Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

They probably did t expect ‘women’ to try to use the one in the men’s section. They were probably expecting more of the other way traffic.

justasking111 · 20/02/2020 18:28

@DorkingMum you make a good point, they may well be using a vulnerable adult to advance their agenda.

Re 'special' middle class people abusing those working in service roles - absolutely!

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 20/02/2020 18:38

The only way I can rationalise those is ‘people who try on men’s clothes use the male changing room’ and vice versa

Which is clearly the most regressive stereotypical bullshit ever.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/02/2020 18:41

I thought that M&S had said that anyone can use any changing room - so what's the issue here

You are quite right sewingsinger anyone can use any changing room as long as they are men wanting to use women's changing rooms.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

AnotherNightWatering · 20/02/2020 18:47

She has protected her tweets now, which is very wise.

DorkingMum · 20/02/2020 18:51

Lordfrontpaw- age is irrelevant if Myla has SEN issues or learning difficulties for example. I’m thinking of a Susan Boyle type situation where some people accused the media of abusing her for their own gain.

I just think this story doesn’t really add up - e.g. all the crying/being traumatised - it feels like something a PR person would brief someone to say.

sewingsinger · 20/02/2020 18:51

Thanks Schaden, I had a feeling that was the case, I can definitely feel a trip to the mens changing room in M&S coming on! I did ask about this in M&S last year when it all came out and was told than anyone can use any changing room.

AnotherNightWatering · 20/02/2020 18:52

I think she must have sold the story here, not realising how big it would get?

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 18:57

DorkingMum - true - I have seen a few following the same playbook moves (usually male bodied person being asked what’s studded down their bra at airports or not being able to use voice recognition software). They do usually add some element of being traumatised and hysterical though.

HorseFlyOfExtraordinaryLength · 20/02/2020 19:27

I wonder if M&S changing rooms give off some kind of ray or aura or summat and you begin to identify as the gender implied by the label on the changing room.
So, mid store you would lose your gender and become non binary but gravitate toward the men's changing room and you would feel male?

GCAcademic · 20/02/2020 19:50

I feel so sorry for that poor changing room assistant. First to have to deal with the gaslighting, then to have a complaint made, and then the complaint splashed all over the Daily Fucking Mail just because she didn’t realise that she was supposed to admire the emperor’s new clothes. Some people really do just think that everyone else was put on this earth for the sole function of validating them.

HandsOffMyRights · 20/02/2020 20:35

I once got mistaken in Tesco for a small boy. I was wearing my 8 year old son's navy cagoule at the time, so technically gender fluid.

I should have complained and told them I was in fact a 40 year old mother of two. I might have bagged a free aubergine.

WomaninBoots · 20/02/2020 20:59

I'm just enjoying the single comment with over 3000 upvotes at this point.

LangittleClegabbage · 20/02/2020 21:06

Errrrr, yep....... still going to continue my M&S boycott based on this new ridiculousness.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 20/02/2020 21:55

@DorkingMum My first thought was that they were doing it to prove how ridiculous the new policy from M&S is but upon reading more it didn’t sound like they were doing it to prove a point.

Unsure of how this would be used by TRA’s though as it’s really not a good argument in this person’s favour and sounds as ridiculous as it does when it’s heard from the opposite direction.

Languishingfemale · 20/02/2020 22:23

Another customer not returning - they've even sent me some 20% off vouchers despite all the cancelling of accounts. Into the bin they went.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/02/2020 22:25

I don’t actually care if this female bodied person was being used by the TRAs. No one forced this person and if the attention they got wasn’t one they expected, then they’ve just discovered that the majority of people don’t actually think they’re special and just maybe they’ll spend less time looking at their navel and grow up.

gospelsinger · 20/02/2020 23:03

I feel sorry for M&S who seem to be being targeted for this.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/02/2020 23:10

I’ve no sympathy for them, either. They went where they thought they smelt the money and didn’t give a shite about their core customers, women.

I’m no longer being nice, because being ‘nice’ is what has helped and is continuing to help women lose their rights to privacy, dignity and safety.Fuck nice.

HandsOffMyRights · 20/02/2020 23:23

I don't feel sorrý for M&S. They dicked around, didn't give a fig about women/loyal customers and pandered to the penis.

They put girls and women at risk and allowed numerous male fetishists to write pervy reviews (returnable) knickers online.
They didn't remove the reviews, despite our complaints.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 23:33

M&S were told that this wasn’t a good idea. People wrote and tweeted and begged them to reconsider - and their response was ‘no debate’ (as was John Lewis). So bugger ‘em.

OccasionalKite · 20/02/2020 23:43

I don't feel sorry for M&S either, they brought their own loss of revenue on themselves.

But it's so ironic!

After waving men gleefully into the lingerie fitting room (they could very well have provided separate male and female fitting rooms, if they are happy to acknowledge their AGP customers) - they questioned a visually female but personally NB human, using the men's fitting room!

The lack of recognition and acknowledgement!
