and excellent to see someone describe the case using accurate sex pronouns for the male nurse - it makes things much clearer for the reader.

larklane17 · 02/11/2024 16:27

Thank you Janice Turner. Excellent reporting.
With such contempt for female members, it’s little wonder the trade union movement is haemorrhaging women, with 83,000 leaving last year alone

Over thirty years one of those nurses paid into Unison The one occasion in all that time she asked for support, they turned her down.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 02/11/2024 17:47

I left my union last year. Not UNISON but another big one that is falling over itself to avoid using the word “woman”.

AutumnCrow · 02/11/2024 18:47

The NEU are crap, too.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 02/11/2024 18:53

There've been a number of despairing women fed up with their misogynistic unions captured by male entitlement. There seem to be several possibilities - USDAW has apparently recognised that biological sex exists (can't believe I've typed that sentence on 2024) and Affinity seems to be a useful alternative:

HPFA · 03/11/2024 08:42

It's probably not a coincidence that this has happened at the same time as Badenoch becoming favourite to win the Tory leadership contest.

This is an issue she will want to fight on - if Labour can come to what most voters see as a moderate position (even if it might look muddled and inconsistent to people with definite views on the subject) it makes it easier to take away her oxygen.

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 03/11/2024 09:48

Speaking of Unions. TUC want to hear views on toilet and welfare facilities at work:

borntobequiet · 09/11/2024 08:37

A Unison spokesman said the union was not involved in the employment tribunal case and it would not be appropriate to comment on it.

Unison is a disgrace.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/11/2024 08:46

Good to see that the case is still being covered. The comments are of all in favour of the women.
