Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

Let’s use this as a campaign for more free public toilets, at least:

You need to use a toilet in a shop.

But you get told that toilets in that shop are for staff only.

So you scream, cry, moan and rant to media that they denied you a toilet because they didn’t recognise your true identity and wouldn’t let you access it and how mean they are.

The shop grovels and apologises and vows to do better. They promise that from now on nobody will be denied entry to staff toilets decided on sex (gender)

Free public toilets :)

Oh for crying out loud is right.

'I am still very much upset by what happened and if I were to go back I wouldn't go on my own and I would not be shopping for clothes there again.'

Indeed! How could this person ever buy a chicken pie or some wine gums in M&S again without a bodyguard/therapy llama to shield them from the potential presence of a staff member who's confused by gender waffle?

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 09:24

If you are non binary - wouldn’t a single sex facility trigger you anyway? What a hard life.

And those wingers in Syria are crying about bombs and starvation...

R0wantrees · 21/02/2020 09:32

M&S should remove the words men & women from the changing rooms. Instruct all staff to very proudly say that they are mixed sex so fuly inclusive to all people.
There could be a rainbow & some glitter on the new 'mixed sex (non-binary) changing room' signs by way of celebration for the removal of this barrier/Safeguarding.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 09:34

They have in the ones near me. It’s just ‘changing rooms’ or something like that. John Lewis too (and a surprising number of high at shops once you start to look). Even the fancy knicker shop (Bravissimo- yes they have also said male bodies are permitted in their changing rooms).

R0wantrees · 21/02/2020 09:36

Yes but I dont think they are making this marvellous new development of 'mixed sex' changing rooms clear enough to their customers.

Boireannachlaidir · 21/02/2020 09:38

You can't even buy a bra online from M&S now as they're out of so many sizes and their online survey is more concerned about woke points, asking you "which gender you identify with" than selling you a bra Hmm

I won't be sorry to see it disappear from the High Street.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 09:39

They aren’t - it’s up to people to spread the word. Also make sure you ask when you go to try something on and vote with your feet if they can’t tell you or say it’s mixed and you aren’t happy.

I did see a woman march into the changing rooms in the back of the mens section of JL (she was with her husband/boyfriend) and the men milling around in the entrance area holding clothes to try on mostly moved back to the counter and didn’t go in. Haha.

And unicorns - glittery rainbow unicorns . . .

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 09:47

I don’t want glitter all over the loo. You know where it would end up and that’s itchy (remembering past use of bloody lush crap bombs)

HappydaysArehere · 21/02/2020 09:55

I am old enough to remember when M&S didn’t have changing rooms. You took stuff home and bought it back if it was wrong. Those were the days when stuff was made in the uk and all garments were a standard M&S size. Perhaps this madness will lead to a rethink.

DorkingMum · 21/02/2020 11:46

@TheProdigalKittensReturn I really like the sound of a 'therapy llama' actually...

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 21/02/2020 14:31

I don't feel sorry for M&S as an institution but I do feel sorry for the grass roots staff on the frontline, both because they're the ones having to deal with AGPs wanting bra fittings and fragile narcissists demanding apologies for the staff's lack of gender-soul-reading abilities, and because they'll be the ones laid off if M&S goes under, while the upper levels of management and PR will wokey-cokey off to their next Stonewall-approved employer.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 14:37

In my local Primark the staff fronting the changing room on the ground floor ladies dept and the knicker dept are often young women in the hijab.

How exactly are they supposed to navigate being asked to fetch clothes for a male body or asked to measure a bra for a male bodied person, versus being told that they can’t not serve them or even have the right to feel embarrassed or humiliated?

Seems like the TRAs and their handmaidens have failed dismally here.

I am old enough to remember when M&S didn’t have changing rooms and hole in the wall cash line machines didn't exist.

If you ran out of money at the weekend pubs would cash cheques but charged you or you bought something at M&S, paid by cheque, and took it back for a cash refund.
