Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

Just provide changing rooms with a proper door and let anyone go in who is trying on clothes. It's not fair on the shop assistants to have to work out who is who!

R0wantrees · 20/02/2020 14:55

But if that person thinks they are not male or female then why did they cry when first refused to be allowed into the male changing rooms? I thought they wouldn’t have wanted to go in either of them if they are non-binary or am I missing the point?

Maybe this person identified as Non-Binary trans masculine?
Denying them access to the men's changing room might feel like this identity was being invalidated? Or alternatively by suggesting that a female person should use the female changing room this would invalidate their identity of being non-binary rather than a woman?

Its very difficult to make sense of.

They wanted to use the men's changing room & were told not to.
They were very upset, so upset they complained loudly and so M&S apologised.

DelphiniumBlue · 20/02/2020 14:56

Surely Myla was having a laugh? Or proving a point? is Myla in fact one of us?
Also, why is Myla frightened of going into M& S again if the worry is that this might happen elsewhere? How can Myla's refusal to go into M& S affect what happens to Myla when not in M&S?

M3lon · 20/02/2020 14:56

beachy amen to that.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 14:57

Ah yes - the photo explains it all (not).

And I quote...” 'I was utterly shocked and the only thing I could think of to say was "I'm not female" to which she looked me up and down, apologised and walked off.

'I felt sick, like I was being accused of some kind of crime just for trying on clothes. Afterwards, I went home and cried. I have never been accosted like that in a store before.”

Who the hell tried on jumpers? And I’ve got news for you luvvie - a man’s shirt isn’t going to fit properly over your boobs.

M3lon · 20/02/2020 14:58

Is there something wrong with trying on jumpers? I think you've let the froth take over your brain....

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 20/02/2020 14:59

Thank you SerendipityJane, I was aware what that word denoted. I was hinting that this person is bogus. Their name, their presentation and their “gender identity” and very probably the events they are describing. Still, it’s all sunlight, innit

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:00

I just hold it up against myself to see if it will fit - wouldn’t go into a changing room. And please don’t accuse me of having brain damage.

DodoPatrol · 20/02/2020 15:02

Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers.
(ducks out again)

Are you being duck-exclusionary?
What if the duck identifies as a magpie?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 20/02/2020 15:03

'I still feel scared to shop at Marks and Spencer in case it happens again elsewhere or if I have to deal with that same person again.'

What about those who will be scared (for justifiable reasons like previous sexual assault) to try on clothes in M&S knowing a bloke could waltz in at any moment?

And how the fuck is it the staff members fault? Poor thing, I imagine she's getting a bollocking and a disciplinary as we type.

HollowTalk · 20/02/2020 15:04

Doesn't anyone else think this is a joke? That woman looks female and is wearing clothes that many women wear. She's insisting that they should accept her in the male changing rooms just based on her say-so that she's non-binary.

I'd be very surprised if this wasn't someone testing M&S for their wokeness and absolute stupidity.

Maduixa · 20/02/2020 15:06

... mainly used by customers of that gender...

You're allowed to say sex, M&S. Show us on the doll where Victorian English hurt you.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:08

Just saw a thread on twitter. Even a particular lawyer said it was ‘Bonkers’.

Now I’m more confused.

Why choose the male room when they look like a woman and don’t say they ‘feel male’
Why cry and say they aren’t a female?
Why keep crying even when they got home?
What do they want M&S to do exactly?
What about men who don’t really want a females in the changing rooms with them stripping off to their bra to try on some jumpers?

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:08

lord no, I'm not accusing you of having brain damage (that would imply permanent impairment) I just feel you have temporarily let the outrage take over and are flinging ridiculous objects out that aren't really based in fact.

It is perfectly fine to try on jumpers if you want to. Its also fine to try on men's jumpers while in possession of ovaries if you want to. If you do want to try on a mens jumper it would be more efficient to do so in the changing room located right next to the mens jumpers rather than traipsing from one end of the store to the other to try it on in the changing room next to the women's jumpers. In fact carting things to try on between floors is actively frowned upon in most stores.

So while the person in this story appears to have over reacted quite severly, not everything they did that is being painted as ridiculous by you is actually ridiculous at all.

DidoLamenting · 20/02/2020 15:08

I knew that. I'm a big fan of members of the Corvidae family- very beautiful birds.

"Corbyn" is derived from corbeau. The average Corvidae is considerably brighter than Corbyn.

The corbie (raven) is the national bird of Scotland.

LonginesPrime · 20/02/2020 15:09

I only wish I'd tried this all the times they've made me traipse to a different floor to try on a men's jumper - I'm tempted to, although I'm not sure it would do women's rights any favours to feed into the madness!

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:10

why use the male changing room

BECAUSE IT IS NEAR TO THE PRODUCT THEY WERE TRYING ON

bloody hell it REALLY isn't rocket science.

BaronessBomburst · 20/02/2020 15:10
  1. Not a real man.
  2. Not a real surname.
StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2020 15:11

Why did they want to use the mens? Surely they needed non binary changing rooms.

NearlyGranny · 20/02/2020 15:11

So why has the DM run this story in the Femail section, I wonder? Does it not concern men and transmen more than it concerns women?

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:12

No outrage at all - what makes you think that?

I’m wearing a man’s jumper right now as a matter of fact. I wouldn’t bother my arse to try it on in the shop, let alone make a whole song and dance - for that is what it looks like they have done - to make a big point of trying to use the male changing room.

They didn’t say ‘aha - see what a daft system this is!’ did they - they over reacted and cried because they didn’t see how they could possibly have been mistaken for a woman.

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:12

stealth

Oh I don't know....but maybe, just maybe the men's jumpers are on the same floor in the same location as the mens changing rooms.

ffs

StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2020 15:13

Sorry think I've missed a page :)
I identify as only reading the first page of a thread. #benice

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:15

lord right, so because you didn't want to try on an item before purchasing, anyone who does is mad?

Why is there a men's changing room at all if people buying men's clothes don't need it?

This is what I mean....you've extrapolated your feelings that some part of this situation is idiotic to asserting that everything about it is idiotic.

It isn't.

I wouldn't deliberately choose the changing rooms on the opposite side of the store to the clothes I was trying on either.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/02/2020 15:15

Just saw a thread on twitter. Even a particular lawyer said it was ‘Bonkers’.

Well, we’re discussing a female bodied person, so naturally they feel it’s ‘bonkers’. If we were discussing a male bodied person, then there would be outrage from said ‘lawyer’.
