Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

If you are non binary, can you be trans?? Not according to the dictionary.

"Myla said: 'I don't think the apology was enough to be honest, it shouldn't have ever happened to start with and I have lost confidence in Marks and Spencer as a company for standing up for trans folk like myself."

HandsOffMyRights · 20/02/2020 17:26

I don't think the apology was enough

Don't M&S realise it will never be enough? That only full capitulation Rose McGowan hostage style video will do?

And even then, once you deviate from the script, you will remain on Terfblocker forever.

Jaxhog · 20/02/2020 17:29

Schrodinger would love this!

I deal with it by just not using M&S changing rooms at all)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 17:35

Its very difficult to make sense of.

EXACTOMUNDO!

The trans lobby seem to obfuscate language at random in order to promote their agenda.

IT IS NONSENSE!

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 17:37

She isn’t ’trans’ anything - she says that she has an absense of gender (but not sex because that’s impossible) - it does this mean both woman and not woman at the same time.

Schrödinger's gender.

Bagofoldbones · 20/02/2020 17:37

I don't think the apology was enough

Well no. Obviously she wanted a £50 voucher ...

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 17:37

(Didn’t see your there Jax, but great minds think alike)

aliasundercover · 20/02/2020 17:44

Its very difficult to make sense of

Indeed. If we hadn’t been told otherwise I’s almost think these people have no idea what they are talking about or asking for.

The one thing I can guarantee is that when the pecking order is finally sorted out women - by which I of course mean women, not ‘women’ - will be at the bottom.

These are not just male or female shoppers, these are M&S non binary shoppers. GrinGrinGrin

It's a perfect demonstration of how segregating facilities by gender means not segregating at all - because noone can read minds, gender is impossible to ascertain at a glance, so noone at all can be challenged for fear of causing offence.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/02/2020 17:52

I imagine the 'female' she saw also identified as transgender non-binary and also reported seeing a female being challenged for using the men's rooms and thought 'quite right too, that female has no place here, it's for enbies like me' and now to add insult to injury has realised that said female has just grossly misgendered theyself in the daily mail.

You win the internet today Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/02/2020 17:56

Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers.

Perhaps it's left over from when this 30 year old person was a goth. But that wasn't nearly unique and special enough.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/02/2020 17:58

The corbie (raven) is the national bird of Scotland

I studied a film called Cria Cuervos (Raise Ravens) for my Spanish A level

thehorseandhisboy · 20/02/2020 18:01

What is this story even about?

Trans non-binary person uses male changing room. As they look like a woman, a staff member advises that it's not the correct one. Trans non-binary person says they're not a woman and the shop assistant apologies.

Surely if they're non-binary, they're not a man either?

A third space would surely save all this palava?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/02/2020 18:02

Isn’t just one comment a bit unusual?

They're probably premoderated. There are some fairly frank comments on the DM Facebook page.

Melroses · 20/02/2020 18:06

The answer is that we all need to learn how to see into souls.

I wonder if the shop assistants would get extra pay for that ?

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 20/02/2020 18:07

Maybe the moderators looked at the queue of comments, read ‘for crying out loud’ and thought ‘that’ll do it’

It’s up to 2580 likes now.

justasking111 · 20/02/2020 18:11

Well Myla cries a lot is that a non binary characteristic??

'I felt sick, like I was being accused of some kind of crime just for trying on clothes. Afterwards, I went home and cried. I have never been accosted like that in a store before.

'I had to go back in and speak to someone in store because no one took it seriously the first time and I started crying even trying to talk about it again with them.'

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 18:12

So can trans non binary folk recognise each other in a crowd?

No I thought not.

justasking111 · 20/02/2020 18:13

The only reason I would not use a mens changing room is because you can bet a pound to a penny, men fart loud and long in them when changing.

DorkingMum · 20/02/2020 18:17

You know, there is something about this story that worries me. I wonder if Myla is being 'used' by the TRAs as a front for a story. Perhaps this happened and she told someone, but then it was picked up and promoted without her really understanding what the implications would be?
The reason I say this is because she has not taken any steps to protect herself from the inevitable attention and backlash this story mignt generate.
A quick google gets you to all her social media accounts where she identifies as an introvert and also dyslexic. Her educational background does not seem extensive (on her blog she says she has no formal qualifications) and I do wonder whether she really understands what she is getting herself into with this story?

To give her the benefit of the doubt, I do wonder if she is being used as a pawn in someone else's game?

(Anyone read "Middle England" by Jonathan Coe? Similar type of story in there...)

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 18:21

Myla says they are 30 so hardly a poor wee naive kid.

sewingsinger · 20/02/2020 18:23

I don't understand this at all. I thought that M&S had said that anyone can use any changing room - so what's the issue here?

Evenquieterlife33 · 20/02/2020 18:26

”I was utterly shocked and the only thing I could think of to say was "I'm not female" to which she looked me up and down, apologised and walked off.”
“I’m not female” ?? This is just ridiculous. This female person is clearly and actually female no matter if they are transgender or non-binary or whatever. I find it fascinating in one way but then another part of me just thinks - sod off.
