Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

I'm enjoying the only available comment at the moment,

"For crying out loud."

Almost as if being 'transgender non-binary' is a load of utter balls. Or ovaries?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 13:38

"For crying out loud."

Grin I say that every time I watch the political news lately.

'I still feel scared to shop at Marks and Spencer in case it happens again elsewhere or if I have to deal with that same person again.'

' The fact that I saw a female using the space at the same time in full view of the attendant when I left the changing rooms just made it so much more of a personal attack.'

Sorry, ducks, you saw a whatnow? Are you absolutely sure about what you saw?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/02/2020 13:43

’I still feel scared to shop at Marks and Spencer in case it happens again elsewhere or if I have to deal with that same person again.’

The poor love. Obviously the staff should be moved, retrained or sacked for their obvious transphobia. Angry

The fact that I saw a female using the space at the same time in full view of the attendant when I left the changing rooms just made it so much more of a personal attack.

Wow wow wow! Shock Did this female bodied person just assume the other female bodied person’s gender! Shock Let’s hope this female bodied person isn’t called out on their obvious transphobic response to assuming that the other person with breasts and a vagina identifies as a woman. Anyone transphobic should obviously be banned from M&S!

At this rate there’s going to be no one left in M&S Grin

"For crying out loud" has 598 likes and 1 not like.

Flimflamfloogety · 20/02/2020 13:45

Christ on a bike, why is this so difficult.

If you have a willy, you use the same space other willy owners use.

If you a vag, you use the same space other vag owners use.

Doesn't matter what you're calling yourself on any given day of the week. The private parts dictate where you go that way everyone is safe.

Maybe we need to get rid of the terms men's/ladies on changing rooms and toilets and replace them with willy's and vag to make it absolutely crystal clear to these idiots

BinkySodPlop · 20/02/2020 13:48

My head hurts.... How can you be both transgender and non-binary?? On a different note, I realised that "Lingerie" has not been a subset of Womenswear on their website for quite a while.

Barracker · 20/02/2020 13:48

I imagine the 'female' she saw also identified as transgender non-binary and also reported seeing a female being challenged for using the men's rooms and thought 'quite right too, that female has no place here, it's for enbies like me' and now to add insult to injury has realised that said female has just grossly misgendered theyself in the daily mail.

Probably.

Oh please let NonBinaryPerson2 write to M&S and say that they have been misgendered on national news sites by NonBinaryPerson1...

I just don't get the point of bothering to have single sex changing rooms if you're going to let anyone who says 'oh no, I'm allowed in there' in anyway.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 13:58

Confused It's perfectly clear. They are single sex but also single gender and also non binary changing rooms. For single sexes and both sexes at the same time and exclusively. A sort of Schrödinger's Changing Rooms, if you will.

(Unless you're a boring old female woman in which case you can go and entirely fuck yourself, despite being about 90% of the customer base.)

I love the "for crying out loud". Grin

How is a shop assistant supposed to know that that person is non-binary? Also if one is non-binary why does one have to use the changing rooms of the opposite sex? Can't you go and be your jolly non-binary self in the changing rooms of your birth sex? I buy mens clothes all the time and try them on in women's changing rooms, on account of the vulva-ownership. No-one minds that.

VeganCow · 20/02/2020 14:06

The person in that article looks female. Was born female. Doesn't matter to other users of the changing room what they identify as, because they probably never reach the conversation point to realise this... surely its about appearances when people are getting their kit off and may be half stripped looking in mirrors etc.

Doyoumind · 20/02/2020 14:09

What I don't understand is why someone who is NB must use the men's changing rooms. They say they aren't female but surely they aren't male either. They could use either or neither changing room but insisted they should use the men's, which is for males. For crying out loud indeed.

Jolonglegs · 20/02/2020 14:09

I'm getting rather p*d off with this. Why can't we just have changing cubicles with a fully closing door with 'sealed' walls. Then we don't need to worry about who is what gender etc.

CarpeVitam · 20/02/2020 14:17

@Flimflamfloogety 🤣🤣🤣

FreakOutFarOut · 20/02/2020 14:19

Honestly.

The idea that this level of 'distress' etc is society's issue and not a personal mental health issue for this person is probably the most bizarre thing.

SoldiersinPetticoats · 20/02/2020 14:20

A whole generation of young people are being brought up with no resilience. How a young person who is traumatised from a visit to M&S is going to cope with big, real, grown up problems is beyond me. How will she cope with redundancy, a death in the family, serious illness, infertility etc?

R0wantrees · 20/02/2020 14:20

Non-Binary may mean neither male or female or both male & female or sometimes male & other times female.
Its essentially an 'access all areas' VIP pass.

SoldiersinPetticoats · 20/02/2020 14:21

1018 😂

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 14:22

Surely any sexed changing room would feel very unsafe, totes invalidating and completely denying their right to exist, for someone non binary?
