Emma Watson has now tweeted in support of trans activists. I can't believe it.

OP posts:

This is not a surprise.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/06/2020 23:03

Oh, that's cold. She comes out with this after that essay? Wow.

LockdownLump · 10/06/2020 23:04

She's been TWAW for a while now, so this is not a surprise to me.

I have several interesting stories about Emma's so-called time at Oxford Uni...

Just kidding, I don't have any stories. I never saw her there at all actually...

OculusThrift · 10/06/2020 23:05

She has also donated to Mermaids. Baffled!

She likes a bandwagon especially one that might get her work

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/06/2020 23:08

Spoken from the ivory tower of an exceptionally privileged life.

I would dearly love to ask her about the crucialness of Karen White being who Karen White says Karen White is while raping and severely injuring the very unprivileged females locked in with Karen White and unable to escape the lovely inclusive experience people like Emma are busily inflicting on them. It's plain she has not got one single clue about the reality of what she's talking about, or what she is condemning other women to.

backseatcookers · 10/06/2020 23:08

After THAT powerful, eloquent and calm piece of writing from JKR, Emma Watson comes out with that tweet... unreal.

With no call for understanding of JKR, with no support for women, with no understanding or recognition there are nuances in the debate (she is a highly intelligent woman and well knows this) just a glib soundbite.

Emma Watson, who was appointed by the United Nations as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Emma Watson, who championed the HeForShe campaign, which aimed to encourage men to be feminists and allies of women.

Fuck me. Stop the world I want to get off.

poshme · 10/06/2020 23:09

What Michelle said.

Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe are actors, they speak words written by other people. I don't know why anyone expects actors to have any more interesting views than an average person.

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:14

It's such a difficult and conflicting issue isn't it.

I agree with both JKR and EW. How do we reconcile it? Surely the threat to women from TW is very low overall, but how can you both preserve at a systematic level the acknowledgment of female subjugation based on sex while also protecting another vulnerable group, trans women?

It's so difficult and maybe more needs to be done to separate femininity from womanhood. I really believe it's quite doable to support both groups and I wish there wasn't so much vitriol as both perspectives are perfectly valid. There is misguidedness and self preservation on both sides though that contributes to the conflict I guess

This is exactly what I thought. How can she go from an ambassador for women, to ignoring the concerns of women?

I am very disappointed in her.

BringbackLang · 10/06/2020 23:20

Posting about protecting women and young children won't get you likes and love on social media though. That's far far more important.

Such is the price of fame but be wary that you haven't sold your soul to the devil. Things have a way of turning round and biting you on the arse.

StrangeLookingParasite · 10/06/2020 23:23

You can't call people snotty, ugly or talentless just because they don't agree with your opinion

This particular batch, Radcliffe, Watson, Lynch, Leung, got handed a giant winning hand (not to mention being very personally helped, in Lynch's case) by JK Rowling. Not one of them has done anything much after HP, nor did they exactly set the world on fire with their performances in the movies.

She needs to stop being ambassador then.
EarlofEggMcMuffin · 10/06/2020 23:26

Cloudy I no longer agree that the "threat" to women from TW is very low.

If I cannot be guaranteed that I can use a bathroom or changing room, or use the showers at my sports club in a single sex area then that is a "threat" to me.

If my teenage daughter cannot be guaranteed that she can use the bathrooms at school in a single sex space while she deals with the new demands that puberty brings, that doesn't feel like a low level of threat.

And if you are on the receiving end of the types of threats that JKRowling has had online, does the "low" level of threat really matter any more....it's going to feel very high level if they are directed at you.

And if you are a female in a female prison, incarcerated with a TW the threat is really not going to feel very low is it?

Just how many women under "threat" is acceptable?

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 10/06/2020 23:26

Hint the answer is zero.

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 10/06/2020 23:26

Can someone link the tweet? I’m still banned and can’t be arsed to mess about.
Little hypocrite.

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:27

I'm not really sure what their acting credentials have to do with anything? As far as I'm aware DR has already expressed he is extremely grateful for the huge change JKR has caused in his life.

It doesn't mean he isn't allowed to dissent from her moral or philosophical opinions. He does not owe her a dogmatic following because she launched his career. Nobody owes anybody that.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/06/2020 23:28

And I thought my daughter was an embarrassment Grin

Enderthedragon · 10/06/2020 23:29

Nice that she came out and condemned the disgusting 'Choke on my girl cock' abuse that has been directed at JRK though. Oh, wait.....

overnightangel · 10/06/2020 23:30

Great post @EarlofEggMcMuffin
👏🏻

CloudyVanilla · 10/06/2020 23:31

@EarlofEggMcMuffin I wasn't aware most single single sex spaces no longer existed, I'm pretty sure most still are single sex right?

Sorry, I mean that trans women as a group of people aren't a threat, not that eradication of same sex spaces would not be a threat. They are different things. As a group trans women are vulnerable in themselves and they exist regardless of any changes of law which effect women (which I do not support, to be clear).

I'm saying, it's a shame there is an inherent conflict of interest but I really do believe that one can support both perspectives. I know I do. And I'm sure EW does as, like others have pointed out, she has also supported feminist initiatives.
