*Can we be reassured that the Gender Recognition Act will be reformed and fixed to ensure the safety, protection and validation of trans and non-binary people in the UK?

Can you promise us that this will be put into action, rather than simply saying you will, when you become prime minister?*

Yes, I can definitely promise that, because this is long overdue. We will reform the Gender Recognition Act to include self-identification for trans people – and we will make sure the voices of non-binary people are finally heard in our review of the GRA consultation.
Trans people will no longer have to endure invasive, dehumanising and lengthy processes in order to have their gender recognised. And we’ll also amend the Equality Act 2010.

We need to remove the outdated language in there, and we’re going to ensure there are proper protections for trans people against discrimination.

You can always rely on Jeremy. I suppose he has at least had the sense not to say it on GMB the day before the election.

TimeLady · 11/12/2019 18:35

O. M. G.

Cooroo · 11/12/2019 18:37

Oh for fuck's sake who are we supposed to vote for now??

ThePurported · 11/12/2019 18:37

Ok, so self ID and an amended EA to ensure that women have no protections left?
Thanks Jeremy. It's a FUCK OFF from me.

TiredofthisBS · 11/12/2019 18:37

And this is why I can't vote labour, Lib Dem, green or Tory. They want our votes but do nothing except crap on women from a great height.

Cwenthryth · 11/12/2019 18:40

Tbh people can have certificates to recognise their gender all they like - as long as the law recognises the distinction between gender and sex and sex remains a separate protected characteristic

stillathing · 11/12/2019 18:41

For fucks sake. Am in a marginal. What do I do.

GCAcademic · 11/12/2019 18:41

So definitely not looking at the consultation responses, as Laura Pidcock had said they would? What a surprise.

stillathing · 11/12/2019 18:41

It's the amending equality act bit that's too much.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 11/12/2019 18:43

It's never a 'difficult balance' or 'everyone rights need to be considered' where trans rights are concerned. They seem to get clear, unambiguous answers.

It's only becomes complex for sex based rights.

GCAcademic · 11/12/2019 18:44

It's the amending equality act bit that's too much.

Yes, and the keeping that under wraps until the 11th hour. Really fucking duplicitous.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 11/12/2019 18:45

we’ll also amend the Equality Act 2010.

To completely erase any remaining protection women may have. Jolly good.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 11/12/2019 18:49

.

OhHolyJesus · 11/12/2019 18:49

They nailed their colours to the flag ages ago.

It's good to have a reminder before voting tomorrow though.

The only vague chance of maintaining single sex spaces is with the Tories with Liz Truss and they started this mess in the first place (the consultation, not the original bill obvs that was Blair).

clitherow · 11/12/2019 18:50

Tbh people can have certificates to recognise their gender all they like - as long as the law recognises the distinction between gender and sex and sex remains a separate protected characteristic

I wish this were the case. The debate that took place on the Gender Recognition Bill before the GRA was passed in 2004 made it quite clear that the aim was that people in their acquired gender should be treated as if they were that sex in all respects. So, the aim is to give people who identify as the opposites sex all the rights of that sex - beginning with the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act. And in Corbyn's vision (as probably in all parties) this doen not even require a certificate.

stillathing · 11/12/2019 18:51

Clutching at straws.... Amend the equality act to make gender identity protected characteristic?

Don't want to click on a penis news link really.

Floisme · 11/12/2019 18:53

'Outdated language' being 'sex' I assume.

Christ alive, I had just about decided I would vote for them to keep out the local Lib Dem.

SingingLily · 11/12/2019 18:55

I've already had this discussion on another thread.

I live in a Conservative/LibDem swing seat.

My LibDem candidate is Helen Belcher.

Anyone who thinks I'm going to help vote Helen Belcher into a seat in the HoC and a position to have a say over Self ID can think again.

Anyone who thinks I'm going to help Helen Belcher indirectly by spoiling my ballot can think again.

Labour is also committed to Self ID - read the manifesto. I did.

I'm voting Conservative.

If anyone doesn't like that, tough. The Conservative manifesto is the only one that doesn't promise Self ID.

That's my priority and I'm not changing my mind.

TiredofthisBS · 11/12/2019 18:56

Why do they treat Penis News seriously? It's the equivalent of handing the Viz the Pulitzer Prize.

PencilsInSpace · 11/12/2019 18:57

WHAT THE FUCK?!!

Every single Labour politician I have read or heard speaking about GRA and EA during this election campaign has said something completely different.

At least the Lib Dems are consistent in their dangerous batshittery.

Fuck the lot of them.

PencilsInSpace · 11/12/2019 18:59

Has he not read his own manifesto, FFS!

GrinitchSpinach · 11/12/2019 19:00

safety, protection and validation of trans and non-binary people

Validation?! Am not British but is there any government on earth that proposes to validate the feelings of its citizens?

littlbrowndog · 11/12/2019 19:01

Fuckity off corbyn

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 11/12/2019 19:01

"we don't mind traumatising rape survivors by forcing them to have mammograms from male bodied people"

I have never spoiled a vote before.

OhHolyJesus · 11/12/2019 19:03

Good for you SingingLily personally I think that's refreshing. I can't agree with you but you are clear in your priorities and we all have a vote, thanks to the women who made it so. Given the choice of your LD candidate I may have done the same.

It's none of our faults that this is where we are now. It's a bloody disaster but we did not bring this upon ourselves.
