Kellie Jay Keen and Tucker Carlson of Fox News

concernedfriend500 · 20/05/2022 09:40

I used to admire Kellie Jay Keen for her staunch defence of women's rights and her refusal to bow down to the bullies. But I'm so over her now. Last night I watched one of her YouTube videos and she praised Tucker Carlson to the skies, saying what what a good guy he is. For those of you who don't know, Carlson is a right wing troll who has been accused of being a white supremacist. He presents an insanely popular talk show on US Fox News, on which KJL has appeared on several times. Carlson also pushes the "great replacement" theory and no-one with progressive principles should have anything to do with him, let alone normalise his racism. My guess is that KJK has swallowed the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" line and is going down a dangerous rabbit hole. But I'm out.

not supposed to here.

OMG. The shame.

Absolutely!

You hang your head in shame 😔

DrBlackbird · 20/05/2022 11:34

Strangely I often find that most of their views are reasonable

Now, Ron Desantis scares me with his brand of divisive politics and his views on Covid were highly worrying. But this comment reminds me that all I heard about the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill in Florida was from the likes of The Guardian. When I finally read that it actually was only aimed at children in kindergarten to Grade 3 (5 to 8 year olds) and even then that discussion of sexual orientation just had to be done in an age appropriate manner.

Far more reasonable than I was expecting going by the headlines and hyperbole.

user1471504747 · 20/05/2022 11:35

Oh dear OP. I tried to point this out about him on another thread and was told plenty of people with his views are nice people, and also that some black people agree with him so.

FWIW I agree with you. It’s brilliant to see the message being shared, but at the same time I think some strategy is required because whether posters on here agree or not, I wouldn’t be comfortable telling my friends to watch Tucker Carlson just because PP was there too. And yes it definitely does turn women away from the cause, there’s a massive problem with BAME women feeling feminism isn’t for them. Personally for me some posters views of men like TC do put me off the feminism boards on MN. Maybe they can overlook the racism and abhorrent views but as a mixed race woman I can’t and won’t.

NecessaryScene · 20/05/2022 11:36

Indeed. Still potentially problematic, but not the ridiculous caricature.

Which makes me even more cross with the people doing the caricatures, because there is a serious debate about the potential downsides of such bills.

But they don't seem to want to have a serious discussion, which means they actually may go through without sufficient thought/scrutiny.

I do wonder - if you really care so much about the things you profess to care about, why are you playing games with them?

Helleofabore · 20/05/2022 11:36

Oh dear. Another thread telling FWR posters off for watching media or interacting with a wide range of people.

Naughty FWR! You are all naughty!

user1471504747 · 20/05/2022 11:38

He’s also a delusional conspiracy theorist and not someone I personally would trust to aid my cause, knowing the kind of ridiculous stuff he comes out with

NecessaryScene · 20/05/2022 11:41

I think some strategy is required because whether posters on here agree or not, I wouldn’t be comfortable telling my friends to watch Tucker Carlson just because PP was there too.

Fair enough, in which case you should tell them to watch her interviews with TV hosts (you think) they do approve of. (Oh...)

Her not appearing on things (you think) your friends don't watch isn't going to help make her more visible to them.

(Although part of me wonders whether your friends are feeling similarly uncomfortable about telling you to watch Tucker Carlson just because PP was there).

Given the audience ratings for Carlson among Democrats, I suspect there's a whole bunch of preference-falsifying people all pretending they would never watch him.

user1471504747 · 20/05/2022 11:41

There is also plenty of evidence of him being a white nationalist - he’s coke on video plenty of times spouting great replacement theory as if it’s 100% true. I’m sure I could find some videos if anyone is interested or otherwise I imagine they’re easily googleable.

Highly relevant as this time too seeing as great replacement theory is just one white supremacist tactic to aid extremism

Helleofabore · 20/05/2022 11:41

Here you go OP. Why not join in on this thread too?

Some people are very heavily involved in telling us who we should agree with and on what.

Women being told to shut up and stay on message is how we got in this mess, how could you think more of the same is helpful?

user1471504747 · 20/05/2022 11:48

FWIW I think people can agree with who they want to, listen and speak to whoever they want to etc etc. Free country and all that.

But you have to accept other people are going to have different opinions on those people to you. And you can’t really deny he’s a white nationalist or say there’s no evident when there is plenty. Also plenty of evidence of all his other strange beliefs. If you want to overlook all that then ok, that’s your choice and you are free to do so but then you equally have to accept others (particularly those impacted by his beliefs) are not able or willing to overlook them.

Vanjive · 20/05/2022 11:50

there’s a massive problem with BAME women feeling feminism isn’t for them.

Maybe in the US, but I've found MN FWR to be very welcoming and respectful of black women's opinions.

I'm getting "you can't really deny JKR is a transphobe or say there's no evidence when there is plenty" vibes.

Do we have to watch a one-hour Contrapoints video about it? Hope not.

I don't think that's true at all, he is concerned for the safety of women and children though.

There’s been a couple of threads on this, one as recently as last month I believe. Not everyone feels that way. With most things in life people have different opinions.

Personally I can see why people feel that way, I’ve seen racist posts on FWR, and some of the posters on here have been very vocal on BM on certain threads. So when you recognise a name name of a frequently racist poster on BM then posting all over FWR it can make you feel a bit uncertain. Also a lot of racism denial in the Central Park threads.

Tbh I think the main issue there is really how MNHQ deal (or DONT deal) with racist posts/posters but of course that is for another thread.

Yhis is the thread I’m referencing, you can even see from the first page unfortunately some posters felt it was appropriate to leave racist responses which were deleted. Why do lots of black women feel feminism is not for them

Sorry if I’m misreading your comment - you don’t think it’s true at all that Tucker Carlson is a white nationalist and that there is evidence of that?

What do you think of great replacement theory and it’s vocal supporters then? Confused

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 20/05/2022 11:58

There is also a difference between what the OP has done

I don't want to watch this because....

And what other posters say which is

I don't want YOU to watch it because....

And worse still

If you watch this thing I told you not to watch it means that you are EXACTLY the same as them

Oh dear OP. I already tried on another thread to control what people watch and who people give interviews to and it didn't work there either.

Please tell me where I have done this? I’ve said multiple times people are feee to view, listen to, share etc etc whoever they want. It’s a free country and I’m glad to live in one. Doesn’t mean I have to agree - and if I don’t agree do I have to be quiet about that?

It feels an awful lot like if you don’t agree with some posters views on individuals then you’re not allowed to say so

NecessaryScene · 20/05/2022 12:02

What do you think of great replacement theory and it’s vocal supporters then?

The supporters seem to be mainly Democrats, going on and on about it.

What's that got to do with Carlson? As Greenwald said on the previous page, "There is no racial hierarchy in Carlson's view of American citizenship and to claim that there is is nothing short of a defamatory lie", and I trust him more than I trust you.

I wouldn't mind but I'm much too lazy to watch this stuff anyway!

We know it is a very common occurrence, don't we Rufus?

I mean we were told off soundly this morning in the early hours for saying Ben Cooper is a god! and reminded that ALL the barristers involved in Allison's tribunal are the ultimate professionals, blah blah blah. And like we don't have direct experience of the professionally of one of those very barristers in that tribunal.

The point being, this is yet another thread to direct posters where their attention should be, who they should find credible and what they should be doing.

It is but a daily occurrence and it never goes well.

Helleofabore · 20/05/2022 12:04

This is what I found with a quick google search.

and of course democrats can be racist and believe in racist theories too. Being a democrat doesn’t make it impossible to be racist
