The Bluestocking is reopening

It's time we reopened the Bluestocking, I think.

This is the FWR pub, situated in the charming village of Badley Fuckitt near the Shady Pines rest home. It has a cannon (for reasons lost in the mists of time), goats in the paddock next to the beer garden and a menu including many soups and cakes. It's open all hours, serving breakfast and tea to all weary women, in addition to being the ideal location to metaphorically drown your sorrows.

'GOAT' as in Greatest Of All Time. It is symbolic of many things, and indeed of nothing. waffles on for 15 minutes

😂I believe a few paragraphs of pretentious waffle add value to any piece of art.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2024 14:25

Terry Pratchett called it L-space.

Yes indeed.
Which reminds me, if anyone sees an orangutan, offer him a banana, point him towards The Staunch Ally and whatever you do fgs don't call him a monkey.

Or give him bags of peanuts when there’s a live act on stage!

Hopefully according to author, or the Dewey Decimal System, or anything other than this interior decoration trend... it really is a 'thing'😱

If the Bluestocking needs a librarian, please may I have the job? It is my dream career.

I will order the fiction alphabetically by author, and the non fiction by the Dewey decimal system. My own library at home is divided into fiction and non fiction, and the fiction is divided by height (to make the most efficient use of the bookshelves where I can change the height) and sub divided by author. The non fiction is divided by broad topics, and has spread out of the room full of books into shelves all over the house. And I need more bookcases.

When ds1 was about 12, I spent some time volunteering in his school library - initially to help the librarian, but one left and their replacement went on long term sick and then left, so I was running the library. If ds3 had been a bit older, I would have applied for the full time job. As it was, I spent many happy hours checking the Dewey decimal numbers for the non fiction books and relabelling them neatly and clearly, so it was easy to sort them out when the little buggers had spent their lunch hours mixing them up.

I see the next sharpie/pencil/stationery/bookshelf anonymous meeting will be a full house. Anyone have bingo dabbers?

Or (takes out garlic) by colour of spine?

NOOOOOOOOOO......sacrilege. Books are meant to be read

quantumbutterfly · 08/08/2024 13:45

When I see interviews with bookshelves in the background I look to see what the interviewee is reading...and I judge 😁especially the one who had bookshelf wallpaper instead of actual books.

I do this to all interior design in general.
There's some important person talking about something of world significance and I'm going "awful kitchen and just look at that wallpaper".

FuzzyPuffling · 08/08/2024 15:49

The pub's getting close to closng time @ErrolTheDragon

Please may we have a new thread?

Bannedontherun · 08/08/2024 15:53

The Stationary Cupboard has to be in Pedantry CornerWink

Unless it’s one like this?

lcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2024 16:34

Ooh wheels. Talking of which. Can I assume the library has one of those ladders that you can whizz round the shelves on. Possibly while singing about books.

@EdithStourton ,No, no known links with east anglia, West Yorkshire, with one Irish grandparent. I think it's a pennine thing, very much in "hill folk" land, right next door to Lancashire 😁

I’m originally from one of the villages round there, so Pennine that it has “Pen” it its name and some may think that means it identifies as male.

I read “It fair reminded me of offices …” in the accent I would have had then.

Now I live in East Anglia, but not east enough to hear fair used in that way. Mind, most people I speak to here are incomers like me.

Nah. Apart from meaning something like 'top' a pen is a female swan.
I do like the place names which essentially mean 'hill-hill' or even 'hill-hill-hill' in some combination of cumbric/norse/anglo Saxon or whatever. There's quite a few.

More room over here

Bluestocking - the second leg www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/5137717-bluestocking-the-second-leg

(But as per my previous posts I don't own the place so if I'm not around when we need the next extension please someone else open the door!)

Erm… the full name is Penistone… 😀

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2024 18:52

We have respect for etymology and pronunciation here.Grin

We could fill up this thread with tautological placenames
I'm quite near Pendle hill. It derives from penhul - cumbric 'pen'(hill) and old English hyll (hill) ... and then at some point an extra 'hill' got tacked on for good measure.

I like the idea of “penis” starting with a term for a female being.

Discussion of “Penistone” from here -

The place-name Penistone is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Pengeston(e) and Pangeston; later sources record it as Peningston.[2] It may mean "the farmstead at the hill called Penning", in reference to the high ridge immediately south of the town. This combines the Brittonic word penn(meaning a head, end, or height) with the Old English suffix ing and the word tun (meaning a farmstead or village).[3]

I don't think we'll see the Librarian until TERF closes in Edinburgh. I keep getting postcards ordering more peanuts. Actually, the last one asked for.walnuts so he may have moved on the Germaine Greer one.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/08/2024 00:26

Erm… the full name is Penistone…

Just down the road from DP parents.

lcakethereforeIam · 09/08/2024 11:20

Do the locals pronounce it 'penny-stone', 'pen-is-stun', 'penis-tone', some combination or something else?

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 08/08/2024 16:29

Those are castors, not wheels... so Pedantry Corner is its natural home.

It's so nice that I want it for my house, having wheels castors will make it easier to nick... I'll wheel it all the way to Holyhead ferry and - oh dear I've blown my getaway plans🤔
