Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

M&S are at it again. They're back to having "men" and "women" changing rooms, but...

Scenario: Woman tries to use Male changing rooms. Turned away.
Woman is "non binary" (photos suggest this means jeans and jumper, not name, haircut etc)

Wokeycokey M&S then falls over itself to acknowledge this and rushes out an apology completely contradicting its store staff:
"'The fitting rooms are located within our womenswear and menswear departments and therefore are mainly used by customers of that gender, however, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room in respect of how they identify themselves."

Make up your bloody minds M&S.

But would that also mean if they saw this person heading off to the ladies changing rooms they would be turned away or questioned? You see it’s really not straightforward and I feel sorry for staff these days having to be very careful.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:33

Now the lawyer is chipping in Pro-Moonie (on twitter naughty step for a misgendering incident apparently). This isn’t normal is it?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/02/2020 15:33

If you accept that someone can be 'non-binary', then presumably they are transgender because they've trans'd away from being a man or woman into being NB, though they are still biologically male or female.

Is this correct?

DandelionsAreNotLions · 20/02/2020 15:33

The whole non-binary movement seems to be ordinary middle class people, often in the arts, pretending to be special ,very, very special.

Then claiming attention by abusing and humiliating service and front-line staff doing a valuable job on low wages, by claiming they are transphobic and intoletant for not noticing or caring about their inner gender essence.

Pretty disgusting really.

If someone presenting as male is approaching the changing rooms near the women's clothes with men's clothes to try on then something very odd has happened.

If someone presenting as male is approaching the womens changing room with a bundle of bras to try on then I guess M&S policy is to let them get on with it.

To be honest its not making things much better to send them to the mens changing rooms wiht the bras either!

Nah - just put in cubicles and everyone can get on with their day! That HAS to be the solution...

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:38

Isn’t just one comment a bit unusual?

I looked at the photos of them.
They look pretty similar to me: but a bit younger jeans, trainers, jumper, medium length hair and a reasonable sized bust sorry chest

So how can you tell if that female bodied transgender non-binery IS what ever they say they are.

They might think they should be in the men's.
Me, looking the same, think I should be in the women's.

What exactly is transgender non-binery anyway. A female bodied person who identifies as .....

This article is a timely reminder that yesterday I was in Primark sitting on a bench outside my daughter's changing cubicle (just a curtain) and a young male came and sat beside me waiting for his female friend to come out and show him the clothes she wanted to buy. I am assuming sexes here, I tried not to stare and I could have been wrong about gender presentation. But my point stands either way.

I have written to management about this today and called the store for clarification on their policy. Apparently, there is a disable lockable cubicle available for anyone uncomfortable with the policy. Of course, I mentioned that disabled people should not lose access to the space that they need and the need for fully lockable doors in the main area.

I also mentioned that I saw nowhere a sign that it was mixed sex and was told there was a small sign in the cubicle. I pointed out the woman beside my daughter obviously had no idea that a man could be sitting directly in front as her curtain had not been pulled closed on either side and maybe she did not read the sign.

The manager was happy to take my complaint and gave me the admin email for complaints for head office. However, I am pretty unhappy about this to be honest.

To me, it is evidence that they have implemented mixed sex spaces without adequately addressing the privacy or safety issues for customers in the rush to be inclusive.

Winesalot · 20/02/2020 15:40

And to mention, Primark's fitting rooms in this store are on each floor and there is different floors for mens and females clothes.

Deathraystare · 20/02/2020 15:41

(Unless you're a boring old female woman in which case you can go and entirely fuck yourself, despite being about 90% of the customer base.)

Perhaps we should just flash our bits on the way in!!

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:42

I thought Primark changing rooms were unisex these days?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 20/02/2020 15:42

Changing rooms - meh. Just put proper cubicles in and this whole shit show just evaporates!

Sadly not. It gives men unrestricted access to place hidden cameras.

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:43

"for crying out loud" is a great comment, because if you ARE a member of the sowokemybrainisfallingout gang then you assume it means 'for crying out load M&S, why are you so stuck in the last century' while everyone else is assuming it means 'for crying out loud the assistant even apologised to you on the spot how are going to cope when somethiing actually bad happens in your life'

I wonder which it really was....

M3lon · 20/02/2020 15:45

thatwould there is no conceivable set up that would actually prevent that from happening though! I mean cameras can also be hidden in the current changing rooms....its not like they are guarded 24/7 even when they ARE supposed to be single sex.

So, yes, cubicles really do resolve all the shit show that can possibly resolved will the space remains open to the public.

StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2020 15:46

Going to pinch sowokemybrainisfallingout
Might even try a name change

Michelleoftheresistance · 20/02/2020 15:47

Oh good grief some people make themselves very hard work. And struggle with the idea that not everything is all about them, and not everyone on the planet is going to bend around their personal sense of self identity and prioritise them at all times. And that other people have rights too .

If you put willies and vags on the doors you'll swiftly end up with some numpty wanting to tell you about their very large clit or outie vag, or innie willie, in the misguided belief that your life isn't too short for this and that no one else cares, they just want to be able to use a changing room that doesn't have the opposite sex in it.

Quite honestly if any man’s perverted enough to want to film my aged body he can fill his boots.

Not that I’d go into a changing room to try on a jumper anyway, what’s the point?

midegbabe · 20/02/2020 15:50

M3lon

I don't want to be forced to use the men's changing room just because I am trying on men's clothes!

I like sex separation please.

Winesalot · 20/02/2020 15:50

Lordfrontpaw

Primark fitting rooms are mixed sex. However, our local store is still curtains and not doors. As I mentioned, the woman in the cubicle directly in front of where this man sat had gaps either side (as well as to the floor) because she had not closed the curtain properly. Maybe she had no worries about privacy, but if I could see her (and I saw glimpses of her changing when I looked up) then he certainly could before I closed the gaps for her.

OvaHere · 20/02/2020 15:51

I think all of this plays nicely into the narrative that shops should not be required to have fitting rooms at all. NEXT (for example) is already doing this - they don't offer any facilities to try clothes on in some of their shops, and instead advertise a US-style "no questions asked" return policy. Since we're moving toward everyone buying everything on line - why bother about fitting-room drama?

Yes. I think eventually this is what will happen. M&S have already closed many stores. My local one went last year after over a century of trading. Allegedly they are winding down the clothes side of things to focus on the out of town food halls.

Bagofoldbones · 20/02/2020 15:52

‘For crying out loud’ 😂😂 god I love to know who that is!

I think this woman looks like soooo many other women I know. Honestly why did she feel she needed to go in the menz?

Attention seeker.

Are we going to get non binary changing rooms as how the fuck are we going to accommodate people who don’t know which arc they are? If they don’t know how are we?

Babybel90 · 20/02/2020 15:53

But if she’s non-binary why did she need to use the men’s changing rooms? Surely she is aware of the reality that she is and looks like a woman to the general population, whether she agrees with that reality or not? So she would have a much more pleasant shopping experience if she just used the changing rooms that accord with her actual body. But of course then she wouldn’t get half as much attention would she?

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 15:53

They don’t care!

Last time I was in TK Max I had to try on a dress (in the woman’s changing rooms) and although it was cubicles (gaps top and bottom) there was a man standing halfway down with a woman who kept popping out for his opinion on her clothes. It wasn’t great because the only way you can see yourself decently is to step out into the corridor to check the long mirrors.

3 staff (2 women one trans woman) just stood at the entrance chatting.
