Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

All the Male NB moan how they want into the women’s spaces & now the female NB moaning about getting into the Male space - if you’re neither (Hmm) why aren’t both spaces equally acceptable to you? It’s almost like it’s about shouting look at me I’m DIFFERENT

Babdoc · 20/02/2020 14:26

Jolonglegs, that wouldn’t provide the all important “validation” of entering a specifically single sex female space, so I don’t see it being popular with the TRAs.
Nor would it provide the sexual jollies for the fetishists, autogynephiles, voyeurs and planters of spy cameras, who get off on upsetting the female occupants of said spaces.
Why do you think people keep offering a “third space” and having it refused.

sunshinesupermum · 20/02/2020 14:26

schrodingerschanging rooms wetting myself

I do like the idea of willies on one door and ovaries on the other.

Why on earth did the trans non binary person cry? Their life seems unnecessarily hard for them poor sausage

PronounssheRa · 20/02/2020 14:27

I still feel scared to shop at Marks and Spencer in case it happens again elsewhere or if I have to deal with that same person again.’

It always makes we wonder how much of a privilege life these people lead. How does anyone have the time for such self absorbed navel gazing.

Alternatively they/them are doing their own man Friday protest.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 20/02/2020 14:31

The fact that I saw a female using the space at the same time in full view of the attendant when I left the changing rooms just made it so much more of a personal attack.

What space is they talking about that a female was in?
The male changing rooms?

GodwinsRulebook · 20/02/2020 14:31

Just going by the photos, that person looks conventionally female. I don't think men would be comfortable with that person in their changing rooms, and I don't think they should be subject to the embarrassment etc.*

Just as women shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable in women's single-sex changing rooms.

This person is seeking external validation. To a certain exten,t we all do, but most of us don't make a public song & dance about, and we're grown ups - we realise that the desire for external validation is about our own insecurities & we need to learn to deal with them. Not project them onto others.

And this person is seeking external validation of a feeling in their head; how on earth - looking at that photo - would a shop assistant - no matter how experienced & professional - know what is in that person's head?

FFS indeed.

*Although caveat: Of course wen have a lot more to worry about re men's behaviour (spy cameras, voyeurism etc etc) than men have to worry about women's behaviour.

kateandme · 20/02/2020 14:33

id like her to have stopped a male going into the 'willys' changing room and said "sorry luv wrong changing rooms." asked why she woud state he lookd like a non binery female today.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 14:40

Myla Corvidae, 30, was born female and now identifies as transgender non-binary using they/them pronouns.

For the benefit of new readers, let's unpack this. Strap in, it'll get bumpy:

  1. Myla was born female. Therefore Myla is not male (the opposite of the binary sex classifications we've all known and loved for centuries)
  1. Myla now has an internal, completely unquantifiable or describable feeling Myla is transgender (as in, Myla feels that internal essence is that of a man, the opposite of woman)
  1. Simultaneously, Myla also claims they is non-binary (they has no special man or woman essence, a.k.a 'gender').
  1. So we have a female sexed person who identifies simultaneously as both a man and as neither of the binary sexes, while at the same time denying the existence of those binary sexes.
  1. Myla does not obviously adopt stereotypical male conventions (appearance, physicality, presentation). But Myla also asserted they right to use male changing facilities and was distressed when them were challenged.
  1. Myla then blithely assumed the invisible internal gendered essences of two other people them encountered on their visit to the store, based on nothing but they sight and speech senses. Them did not ask to be sure, which is literal violence.

A sort of Schrödinger's Changing Rooms, if you will.

I am SO pinching that expression!

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 20/02/2020 14:40

“Corvidae” eh? Plus, that choker could be indicating something or other....

helberg · 20/02/2020 14:42

I think they were trying to make a point. If they are non-binary then surely they could just use the changing room for persons with vulvas.
Or the queue was too long for the vulva changing room and they couldn't be arsed to wait. When challenged, they trotted out the non-binary line (because no one is allowed to say anything about that) and then decided to get themselves in the daily mail making a disgusted face.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 14:42

Thank you Blobby

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who is much clearer about what has happened.

If anything did happen.

Or not.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/02/2020 14:44

Ffs another woke snowflake.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 14:44
  1. There are a cohort of external people who obsessively monitor this board and will flood MNHQ with reports of transphobia when the read any posts and threads like these.
  1. However as Myla is non-binary AND transgender, it is not clear if that doubleplusbad thoughtcrime can be proven. That will not stop the witch hunt (funny how its never a wizard hunt)

Until we can have proper doors on cubicles, instead of flimsy curtains that never cover the doorway and let everyone passing have glimpses of either me or my reflection, and staff permanently in the changing room to ensure there's no attempts at getting into occupied cubicles, I vote for dicks in one set of cubicles and fannies in another.

I really can't be arsed with the 'look at me' crew. We're supposed to guess what gender they feel on a day to day basis and get slated if we get it wrong.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 20/02/2020 14:48

But if that person thinks they are not male or female then why did they cry when first refused to be allowed into the male changing rooms? I thought they wouldn’t have wanted to go in either of them if they are non-binary or am I missing the point? Confused

M3lon · 20/02/2020 14:48

Surely the point about which changing room they were using is more to do with the clothes they were trying on? I mean the 'menswear' is likely on a different floor to 'womanswear' so if you are trying on menswear you would be in the vicinity of the men's changing rooms?

I think it would make M&S's life easier if they have a changing room for trying on meanswear and a changing room for trying on womenswear....

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 14:50

So it’s not a free for all anymore? Relieved since the men’s dept is slap bang next to the kids and just a short escalator ride up to the lingerie dept in my local one.

Lottapianos · 20/02/2020 14:50

Sweet jesus, this 'inclusive' nonsense again. The only people who need to be 'included' in a female changing room are WOMEN, GIRLS, and very young boys who are in the care of those WOMEN. The male changing room needs to be 'inclusive' to MEN, BOYS and very young girls who are with a MALE carer. I don't give a shit how anyone 'identifies' - good luck to you - but stay out of changing rooms that you do not belong in

M3lon · 20/02/2020 14:51

I mean I'm not a member of the sowokemybrainshavemelted gang, but it would be kinda nuts to have to take the clothes you are trying on half way across the store, up the escalator and back across the store right?

This does seem to me to be a reasonable explanation for someone who identifies as non-binary and trying on mens clothes to use the men's changing rooms?

SerendipityJane · 20/02/2020 14:51

“Corvidae” eh?

I'll duck in to mention that's the scientific name for the biological classification:

Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers.

(ducks out again)

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 14:52

Wait! I’ve just started to read the article - and I have a question please...

How can you be transgender and non binary at the same time (or is it in turns?). I think ‘they’ are taking the piss...

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/02/2020 14:54

I am living for DM leaving that solitary comment by itself though. It's fab!

M3lon · 20/02/2020 14:55

I thought transgender was the 'umbrella' term and non-binary was the specific.

Like saying you are a homosexual lesbian...
