Are trans people really facing genocide?

I follow a trans creator on social media. This person is not particularly well-known but I follow them so I'm not in an echo chamber and so I can better understand the opposite point of view.

This person, and others they follow, have been posting about how trans people are facing "a genocide". With new laws on sexual battery being proposed/passed in some states and the attempts to classify "gender reassignment surgery" as sexual harm it seems many trans people now believe this is part of a wider plot not to, you know, safeguard young children but to actually legally murder trans people.

The content I have seen is trans people saying they are facing Stage Eight of a genocide which would be akin to concentration camps.

The laws do seem pretty radical (death penalty, outlawing of drag) but AIBU to think that calling it genocide is hyperbolic? And that given the meaning of the word, genocide can only be committed against racial and ethnic groups?

I'm willing to have my mind changed. I can believe that sex is immutable and still not want trans people to face the death penalty but I find the equating to the national persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust quite disturbing.

I saw this curious tweet from Katy Montgomerie:

https://twitter.com/KatyMontgomerie/status/1651160915788591107?t=GJVoy4iWSLXh2-6lCyftLg&s=19

Mainstream anti-trans figures call for public executions of trans people and doctors, states silence democratically elected trans representatives, ban expert healthcare, take children from their families... but if you even mention the word fascism then you're being "hysterical"

No idea where that has come from! Public executions?

The whole tweet from Montgomerie is hyperbolic nonsense.

MavisMcMinty · 28/04/2023 18:25

Well, Montgonerie’s tweet could certainly be labelled “hysterical” but Montgomerie has used that word themself.

Today, in 1943 a little girl, Michele Levy was born into a Jewish family.

8 months later, on 20th December she arrived at Auschwitz and was murdered.

TRA's can fuck right off with fetishising genocide.

Ramblingnamechanger · 29/04/2023 00:57

Trans people are in danger from those that have convinced them into having dangerous surgeries and other medical treatment… but I don’t think that this is what is meant here

TRA's can fuck right off with fetishising genocide.

The entire population of Oradour-sur-Glane. 643 civilians, men, women and children, shot or burned alive in 1944.

The children and the elderly of the Lodz ghetto, 1942, where the leaders of the ghetto were forced to talk their population into handing them over under threat of the entire population being slaughtered otherwise. (They were anyway.)

Fetish is the right word. How overprivileged has a society become when people play with words and fantasies about things like this?

But then this is the same ideology that splatters fantasies about decapitation and 'kerb stomping' all over social media: who has a mind that can conceive of doing that to another person?

CurlewKate · 29/04/2023 09:52

10,000 gay and bisexual men have died of HIV/AIDS. Now there's a genocide....

When asked to justify the bit about public executions, Monty linked to a tweet by someone I've never even heard of, apparently expressing support for public executions of anyone who has helped a child transition. Not trans people themselves. I mean, still an obvious nutter.

But how is this different to the many trans activists who publicly call for "TERFs" to be killed?

endofthelinefinally · 29/04/2023 10:39

The appalling demonisation and slaughter of the Rohingya people in Myanmar. All orchestrated on facebook.
That really is a dreadful example of hatred.

Produce that link and person and prove it happened, and you'll have every woman here (and in the grassroots orgs) immediately tell you that person is nuts, they emphatically do not support violence under any circumstances, and would be right there in the front lines of defense for any batshit groups presenting any real threat to trans people.

And then look at whether you've ever seen reciprocal reactions to the depressingly thousand upon thousand, year upon year explicit death, rape, quite sociopathic means of murder (kerb stomping which is the product of a very sick mind indeed, barbed wire baseball bats, machetes, 'die in a grease fire') emanating in a tide of sewage from the political TQ+ movement. Often from well known public figures, quite openly. I mean we have MPs smiling under banners about raping the PM and beheading women who want equality, so if we're going to have a panic about genocide because of a tweet, frankly women get to panic first and the TQ+ lobby have some apologising to do.

BluebellBlueballs · 29/04/2023 11:30

It's the manipulative suicide threat thing. If you don't give us exactly what we want people will top themselves.

I genuinely feel sorry for anyone suicidal but threats for political manoeuvring is emotional manipulation at its finest.

SquidwardBound · 29/04/2023 11:31

absolutely the fetishisation of genocide and the role play of performative victimhood is distasteful and abhorrent.

TRAs indulging in this stuff should be ashamed of themselves.

Genocide is a term that describes a real thing - an atrocious set of practices that have affected and continue to affect real people in unimaginable ways. Genocides cause ongoing cultural damage and trauma for those who survive them.

Several examples of actual genocide have already been mentioned on this thread. These are by no means the only genocides anyone could talk about. Several ethnic groups are being subjected to actual stage 8 genocide in the world as TRAs are using this as a costume to garner sympathy or rhetoric to get what they want.

Do these TRAs really not understand that their experiences are in no way comparable to what’s currently happening to the Urghurs in China, the West Papuans in Indonesia, the Rohingya in Myanmar, the Tigray people in Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Ukrainians, and so on?

None of this is stuff to play make believe with.

And this is a site where abused women come to talk to other women for advice and support, and therefore we know this is a thing, and that these threats are often weaponised by abusive partners as coercive control.

Which means women take this knowledge into account. Perhaps more so than those less experienced.

I don't think it's only women who can experience emotional manipulation via suicide threat. But I get your point.

nilsmousehammer · 29/04/2023 15:33

I didn't think it was necessary to specifically reference that of course these things happen to men too to make very clear I was not forgetting this when talking about abused women and the knowledge pool of women on MN. But thank you for the correction.

For Scottish women, it's a horrible realisation that the two pictured smirking under the sign calling for violence against women are

Kirsten Oswald MP who is the Shadow SNP Spokesperson (Equalities), and Shadow SNP Spokesperson (Women). My bolds.

And

Kaukab Stewart who is a member of the Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee. My bold.

These are our elected representatives calling for violence against us. It's quite astonishing.

I'm not sure it was a correction, more a comment. But chill, its not important in the grand scheme of things.

bluesapphire48 · 03/05/2023 03:34

Actually, it is CHILDREN who are being "genocided." I am afraid that many children who are being coerced into surgery to remove their reproductive organs may someday commit suicide. If and when that starts to happen, it will be a massiveand tragicriposte to the ridiculous whining that TRA's are making about the ludicrous notion that transgenders are being "genocided.

I think that statistics will show that many murdersup to half, perhapsof transgender people are within the trans community, BY OTHER TRANSGENDERS. If so, then transgenders have only themselves to blame for the non-existent genocide.

CurlewKate · 03/05/2023 07:33

Important enough to come and remind people how important men are. And really? Don't tell perfectly chilled people to chill....

Too right. It's absolutely breathtaking. Elected representatives! JFC.
