The Bluestocking is reopening

It's time we reopened the Bluestocking, I think.

This is the FWR pub, situated in the charming village of Badley Fuckitt near the Shady Pines rest home. It has a cannon (for reasons lost in the mists of time), goats in the paddock next to the beer garden and a menu including many soups and cakes. It's open all hours, serving breakfast and tea to all weary women, in addition to being the ideal location to metaphorically drown your sorrows.

Datum - singular
Data - plural

Did do Latin
Didn't learn that
Leant about amo amas Amat and homosexual relationships

midgetastic · 06/08/2024 21:45

Latin was logical much easier than French

Yes but isn't 'data' singular feminine, 'datum' singular masculine? So can't we use 'data' as a singular in that case, why does data have to be masculine?
Since I don't actually know Latin, apart from bits of prayers and stuff, I am totally unqualified, and probably shouldn't have set this hare runningGrin

Boiledbeetle · 06/08/2024 21:57

You lot might as well be speaking a foreign language for all the sense it makes to me.

I shall La La La La La La La La La La La La my way through the previous posts!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/08/2024 22:07

I'm not getting into Latin grammar at this time of night, but will go and dig out a German recipe that is good for making a dent in cucumber gluts.

Back in a mo.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/08/2024 22:11

Here we go. German cucumber stew (sounds weird, tastes great).

2-3 cucumbers
2 onions
200 ml sour cream
Meatballs (or vegetarian equivalent)
2 handfulls of dill

Peel cucumber, quarter lengthways and scoop out the seeds, then chop into bite-size chunks.

Fry 2 smallish onions until translucent. Then add the cucumber bits and fry for 5 minutes.

Add salt, pepper and 200ml of creme fraiche.

Put as many balls on top as you like and put lid on pan.

Stew for about 20-30 mins or until the meatballs look properly cooked.

Then liberally add dill and serve either on its own, or with rice or crusty bread.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2024 22:22

I once had an excellent starter which was large prawns and cucumber batons lightly sautéed in garlic butter.

Very proud of my A in GCSE Latin! Can't remember any of it now.

Talking of which - oldest child did very well in his Nat 5s today (Scottish GCSE equivalent). Stiff drink for relief and celebration please if you're going to the bar

quantumbutterfly · 06/08/2024 23:27

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2024 21:39

I don't know, I never had the option to learn Latin at school.
But I would have declined if had.

funny😂

Olderbadger1 · 06/08/2024 23:33

Wasn’t there a llama in the previous incarnation? Or a pub camel called Doris? Or both? (Sorry , haven’t read all the thread - too over-excited at the reopening).

quantumbutterfly · 06/08/2024 23:35

Maybe the llama is now identifying as a quokka.

Olderbadger1 · 06/08/2024 23:41

Unlikely - as I recall it was a miserable complaining type. Hung round the bar waiting to be fed crisps.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2024 23:44

Ah, I think she's been banished to the far field with the billies for spitting.

OP posts:
Olderbadger1 · 06/08/2024 23:48

Yes! Well-remembered Errol. I think the banishment was the right decision. Can’t have camellamas spitting in your gin and tonic. Sets the wrong tone entirely.

Chersfrozenface · 07/08/2024 04:55

I did Latin O level. It was very useful if you did science, history or, like me, French and Spanish.

And 'data' is plural. Second declension neuter.

midgetastic · 07/08/2024 07:35

@MarieDeGournay

I think data is always neuter - all um endings might be

highame · 07/08/2024 07:42

Compulsory year of Latin. Final comment in report 'alas'

highame · 07/08/2024 07:46

The Camel deserved banishment. Prone to breathing over everyone when Errol had cleaned. The combined smell of camel breath and air freshener wasn't the best mix

Eh? What's this about me cleaning? I don't work here, let alone open the place - I just let you lot know the place was open!Grin
The Landlady is very happy for people to do cooking, gardening, tend the animals etc if it brings them joy, of course, and if anyone actually likes cleaning they're more than welcome.

I'm helping make morning brews at the moment though... I need my second mug of tea of the day...anyone else?

Plz.
Feeling the need for extra tea this morning. Any chance of a nice cup of Darjeeling with a splash of milk? I've run out at home.

I've just checked the sourdough starter and it's looking a bit dodgy. I'll have a go with it anyway and let you know at lunchtime if the results are edible or not. There is also a giant pan of soup (made with courgettes, kindly donated by friends who are over-run, disguised with onions and tomatoes).

I'm all in favour of that bloody camel being kept outside and ideally three fields away.

My animal list is
Dogs: Yes / Cats: Maybe, some are nice
Cows: maybe / Camelids: hard no, they spit
Sheep: yes, even though they have a death wish / Goats: no, they smell
Chickens: Yes/ Ducks: no, they shit everywhere and it's big and squishy, unlike hen shit.

AlisonDonut · 07/08/2024 08:28

Aah, I feel more normal today. My snark is back. And I have pottery in half an hour.

Runner ducks though.

There is a portrait of a two headed llama down one of the corridors. I was using it as a means to guide Cake from point A to point B the other day. I had wondered if it had any personal connection to the pub!

Pottery sounds like fun.

Runner ducks are v cute and duck eggs make the best cakes, but nah, the mess...

ErrolTheDragon · 07/08/2024 08:44

Unfortunately we've never had an actual pushmi-pullyu.

The ducks usually stay near the pond so they and their deposits are easy enough to avoid.

There's lots of activity around the bird feeder - I've spotted coal tits, lots of young bluetits and a zephyr of bumbarrels* so far this morning.

*aka a flock of long tailed tits.

Are runner ducks the ones that look like a duck and a walking stick had a baby?

Yes, for tea please. No milk.
