I need a new union

teawamutu · 13/05/2024 12:01

I'm Civil Service, and I am DONE with PCS.

Even if I was prepared to overlook their presence protesting LWS in Scotland - and I'm not - the motions condemning Cass and government clarification of women's sex-based rights are the final straw.

I want a union that won't actively work against me as a woman.

Any suggestions for non-demented twats who are actually recognised and effective?

I don't know much about unions, but I wish you well with a new one. Someone will be along soon, with a suggestion; there was one a few weeks back, but I can't remember its name.

Alternatives to union membership www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/5045657-alternatives-to-union-membership

Concerning that there weren't many replies. Does that mean there are few options?

CornishPorsche · 13/05/2024 12:27

Who have recognised negotiating rights with your department?

I'm not familiar with with the GC v captured policies of all TUs, but common CS ones are:

Unite
TUC
Prospect
UNISON
FDA

plus the many others who are industry specific.

Thanks, I knew I'd seen something recently. I think most of them are pretty captured :-(

USDAW just voted to recognise biological sex. See thread above. Not really suitable for your sector though.

Take a look at Affinity, an independent union which also knows what a women is.
https://workaffinity.co.uk/employers-must-respect-the-law-on-freedom-of-expression/

The President of RMT union recently said some positive things too:

I am hoping things are going to change in the unions over time. I hope GMB will flip before long because it seems there is at least some resistance there.

I am now with Affinity, they cost less that half of my Unison subs and have been really helpful with an issue at work. Their advice was spot on.

If you go to their website www.workaffinity.co.uk and look at their newsletters you will see mention of Academics/Alison Bailey/Freedom of Expression.

The organisation I work for doesn’t recognise any union for negotiating rights, so I didn't have that consideration, although that alone would not have kept me with Unison.

teawamutu · 13/05/2024 13:14

Affinity sounds v much worth investigating, thank you.

Unison does not think women matter.

Tallisker · 13/05/2024 17:51

I'm in the same boat, tea, and have just cancelled my PCS subscription.

I'm currently very ill and might need union support, but I just can't bear my hard-earned going to a denying-women gang. See thread about motions against 'anti-trans' policies.

TUGCNC4T · 13/05/2024 18:02

Hi OP. I think the problem with posting on here asking which unions are GC / anything less than solidly TRA is that any unions identified as such will promptly be targeted by activists.

Also what matters is what the position is in your local branch, and what the other union branches in your department are like. If it’s your branch which has submitted the anti-women’s rights and anti-child safeguarding motions, then wait and see if they get approved at conference, and if they do get approved, cancel your membership and tell them why.

If your branch hasn’t submitted those motions then go to your branch’s meeting to decide on its voting positions at conference, and point out that the Cass motion is anti safeguarding, and see if you can get them to take a decision to vote against at conference. If you’ve got any colleagues who share your views and are members, go as a group to the branch meeting and make your case.

If you do decide to cancel, arrange to meet the reps for the other unions in your Dept and see if you can test the water with them, about what their branch position is, before deciding whether / which one to join.

As you’re in the CS, join the SEEN network.

I thought this thread was called "I need a new unicorn"...

I need new glasses. And a new unicorn. (And a new union.)

More likely to find a fecking unicorn than a union that doesn't espouse misogynist BS, tbh.

I'm with Unison. Also used to be a rep and still have some friends who are reps / senior officials. There are some GC employees in Unison but not enough.

I left UCU and joined Affinity. Should have done it years ago. 30 years a member and I ticked the ‘dissatisfied’ box as the explanation for leaving. No one contacted me to ask why. That’s how much UCU values its members.

Maray1967 · 13/05/2024 22:41

Perhaps the UCU hierarchy worked out how old I am and drew some conclusions about why I’m dissatisfied.

ScholesPanda · 14/05/2024 16:31

I'm in PCS. The thing with PCS is that any branch can submit a motion to conference. It doesn't mean it will be debated at conference, and if it is debated it doesn't mean it will pass. There are definitely GC reps and members.
Other civil service unions are:
Unite
GMB
Prospect
FDA
Unite and GMB not very GC.
Don't know about Prospect or the FDA.
