”BREAKING: The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, has this week met with the Darlington nurses and said he is committed to the belief that sex is biological being reflected in the day-to-day running of the NHS under his watch. The nurses, who are being supported by the Christian Legal Centre, also handed in a CitizenGo petition signed by 48,000 people to Number 10 Downing Street calling for the government to do whatever is necessary to ensure women have access to single-sex changing rooms and toilets. The meeting followed a statement Mr Streeting made in the lead up to the General Election in June when he said on X/Twitter that he was ‘horrified’ by their case and wanted to meet. Mr Streeting gave the response after the nurses launched legal action against County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust over being forced to share a changing room with a man identifying as a woman. Darlington nurse, and President of the DNU, Bethany Hutchison, said: “We were nervous going into the meeting, but he put us at ease, gave us time and listened, which was encouraging. We now, however, need to see firm action from Wes and a clear consensus from the government and the NHS on these issues. “Sadly, we continue to be treated appallingly by the Trust. The policy they have in place is putting women at risk and is open to abuse and should be changed urgently. We have been shocked, however, to find that the ‘rights’ of a man identifying as a woman continue to be supported and promoted, while ours as women have been ignored and even pushed out. “We are not doing this just for nurses. We are doing this for women across the country, for example those who are working in the police force, but also for sisters, daughters and mothers everywhere.”

I don't think he looks cornered at all. He looks perfectly confident in the photo.
This is what we want. The captured politicians who've been spouting TWAW nonsense for years having the confidence to admit they're wrong. He's led the government into accepting Cass (despite the number of trans extremist MPs they have) and I suspect will be making it much harder for his captured colleagues to keep pushing their "trans kids" mantras - especially as they decide what to do over the draft gender questioning children guidelines for schools.

Absolutely. Politicians indeed people who change their mind are the ones most welcomed in my world

Notaflippinclue · 28/10/2024 19:36

No wonder recruitment is down 40% - must scare young mainly women witless when they see there isn't any support from employers unions and the inept NMC on this issue - their role should be based on science and biology - surely!

Well it's a fucking disgrace that they had to go to a christian charity because normal unions don't support women against male sexual harassment & voyeurism at work.

Yes, exactly! I’m a lifelong trade unionist, but the unions have been a disgrace in this whole issue.

And as OP says, the right to (peacefully) protest includes the right to protest against things we support, eg abortion.

It’s like free speech: it has to include the right to say things we disagree with, otherwise it’s not free speech.

The nurses should have been supported by their union and the left. As they weren’t, I’m just glad that someone did step in.

These women are awesome 💪

Thisis1980 · 29/10/2024 07:27

Very brave Darlington women. It’s shocking that the unions aren’t supporting the nurses - but I’m out of touch I can see that.

Now let’s watch Streeting actually DO something about it!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/10/2024 08:04

Interestingly the NHS state that "We are determined that all women who work and receive care in the NHS are treated with dignity and respect".

That must be a first for them to state that.

Helleofabore · 29/10/2024 08:21

So the NHS made the training mandatory in August, two months ago, and the senior executives in change of rolling that out approved ‘out of date’ guidance to be used?

Or did the guidance become out of date immediately a letter was received pointing out the errors and how it was not fit for purpose?

Seems like for such an important qualification that everyone must complete, it was either never actually checked or maybe those signing off are ideologically driven to think that the guidance was appropriate. Of course it could also be a sign that the management team didn’t do the session themselves either but imposed the requirement on everyone else.

Snowypeaks · 29/10/2024 08:32

Almost as annoying is the article which keeps saying "trans" or "transgender" when it should say "male".

But, but…the NHS are determined to include men in the category of women.

highame · 29/10/2024 08:59

but, but, but....if they don't, then identity politics can't move forward😂
The end of the cult would make them cry a lot

They can't openly say anything else though. But it could be taken as a pointed comment that "other" women have to respect the identity of any male who says he is a woman.

Suspect you're right. But as the word woman has "fallen out of use" in so many parts of the NHS, it's a shock to see them use it.

FallinUltra · 29/10/2024 09:39

All women is usually code for ‘men’.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2024 09:43

Yes that's what I thought too @FallinUltra

lets be fair nobody ever checks the training, or even does it, we just click through at speed...

I was really wary of Wes Streeting so I’m pleased to see these developments. The nurses are amazing, more power to them.

I did NOT anticipate ever sending Mr Streeting a card. Golden Bridges R Us.

These women are inspirational and I’m so pleased that the Daily Mail coverage was sympathetic to their cause.

I can’t help wondering why the DM still insists on using female descriptors for men like the one making life very hard for these nurses - the article reads as less impactful (and at times confusing) because of the refusal to describe a male as a male. It leaves journalists tying one hand behind their back deliberately while trying to accurately describe the fight against discrimination by women.

AutumnCrow · 29/10/2024 13:46

I wish that the papers with a lot of clout (due to their massive circulations & readerships) like the Mail would tell the Editors' Code to go fuck itself. It's a nonsense on reporting gender crap and they know it.

Sidebeforeself · 29/10/2024 13:56

I think it’s a great step forward, BUT he’s got a hell of a fight on his hands if he wants others ( especially Cabinet members) to back him on this. Given his obvious ambition ( not a bad thing) I fear he may decide to stay an ‘ally” rather than be a force for change.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 29/10/2024 19:06

What pisses me off most about this particular story is that of all the sectors you’d hope would resist gender ideology, the healthcare sector, where a grasp of biology is crucial, is the one you’d assume would look askance at the notion that people can become a different sex 😫
